EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN CUP
When Mike de Kock rang Mick Goss after the draw for the R1,5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup yesterday, he was heard to mutter “with friends like you, who needs enemies!!”.
Mick and Cheryl Goss were part of the gathering at the Vaal Racecourse, where the draw was aired live on Tellytrack. Five or six of the audience were assigned the task of selecting an alphabet letter, under which lay the draws, 1 to 18.
De Kock has five engaged in the race, one the “hotty” Igugu, who picked up the perfect No 6. But, as fate would have it, three of his other fancies just happened to be assigned to the couple Goss, and drew 16 (Umhlaba), 17 (Chekeche) and 18 (Checcetti). And to cap it, poor Alyson Wright’s chap Single Tempo, (like all of De Kock’s, a Summerhill graduate,) was handed yet another “Goss” “poison chalice” with 14.
Next year, the Gosses vow they’ll only be part of the gathering, as the “opposition”, Al’s Mark, Anton Marcus’ highly regarded entrant, pulled the No 2 hole. Other impact runners, Hollywoodboulevard (9) and Cherie’s Boy (4) fared better, though both Dominic Zaki and Charles Laird would’ve been happier with closer lanes for Oh Driscoll (15) and Draconian (13). Alec Laird’s impressive winner, Umfutho, looks a big improver, and he’ll be happy with the 11 slot, since he’s likely to jump from 9 as the two emergency acceptors both drew inside of him.
