The world’s foremost statistician and analyst on stallions and sales is Bill Oppenheim : we all know that. Bill dropped us a note yesterday in another regard, and in passing, mentioned the performances of Kahal and Muhtafal as high-rankers in the assembly of active South African stallions. The numbers are out, and they tell us what we’ve been telling the public for several years now. Despite their modest beginnings at fees under R10,000, Kahal and Muhtafal rank in the top seven by A runners in terms of Oppenheim’s Apex ratings, and while for much of their careers they will have served mares substantially inferior to those of the horses ahead of them, they’ve made their marks in the most telling ways. Here is Bill’s top ten list; it speaks for itself :
