HIGHVELD RACING AWARDS
19 May 2012

We all know that the KZN Champions’ season is the most glamourous three months of the racing year, but we know too, that the Highveld Spring and Autumn seasons are the toughest of the lot. Year after year, the award for the nations’ champion trainer inevitably falls to a Highveld trainer, and it was no different in 2012. That means it’s consistently the most competitive environment in South African racing, and that makes the title of Highveld Champion Breeder all the more noteworthy.

When Catherine Hartley made her way to the podium on Friday evening, she was fetching Summerhill’s third consecutive Champion Breeders award, not only a landmark occasion for us, but also a “first” as far as breeders’ prizes go. No farm in the history of the Highveld Awards had hitherto earned the title three times in a row. There were no major Group One victories in Gauteng from the likes of Igugu or Pierre Jourdan this year, but there was a string of Group successes from Smanjemanje, Extra Zero, Checcetti and Mannequin as well as Igugu and Pierre Jourdan, to advertise the class of our graduates. We never take these things for granted, and we have our horses and our people to thank for it.

By contrast, the trainers’ award has fallen to Mike de Kock on any number of occasions, and Saturday was the same old story.

J&B MET : TALES OF GLORY

Smanjemanje wins from The Apache and Pierre Jourdan

J&B MET (Grade 1)
Kenilworth, Turf, 2000m
28 January 2012

At the weights, Saturday’s “big one” looks like the conditions of the race were scripted for only one horse : the Summerhill graduate and Horse of the Year, Igugu. Her 13/10 chalk on bookmakers’ boards is quite generous then, given her record, but reflects more on a less-than-ideal preparation than her ability. The “J&B Met” is like an Olympics final, and, unless you’re unusually gifted, you’d not want the interruptions the daughter of Galileo has had to endure in the past months.

Take her out of the equation, and it’s anybody’s race. On merit ratings alone, the three-year-old Gimmethegreenlight (impressive victor in the time-honoured L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate (Gr1) three weeks back against his elders) is especially well treated with 54kgs (55kgs at weight-for-age in the Plate,) and the services of Piere Strydom (J&B Met winner aboard Summerhill-bred Angus in 2006), and no penalty for his Plate win. He probably has a kilo or 2 in hand against the favourite in handicapping terms, if his 117 rating (same as Igugu’s) is accurate. His rating might be, though we suspect Igugu is better than rated. If the colt has a chink in his armour, it could be his stamina.

In Cape Town, they speak well of Kahal’s son, Tales of Bravery, though bias aside, we’ve always seen him as a thoroughly genuine Group Two horse, and he’s also got a bit to find against the three-year-old. By the way, Kahal’s two runners (Smanjemanje besides) make him one of four stallions (Silvano, Fort Wood and Dynasty) with a brace in the field.

The betting tells us to respect Bravura and The Apache as well. The former last won at this level exactly two years ago (Investec Derby) and while the extra two furlongs might help, he looks held by the Justin Snaith-trained Gimmethegreenlight on Queen’s Plate form, all things being equal. He wouldn’t have been far off his best that day (Joey Ramsden may say otherwise,) and you might argue much the same for Winston Chow’s The Apache, on his run behind Smanjemanje in the London News (same day as the Queen’s Plate).

If the favourite hasn’t been following the press, and ends up fluffing her lines, Mike de Kock feels Ilsanpietro has as good a chance as any, and he’s next among the public fancies.

But strictly on his “Smanjemanje” form, he’ll be troubled attempting to reverse places with that man. At the weights, he can’t.

Which begs the question, what about our fellow Smanjemanje? They’re betting 13/10 Igugu, 7/1 Gimmethegreenlight, 8/1 Bravura and Tales of Bravery, 10/1 The Apache and 14/1 Ilsanpietro, Beach Beauty and Run For It, with “Smanje” among the “33/1 and upwards”. Capetonians can be notoriously parochial about their sports stars, and they’re forgetting “Smanje” had both The Apache and Pierre Jourdan in arrear in the London News, at very little weight disparity. What price Pierre Jourdan in this field? It seems they’ve forgotten where Smanjemanje comes from.

For our money, he’s worth a punt, even if it’s only for minor money. He only has to run to his efforts in the Victory Moon and the London News to make the bearers of those illustrations names proud, and to make you a richer man than you already are!

IGUGU IN QUARANTINE

David Thiselton - Gold CircleDavid Thiselton
Gold Circle
Due to an outbreak of African Horse Sickness (AHS) within a 30km radius of her home base, Randjesfontein, Summerhill champion filly and  J&B Met favourite Igugu, as well as a number of other Highveld-based horses including fellow Summerhill contender Smanjemanje, will be stabled at the Kenilworth Quarantine Station in the days before to the big race.

Cape Town is in the AHS control zone and the State Vet has decided that all horses from the state-of-the-art training centre travelling down to compete on J&B Met day must be placed in quarantine.

Igugu travelled to Cape Town on Tuesday night and the decision has trainer Mike de Kock seething.

The culicoides midge that carries African Horse Sickness is a nocturnal insect and any horse staying in the vector protected conditions will have to be locked up two hours before dusk until two hours after dawn.

De Kock is worried because it is impossible to check up on the horses except through a viewing window. He also said that when Silver Flyer was taken out of the quarantine station on a visit to the Cape earlier in the season the horse sweated up and misbehaved.

