NATIONAL YEARLING SALE 2011 IN PERSPECTIVE

National Yearling Sale 2011

“For Major Sales, 2011 The Best Year Ever”

Karel Miedema Sporting PostKarel Miedema

The Cape Premiere Yearling Sale took many of the best yearlings away from the National Yearling Sale. To keep the numbers up, some 200 yearlings who normally wouldn’t have made the grade appeared in the National sale catalogue. No wonder the numbers at Nationals were down on previous years. Yet when put in proper context, the major sales of 2011 make it the best year South Africa has ever had. Ever!

At Nationals last year, 490 yearlings averaged R326k, with a median of 225k. At Nationals this year, 472 yearlings averaged R244k, with a median of 150k. It’s wrong, though, to make a straight comparison. As much as a third of the 2011 catalogue was made up of yearlings who didn’t belong at Nationals. Buyers took note and bid accordingly.

So how do we sensibly assess 2011, compared to previous years?

One way is to take the 214 yearlings sold at the Cape Premier Sale, and add the highest prices from the National Sale to get to a comparable number of yearlings sold to that of Nationals in 2010. Another way is to lump the Cape Premier Sale and National Sale together, and then from the top-price down pick a number of yearlings comparable to those sold at Nationals in 2010. Either way 2011 beats 2010 hands down. Both scenarios give an average price over R380k, compared to R326k last year. The median prices for the two scenarios are 260k and 275k - well above the 225k recorded last year.

When split by sex it’s much the same. The colts of 2011 average over R400k (vs 373 in 2010), with a median of 275k and 300k (vs 250k in 2010). The fillies average is 340k (vs 267k in 2010), with a median of 250k for both scenarios (vs 200k in 2010).

Percentage-wise those are increases of 15% and more in all cases. Looking back in time, the previous ‘best’ year for Nationals was 2008, with an average of R398k and a median of 260k - both below our double-handed 2011 scenarios.

No doubt the unqualified success of the Cape Premier Yearling Sale deserves the kudus. But overall speaking there’s every reason to be pleased with what has been achieved in 2011 at our two major sales.

The tables below shows the last 2 years of sales and a list of yearling millionaires, how they’re bred, who bought and who sold.

WAY WEST : IS THIS THE SIGN OF SOMETHING "BIG"

way west stallion
Highveld Juvenile Champion and Dual Graded Stakes Winner, Waywest Goddess,
was a neck away from a National title in the Allan Robertson Fillies Championship Gr 1.

“Leading the second crop Sires…”

The “smart money” will tell you they expected it of WAY WEST. An explosive juvenile, a prince’s pedigree and a flawless physique.

So to be fair, a Highveld Juvenile Champion in his first crop was no more than WAY WEST stepping up to the plate. But given the opposition, you’d have to say that leading the second crop Sires, is a matter of exceeding expectations.

Or is this the sign of something “big” in the making?

BRAVE TIN SOLDIER TO STAND STUD AT SUMMERHILL

brave tin soldier

Brave Tin Soldier
(Photo : Summerhill Stud)

“IT DIDN’T TAKE YOUTUBE LONG EITHER…”

You didn’t really believe Summerhill would be long in announcing a replacement for Stronghold did you? Though it wasn’t without blood and sweat, but very few tears.

The void left by Freshman standout, Cataloochee and a horse of Stronghold’s class and speed, meant the search would have to embrace a horse with similar credentials; big, brave, brilliant. And if you could find one to answer those three questions, and come packed with pedigree too, you had a match made in heaven.

What better then, than a precocious Stakes winning juvenile by Storm Cat from a Mr Prospector own sister to one of the most famous winners of America’s greatest race? Brave Tin Soldier is precisely that : brilliant enough to cruise up in the six furlong Blenheim Stakes (Listed) as a two year old at the Curragh; brave enough to return from a career-threatening stress fracture at three to Graded Stakes glory and two other victories at five; and big (and beautiful) enough to command a $3million price tag as a foal from one of the world’s most astute judges.

It took YouTube precisely an hour to post his pulsating victory in the Cliff Hanger Stakes (Gr3) where he positively sprouted wings in the final furlong, and while it’s taken them a little longer, South African breeders’ new worship of Var and Tiger Ridge tells us they’ve cottoned on well and truly to the Storm Cat phenomenon, too.

Of course, it helped that Mike de Kock was associated with Brave Tin Soldier’s rehab in Dubai. It took him just two seconds to stamp his signature on the horse’s passport to Summerhill.

And if this all sounds too much to believe, visit him at www.summerhill.co.za and you’ll get him in Technicolor, together with one of the best “pages” on the planet.

Royal Ascot history for TIGER RIDGE and TRIPPI

royal ascotRoyal Ascot

“RED LETTER DAY FOR SOUTH AFRICAN STALLIONS
AT THE WORLD’S BIGGEST MEETING”

The purchase for stud duty in South Africa of A.P. Indy’s Storm Cat half brother, TIGER RIDGE, and Florida’s number one stallion, TRIPPI, both set new records in terms of the cost of sire-power for this country. Many a pundit was left gob-smacked at the outlay, but the protagonists behind their acquisition were of the faith that if we want this country to go to the next level as a nursery for world class horses, we have to do what it takes.

It’s times like the ones we live in though, that make us question our judgement, that tell us to reinvest our beliefs, Doubt becomes the refuge of the pessimist. Yet it’s times like this that can set us apart, and determine our futures.

Mary Slack and Gaynor Rupert, the principals behind these horses, could hardly have chosen a better place to vindicate their views than the number one race meeting in the world. Royal Ascot is not only populated by the people that matter in racing, but the message goes out to tens of millions on television. On the opening day, TIGER RIDGE displayed his wares with the impressive victory of his American-trained son STRIKE THE TIGER, in the Windsor Castle Stakes (L).

Yesterday, TRIPPI’s daughter, JEALOUS AGAIN, demolished a field of England’s best two-year-olds in the Queen Mary Stakes (Gr2), providing her adventurous American trainer, Wesley Ward, with his second Royal Ascot winner from three starters. No doubt the enterprise of this man will ensure this is by no means the last sortie among US trainers to this great showpiece.

Talking of enterprise, our top hats off to Wilgerbosdrift Stud (TIGER RIDGE) and Drakenstein Stud (TRIPPI). The entire team at Summerhill is here, saluting.
