SOUTH AFRICAN SALES NEWS
By Lisa Barrett

Extract from ANZ Bloodstock News

South Africa is continuing to buck the trend when it comes to racehorse sales, and the results of the recently concluded Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sales speak for themselves. The overall aggregate was up from R30,835million in 2011 to R38,840million in 2012, the average price per horse also rose significantly from R177,213 in 2011 to R229,822 in 2012. A vendor buy back system was implemented earlier this year which accounted for 11 lots with just ten lots left unsold by sale end.

Over the years, the Ready To Run concept has taken off and is now one of the most visible and popular sales in South Africa. This is mostly thanks to the innovation of Mick Goss, CEO of Summerhill Stud, who realised that it is better to see a horse doing what it does naturally; run. This would give buyers the added edge, being able to see the horses in action, and so the concept for the well-known Summerhill gallops was born.

One of the most exciting aspects of the Ready To Run Sale has been its associated race, the R2.5Million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup (1400m), which is now the richest race for two-year-olds in the world, and ranks on a par with the J&B Met (Gr1, 2000m) as the second richest in Africa. The race has produced multiple millionaires over the years, and is an added incentive for buyers wanting to join the ranks of fame and glory.

Six lots went for R1million and above with the sales topper Die Kat (Lot 157), a colt by leading US sire Tale Of The Cat (Storm Cat), went for R2million to Adriaan van Vuuren, who also bought the sale’s top filly, Mystical Star (Lot 47), a daughter of the late Jet Master (Rakeen) for R1.5million.

The TBA’s Jan Naude was delighted with the results of the sale saying, “This was a phenomenal sale. The aggregate was up 26%, and the average 30%. Well done to all involved for this sale.”

Summerhill’s Mick Goss, professed himself thrilled with the results, “This is a wonderful tribute to the resilience of South Africans, determined to overcome the gloomy current economy. Racing is an escape from all the bad news around the world”.

In the end, it boils down to one thing, this Ready To Run sale is the best place to pick up a future winner at a bargain price; remember Hear The Drums (Gold Press) who was sold at the 2004 Ready To Run Sale for a mere R42,000? He went onto become South Africa’s winning-most horse in history (somewhere in the region of 34 wins), retiring with earnings in excess of R2million. The opportunities are endless, and the possibilities mouth watering. (R1 = $0.11)

Gross revenue and average prices reached record highs at last weekend’s 2 day Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale at the TBA Sales Complex. Of the 202 catalogued 2-year-olds some 169 were sold, grossing R38million. That translates to an average price of R229k, up 20% on the corresponding sale last year. Remarkably, the average was just fractionally less than what was achieved at the 2012 National Yearling Sale (R233k).

Top price was R2million for an Australian-bred colt by Tale Of The Cat. The youngster is the first foal of his US-bred unraced dam, from the female line of Dancing Brave, and had been bought earlier this year in Australia for A$42k.

Local heroes Jet Master, Var and Trippi filled the next three places, price-wise. A half brother by Var to Gr.3 placed Stakes winner Jet Jamboree made R1.6million, a handsome return on his R600k purchase price at the Cape Yearling Sale in January of this year. Even more profitable was the pinhook on the full sister by Jet Master to multiple Gr.1 placed Stakes winner Lizarre and Gr.3 placed Lake Arthur. She made third top-price of R1.5million, having been bought at the 2012 Cape Sale for R350k.

Trippi’s 2-year-old son out of Sportsworld mare, Spoil Sport, was listed as a R300k vendor buy-back at the 2012 National Sale. The youngster, who is full brother to multiple 2-year-old winner Yellow Card, was knocked down this time at R1.1million.

Gr.1 winner Ivory Trail had been catalogued and withdrawn at both the Cape Sale and the National Sale in 2012. The wait proved worthwhile, as the Cheveley-bred fetched a cool R1million here.

The last of the millionaires was a Fastnet Rock 2-year-old out of a Sadler’s Wells daughter of Champion European sprinter Habibti. The youngster is half brother to German and Italian Gr.1 winner Morshdi, and had made the shortlist of most of the judges at the Ready To Run gallops three weeks prior to this sale.

