Someone out there said the world was heading for a recession, but you’d be forgiven for believing that the boom times had returned if you’d been a fly on the wall at the Summerhill gallops on Friday.
A record crowd turned up, and they included people from all over the world, as well as local professionals from Cape Town and Johannesburg. They witnessed a day of consummate professionalism, from the organisation and the technological back-up, to the supreme horsemanship of those that prepared the horses, and those that sat on them.
There was pretty much a consensus among the people who gathered there, that Summerhill’s claims of the past few months that this was the best draft of horses to leave this farm, was comfortably justified. Perhaps this was probably was best illustrated when the Panel came to deliberate, that there wasn’t a single duplication in their choices among the fillies.
Surely the best indication of just how deep the draft is.
