WE WILL “SEA” YOU LATER

Thoroughbred Daily News reports:

Mick Kinane has called time on his career following a season to remember partnering Sea the Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}). In a statement to the Press Association, the 50-year-old revealed the decision. “I have decided this is the right time to retire from race-riding. At 50 I still feel fit and sharp enough to do any horse justice but, after the season I have just had in partnership with Sea the Stars, I have the privilege of being able to end my career as a jockey on an incredible high and that’s what I want to do. I leave with a huge sense of gratitude to all the great horses I have ridden, all the great trainers whose genius developed those champions and everybody else in racing, from the stable lads to the owners, who have made me deeply thankful for my involvement in the game. Teamwork is the key to success in racing and I have been blessed with some of the best alliances a jockey could have. The most important support of all throughout my career has, naturally, come from my wife, Catherine, along with my family and friends. Both Catherine and our two precious daughters, Sinead and Aisling, know how much they mean to me.” Kinane retires as the winner of four renewals of the 2000 Guineas, three Derbys, two Oaks, a St Leger, five King Georges and six St James’s Palace Stakes. and a total of 14 Irish Classics and seven Irish Champion Stakes. He also garnered three editions of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, a Melbourne Cup, a Belmont Stakes and three Breeders’ Cup wins.

We were lucky enough to see Mick Kinane in action here in South Africa at Turffontein at the International Jockey’s challenge last month. He is a legendary rider & consummate professional & we wish him all the best in his retirement.

R1,5 MILLION EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN CUP NOMINEE

In what can only be described as a somewhat surreal debut by the Charles Laird-trained Blue Voyager at Turffontein yesterday, the son of Muhtafal out of Blue Yonder, went about his business with an air of subdued class under jockey Anton Marcus, to win his maiden by a comfortable 2,5 lengths.

Owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste must surely now have their sights firmly set on the Cup, come November 7.

THE JOYS OF BEING A RACEHORSE OWNER

Click the play button to listen to Nico Kritsiotis calling home Water Nymph

That you can be as battle-hardened as you like, and still melt when you get a winner, was never more in evidence than at Turffontein on Saturday, when seasoned race-caller, Nico Kritsiotis, registered his first winner after more than thirty years as a player in the game. How many thousand times has Nico called home in his inimitable style, the winner of a race, yet his emotion was palpable, not only as his Michael Azzie-trained filly, Water Nymph emerged as the likely heroine at the 500m pole, but then again as he took television viewers through the race in the “post-match” interview. Nico is no softy in his daily walk, but this was something beyond the ordinary, stopping him in his emotional tracks.

Well done, old pal; we know what it means.

As one of the game’s great veterans remarked a few years ago “It’s the best sensation known to man”. That says something for the sensation of winning, coming as it does from Graham Beck, as worldly a gentleman as you’ll ever know.

South African Jockeys to take on the World

Six of the world’s best jockeys will go head to head with South Africa’s top riders in an international jockeys’ challenge at the Steinhoff International Summer Cup race meeting at Turffontein on Saturday, 29th November.

European Bloodstock News reports that staging the first international jockeys’ contest in South Africa in some 20 years is a major coup for horse-racing and Gauteng racing operator Phumelela and will make this year’s Steinhoff International Summer Cup meeting one of the best events in South African horse-racing history.

The Summer Cup, one of the most famous races on the South African racing calendar, and several other major races will be run on the day and, in addition, six of the best jockeys in the world will compete against half a dozen of this country’s top riders in a thrilling four-race challenge.

Phumelela’s General Manager Marketing and Communications, Robert Garner, said the jockeys’ challenge would capture the imagination: “Our jockeys have been champions across the globe from Michael Roberts in the UK, to Felix Coetzee, Basil Marcus and Douglas Whyte in Hong Kong, and you can bet that the level of riding skills and excitement in the four challenge races on Cup Day will be phenomenal.”

Points will be awarded to jockeys on a sliding scale from first to last in each of the four challenge races and each horse in each race will be seeded in order to equalise the calibre of mount for the South African and international teams.
