The Thoroughbred Daily News reports that Mentality, the five-year-old son of former shuttle stallion Flying Spur, won Saturday’s Gr1 George Main Stakes at Randwick after a titanic struggle with Theseo (Danewin) . A neck separated the pair at the line after they had both raced past the early leader Ashikaga at the top of the straight. Gallant Tess (Galileo) battled on for third a length and a half back.
This was a third career Gr1 win for Mentality, who won the Champagne Stakes as a two-year old and then took the Randwick Guineas the following season. He missed out last season, although he was caught in Sydney during the Equine Influenza outbreak at this time last year. Curiously all three wins at the top level have come over the Randwick mile. The John Hawkes trained gelding will have another opportunity to add to that record in the Gr1 Epsom Handicap next Saturday.
Flying Spur was twice Champion sire in Australia and currently stands at Arrowfield Stud for a fee of A$137 500. (About R1 million!) He produces 67% winners to runners and has sired 10 Gr1 winners including multiple Gr1 winners Mentality, Forensics and Magnus.
The good news is that you do not have to travel to Australia to get in on the Flying Spur action as we have an outstanding individual on the Ready To Run sale. He is a big, scopey colt with a good action and has impressed the Ready To Run team with his work. Come and see him in action at the Ready To Run gallops here at Summerhill on 17 October – it will be worth the trip!
