SADLER'S WELLS enters Irish Derby Hall Of Fame

Sadler’s Wells has been inducted into the Irish Derby Hall of Fame at the Curragh. The outstanding racehorse and 14-time champion sire won the 1984 Irish 2,000 Guineas at the track.

His name joined those of previous recipients of the award – Vincent O’Brien, Lester Piggott, the Aga Khan, Pat Eddery and Sir Michael Stoute. The sire of six Irish Derby winners, Sadler’s Wells, who was retired from stud duties in May, was directly represented by Curtain Call and Hindu Kush in Sunday’s renewal of the Curragh Classic, while another four of the runners, headed by race winner Frozen Fire, were by his sons.

NEW APPROACH wins Epsom Derby for Princess Haya

New Approach gave Irish trainer Jim Bolger and jockey Kevin Manning their first success in the Vodafone Derby with a game victory at Epsom.

The UK’s Telegraph reports that the English and Irish 2000 Guineas runner-up, sent off at 5-1, just held the persistent challenge of Sir Michael Stoute’s Tartan Bearer (6-1), ridden by Ryan Moore, by half a length. Another Irish runner, Casual Conquest, the 7-2 favourite, was four and a half lengths away in third.

Alan Devonshire and Bashkirov were quickly away but it was the rank outsider Maidstone Mixture who made the running as the field settled down.

Once the latter’s moment of glory had gone it was Bashkirov who went on before Kandahar Run hit the front ahead of Doctor Fremantle as the runners approached Tattenham Corner.

But the pack soon closed in when they straightened up and Tartan Bearer made his bid two furlongs out.

Meanwhile, New Approach had moved up from the rear as Kevin Manning switched him from the outside to the far rail.

The race was between New Approach and Tartan Bearer in the final furlong and it was last season’s champion two-year-old who stayed on the stronger to land the ultimate prize for owner Princess Haya of Jordan, wife of Sheikh Mohammed.

KIEREN FALLON ban appeal fails

Kieren Fallon (telegraph)Kieren Fallon will be out of action for 18 months after learning that his last-ditch appeal against his ban has failed. Following a ruling by France Galop in January, the six-time champion jockey was handed the lengthy suspension as a result of testing positive for a prohibited substance at Deauville last August. That was the second such offence for the former Coolmore-retained rider and the panel of three official judges who heard his appeal in Paris last week upheld the initial verdict. No dates have been set for the commencement of the suspension, which Fallon is expected to spend riding out with Sir Michael Stoute’s team in Newmarket.

2009 Derby attracts initial 474

Epsom’s 2009 Derby has seen an entry of 474 yearlings at the first stage, an increase of nine horses on the number received last year. Among them is a full-brother to this year’s hero Authorized (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), from the Peter Chapple-Hyam stable. He forms part of the Coolmore contingent, including 36 owned by Susan Magnier, 19 by Michael Tabor, 16 by Derrick Smith and one from Anne Marie O’Brien. Aidan O’Brien is responsible for a total of 70 yearling entries, including the $1.7 million Keeneland September purchase by Storm Cat out of Mythomania. Godolphin have 32 entered, including $2.9 million Keeneland September purchase by Dynaformer out of Preach, as well as the son of Distorted Humor—Stormy Bear, who fetched $1.9 million at Keeneland. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum is represented by a 46-strong team, while His Highness the Aga Khan has 27 entered. Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte operation has five entries, including a Dansili (GB) full-brother to Passage of Time (GB). The Niarchos family’s six yearlings include the Pascal Bary-trained son of Storm Cat who is the first foal out of Six Perfections (Fr). Sir Michael Stoute’s nominees include a full-brother to Islington (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), while John Oxx’s list of 14 features a colt named Sea the Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) out of Urban Sea, making him a half brother to the 2001 Derby victor Galileo (Ire).
