“The first rain of the Official New Spring”

The onset of Spring heralds the transformation of our neighbourhood. Suddenly there are new buds, there’s a profusion of greenery and there is a feeling of new life. Last night was the first rain of the official new Spring, and if you’ve never been in a thunderstorm, this was a baptism of fire. A cacophony of flashes and strikes, and the ominous roll and clash of big thunder. Where I live, I’m on a par with the clouds, and we have a front row seat in the eye of an advancing storm. There’s nothing quite like a Midlands thundershower. It might be spectacular, but it’s also unnerving, and a visit to the kitchen, the nerve centre of electric points, where just about every plug in the place is hitched to an appliance, can be quite petrifying. It’s like entering a mixture of a bingo hall and an Imax theatre, with flashing lights and crashing sound effects.

But it’s not only raining cats and dogs, it’s also raining champions at Summerhill. The past ten days have witnessed the arrivals of brothers and sisters to Pierre Jourdan, Hear the Drums, Icy Air, and Amphitheatre, as well as to international celebrity, Art of War, and there are many more to come. Imagine waking up to these happenings, and getting paid for it as well!

“SPRING HAS SPRUNG”

We haven’t experienced as dry a winter since 1992 in these parts, yet it’s a testament to the generosity of our environment that, as dry as it is, the flora and the arbors of our area are as determined as ever to show off their spring finery. Birds are changing colour, antelope are migrating back to their traditional grazing grounds, and at last, the winds have arrived to spread their pollen and the seeds. Rain must surely be close at hand.

Tiz the season now, though the sardines came late, and we might also have to be patient.

Out and About October 2006

Spring is well and truly upon us - frost bitten paddocks replaced by the lush green of rye, flower beds a sea of colour, cherry blossoms resplendent across the Hartford estate, and daylight well past the 12 hour mark. As if to mock my optimistic Saturday morning decision to pack away all my pullovers and replace the feather quilts with sheets however, the mist drifted across the property this morning, temperatures plunged and by early afternoon the surrounding mountains were resplendent in virgin snow and we were all shivering in our jackets as we dashed inside from the rain.

Hint - don’t call our broodmare manager and ask her about her day. Annet has an unfailing sense of good humour but she is, after all, trying to cycle maiden mares!