The overall median price at the sale went up to R150k, from R90k and R100k in the two previous years. Colt’s median increased to R180k from R110k in the both previous years. Fillies didn’t lag, with their median going to R130k, from R90k both previous years. These figures were much the same as those at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale of 2012, where the overall median also was R150k, with colts slightly less at R170k, and fillies on par with R150k.

The traditional Ready To Run Sale, with its massive annual restricted-race incentive, has truly come of age. The presence of 2-year-olds by top class international sires (who do deliver!) and the pin-hooking opportunities (on both the local and international stock) will no doubt continue to make the original Ready To Run one of the major events of the year.

2012 EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE POSTS RECORD HIGHS

Ready To Run Sale Lot 157 Tale Of The Cat - America's IdolTop Lot - R2million
Lot 157: Die Kat (AUS) (Tale Of The Cat x America’s Idol) (C)

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE
TBA Sales Complex, Germiston
2nd and 4th November 2012

The 2012 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale proved a tremendous success with the aggregate jumping from R30,835million in 2011 to a record R38,840million this year.

The average price also rose considerably from R177,213 to R229,822, which was extremely pleasing considering the current fragile economic situation. Vendor buy backs, a system implemented earlier this year, accounted for 11 lots, with just 10 lots failing to find buyers.

The top price paid for a horse rose from R1.5million in 2011 to R2million a year later and no fewer than six lots went for R1million plus.

The sales topper came in the form of lot 157, a colt by leading US sire Tale Of The Cat. Consigned by Summerhill Stud, the colt named Die Kat, was knocked down to Adriaan van Vuuren. The bay colt, from the family of champion Dancing Brave, attracted plenty of attention at the Ready To Run gallops last month, and confirmed his popularity in the sales ring. His R2million price tag was the highest achieved at a Ready To Run Sale since 2009.

Adriaan van Vuuren also purchased the sale’s top priced filly, lot 47, a daughter of the late, great sire, Jet Master. An own sister to the top-class performers Lizarre and Lake Arthur, the filly was knocked down for R1.5million. Given the moniker of Mystical Star, the bay miss was consigned by Summerhill - as Property of a Gentleman.

Summerhill Stud’s Mick Goss was thrilled by the sale’s remarkable success, commenting “The figures of this sale (aggregate up 26%) speak for themselves. This is a wonderful tribute to the courage of South Africans, in the current gloomy times. Racing at least provides an escape from all the negative news, and brings hope to those who love the game.”

The TBA’s Jan Naude was equally pleased by the results of the sale, saying, “This was a phenomenal sale. The aggregate was up 26%, and the average 30%! Well done to all involved for this sale.”

Business Day
If the eight panel members assessing the breezing of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run candidates at Summerhill last Friday have got it right, the honour of being top lot at next week’s sale will be as close as last weekend’s Aussie-Kiwi rugby encounter.

It could come down to a straight fight between the progeny of two Aussie-bred two-year-olds (by Fastnet Rock and Tale Of The Cat) and two dominant local sires (ill-fated Jet Master and Var).

The sale is scheduled for the TBA Complex at Germiston on 2 and 4 November and - with only 202 horses set to go under the hammer - there is sure to be keen competition for many of the entries which the panel have earmarked as the choice lots.

Of the Aussie contingent, it was a son of Fastnet Rock (lot 88) and a son of Tale Of The Cat (lot 157) which each got the thumbs up from four panel members. But countering that for the home contingent was four votes for a son of Jet Master (lot 31) and three each for a daughter of Jet Master (lot 47) and a son of Var (lot 94).

But the striking fact of the panel’s selections is that there wasn’t a single vote for five big name overseas stallions - Henrythenavigator, Flying Spur, Stratum, Rock Of Gibraltar and Dylan Thomas. That is as astonishing as the length of time it took for Frankie Dettori and Godolphin to get divorced! The writing was on the wall for that back in March.