De Kock pointed out that Investec Cape Derby contender Potala Palace, who is based at Randjesfontein, had travelled with two raiders from the central Joburg training centre at Turffontein, which is currently not an infected area. Potala Palace joined Igugu at the Kenilworth Quarantine Station, while the Turffontein horses will be based in the holding boxes at Kenilworth.

South Africa’s champion trainer said : “I am aware that AHS is not a contagious disease, but it seems ridiculous that they can travel in the same truck. They should either all have to stay in quarantine or all be allowed in the holding boxes.”

He confirmed that Racing South Africa had done everything within their power to facilitate the participation of Igugu and his other raiders at the meeting.

Racing South Africa boss Peter Gibson said that nobody wanted to see any horses residing in conditions that disadvantaged them, adding that the outbreak had occurred at an unfortunate time.

The State Vet’s ruling was made within a set of principles with the sole purpose of preventing any possibility of AHS being transported into the AHS control area.

There are three rules for any horses departing to the AHS control zone from an area where there is no AHS infection within a 30km radius :

1. A private veterinary surgeon must check the horse to see that it is fit to travel.

2. The vet must then apply to the local State Vet for a movement permit. The State Vet will ascertain whether there is an acceptable lack of risk of importing AHS.

3. The Western Cape State Vet must then be notified of the travel arrangement.

Horses travelling from an area that had been infected by AHS within 30 days of intended departure and within a 30km radius were formerly not allowed to travel into the AHS Control Area, but a special “Red Cross Permit” has now allowed horses from such areas to compete in high-profile races in Cape Town.

In terms of the Red Cross Permit :

1. Before departure the horses must be vector protected as best as possible.

2. A real time PCR test must be taken as close to departure as possible to check for the presence of the AHS virus.

3. The horses must be transported in a sealed vehicle directly to the Kenilworth Quarantine Station where they will be stabled under vector-protected conditions.

If these rules are followed, in the unlikely event of a horse being infected between the time of the PCR test and its departure, there will be no chance of AHS being transmitted to the midge population in the AHS control area.

Horses from areas of different AHS status can travel together because AHS is not contagious and it was assumed that the horses were loaded during a time of day when the midge is not active.

Mike de Kock’s comment was : “The PCR test is a wonderful bit of science (it returns a yes or no answer for AHS within an hour or two of a sample being taken). We are hanging our hat on this test as far as our re-admittance to the EU goes. Perhaps we should have more faith in it ourselves. Why can’t another PCR test be done in Cape Town? If it is clear, there should be no reason for the horse to stay in quarantine. Are we not over complicating things?”

As for Igugu’s wellbeing, De Kock said she had scoped 100% clear, had a good blood picture and that her final gallop had been good. Igugu, of course, had to be scratched from the Paddock Stakes earlier this month after contracting an upper-respiratory tract infection.

ANOTHER TOUGH DAY IN AFRICA

The Vineyard Hotel

“The Vineyard, our Cape Town
home away from home”

Mick Goss - Summerhill Stud CEOMick Goss
Summerhill Stud CEO
If you’re out of town, you want to make sure that wherever you’re visiting, you’re entirely “at home”. By “out of town”, we mean away from Mooi River, where the views are tranquil, life is slow and the atmosphere is peaceful. When we’re in Cape Town, home away from home, for us, is The Vineyard, one-time home to the Mother City’s most famous socialite, Lady Ann Barnard. These days, The Vineyard belongs to the Pitousi family, legendary hoteliers, whose Buffetesque values are everywhere in evidence. Any morning in the foyer, you’ll find “Mama” Pitousi (said to be in her nineties) on patrol. Not much passes her unnoticed, and her hand and that of her daughter in the many murals, paintings and creations, is pervasive. The trademark frugality that stamps the life of Warren Buffett is part of the way of doing things in this family, too, not in their business, but at home. Material belongings are a means to an end, not a form of worship, and the bulk of what this wonderful business stands for, is a reflection of the fact that what it generates is largely reinvested in its facilities, and importantly, in the growth of its people.

Cape Town is heavily “hotelled” at the moment, and renowned brands like The Taj, the One&Only, Orient Express and the like, abound. But the one that’s stood the test of all time, the real “one and only”, is The Vineyard. Great quality, great value and great dependability, the values South Africans (and it appears, foreign visitors, too) appreciate most, are fundamental to this shrine. On any one morning at breakfast, you might find a cabinet minister, a captain of business or the King of Denmark, on the patio. Like us, they like the tranquility, the slowness and the peace.

And speaking of Royalty, the “Queen” came to Kenilworth today, though how Igugu can be expected to continue the form that crowned her Horse of the Year, we don’t know. She’s hardly recovered from the set-back that eliminated her from the Paddock Stakes, and now she’s subjected to a quarantine protocol in the middle of the racecourse, which means that not even Mike de Kock, who’s capable of doing almost anything, can get closer to her than a glance through the window. Even the world’s best trainer is going to find it tough to have her at peak for Saturday’s J&B Met from a distance. “I don’t need anyone to tell me her preparation hasn’t been ideal” quoted the big man, when he and Gary Player made their pass at the Summerhill boxes yesterday.

Somehow though, we think she’s that good that she’ll be good enough to get there, even if it means the rest might be a tad closer. Our other man in the race, Smanjemanje is subject to the same quarantine constraints. It seems the gods are not happy with us right now, though, the way Extra Zero (by 5 lengths) and Blonde Ambition (4,50 lengths) came home yesterday, you’d have to think otherwise.