So let’s have a look - in no particular order - at the various picks of the eight-member panel:

MIKE DE KOCK

Lots 47, 120, 181, 88, 94 and 122.
He liked a Jet Master filly, daughter of Japan sire Admire Main, a daughter of Kahal, the Fastnet Rock colt, the Var colt and a son of A.P. Arrow.

JEHAN MALHERBE:

Lots 47, 120, 133, 17, 31 and 88.
First thoughts (with the first two picks being the same) was that Mike and Jehan were comparing notes like schoolboys - impossible of course! So Jehan’s sextet reads the Jet Master filly, daughter of Admire Main, a daughter of Kahal, a son of Captain Al, the son of Jet Master and the Fastnet Rock colt.

ALEC LAIRD:

Lots 110, 192, 199, 20, 115, 157.
Now Alec’s name wasn’t on the panel released to the press, but he’s a horse-picker of note so his choices are worth close scrutiny. They are a daughter of Mullins Bay, a daughter of A.P. Arrow, a daughter of Admire Main, a son of Stronghold, a son of Admire Main and the Tale Of The Cat colt.

DEAN KANNEMEYER:

Lots 47, 49, 131, 31, 56 and 88.
Dean kicks off with the Jet Master filly followed by a daughter of Stronghold, a daughter of Dynasty, the Jet Master colt, a son of Western Winter and the popular Fastnet Rock colt.

YUSUKE TSUKAHARA:

Lots 12, 20, 199, 120, 155 and 157.
Now it was as good a bet as night following day that this respected Japanese expert would fancy the progeny of Sunday Silence’s son, Admire Main. Spot on. He went for four of his progeny as well as a daughter of A.P. Arrow and the Tale Of The Cat colt. Yusuke commented: “I felt the Admire Main’s were typical of the Sunday Silence tribe in general.”

MUIS ROBERTS:

Lots 89, 198, 199, 94, 157 and 197.
Now Muis is convinced the big action will be on the Sunday of the sale - he hasn’t a single pick for the first session! He liked two daughters of A.P. Arrow, a daughter of Admire Main, the Var colt, a colt by Admire Main and the Tale Of The Cat colt.

GRAEME HAWKINS:

Lots 24, 82, 159, 31, 94 and 157.
Graeme will be on the rostrum with Andrew Miller and the ones that caught his eye were a daughter of Mullins Bay, a daughter of Kahal, a daughter of A.P. Arrow, the Jet Master colt, the Var colt and the popular Tale Of The Cat colt.

SEAN TARRY:

Lots 6, 66, 118, 22, 31, 88.
In contrast to Muis, four of Sean’s six picks are on the Friday session (17h00 start). Last season’s runner-up in the trainers log liked a daughter of Stronghold, a daughter of A.P. Arrow, a daughter of Mullins Bay, a son of Kahal, the Jet Master colt and the Fastnet Rock colt.

I was most interested to learn on the Summerhill website that Thabani Nzimande, who has been at the stud’s pre-training division for five years, is particularly sweet on Lot 167 - a daughter of Stronghold who is a half-sister to recent Turffontein winner, Waka Waka. Not one vote for Thabani’s top choice from the illustrious panel!

Also on the website, I came across an article written a few years ago by Charl Pretorius - he’s a journo of note in my book and many of us miss him because he shoots straight from the hip.

He had obviously asked Mick Goss if the two-year-olds had been rushed along for the Ready To Run Sale and this was Mick’s response: “It’s a complete misnomer that we’re hard on our horses to get them ready to gallop. I am a horseman and my staff consists of horse lovers. We care for our stock, this is our business.”

Good reply from the Summerhill boss, but sadly not always the case where some sale vendors are concerned.

Also, this from Mike de Kock, on what he looks for in the breezing: “I like to see an economical action and how the limbs move. But I also believe I was born lucky - and I’d rather have an ounce of luck than a ton of ability.”

I’m in Mike’s corner on this. I also like limbs that move well. Preferably those with two legs, not four!
