THE FRANKIE FACTOR - 16:25 TODAY!

Frankie Dettori and Camelot

QATAR PRIX DE L’ARC DE TRIOMPHE (Group 1)
Longchamp, Turf, 2400m
7 October 2012

There was a sense of inevitability when Frankie Dettori was handed the spare ride of the season on Camelot (GB) (Montjeu), and a flying dismount after today’s G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe would be a dream end to an unusually average year for the famed Italian.

The record of the 3-year-old generation in this Longchamp feature speaks for itself, and G1 Epsom Derby winners to have come here and triumphed in recent times include Sinndar (Ire) (Grand Lodge), Sea the Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross) and Workforce (GB) (King’s Best), while Frankie’s first of his three Arcs came on the ‘Blue Riband’ winner Lammtarra (USA) (Nijinsky) 17 years ago. If he is able to guide Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor’s talented and much-vaunted colt to the post first, he will also equal the joint-record of four winning rides held by Jacques Doyasbere, Freddy Head, Yves Saint-Martin and Pat Eddery.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien was unequivocal in his praise for the rider at Dundalk on Friday evening. “We’re delighted to have got a great rider like Frankie - as everybody knows, he has all the experience in the world,” O’Brien said.

ALL AT SEA

IRISH CHAMPION STAKES (Gr1)
Leopardstown, Turf, 2012m
8 September 2012

Johnny Murtagh may have felt cast adrift when his long-standing riding contract with the powerful Aga Khan stable was severed last month, but trainer John Oxx has remained staunch to the rider, and has retained him for the mount on Born To Sea (the smart half brother to Galileo, Sea The Stars etc,) for Saturday’s Irish Champion Stakes (Gr.1). It promises to be another grand advert for the quality of European racing this season, as it brings together a string of Group One winners including Nathaniel, Snow Fairy and Aidan O’Brien’s St Nicholas Abbey, who will be looking to avenge his defeat at the hands of the superstar, Frankel, a fortnight ago at York.

The Irish Champion Stakes has thrown up any number of quite exceptional performers over the years, including: Sadler’s Wells (1984), Giant’s Causeway (2000), Fantastic Light (2001) who defeated Galileo, High Chaparral (2003), Oratorio (2005), Dylan Thomas (2006 and 2007), New Approach (2008), Sea The Stars (2009), Cape Blanco (2010) and So You Think (2011). Some honour roll! We have our own “almost-hero” of the same race right here at Summerhill in our new stallion, Traffic Guard, who went down a half length to the world’s top-rated three-year-old of 2008, New Approach, now Europe’s hottest young stallion with his first crop.

HISTORY OF THE JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL

Sea The Stars - Juddmonte International Stakes

JUDDMONTE INTERNATIONAL STAKES (Gr1)
York Racecourse, United Kingdom
1 mile, 2 furlongs and 88 yards

The Juddmonte International Stakes, the last middle-distance QIPCO British Champions Series race before the QIPCO Champion Stakes provides the glittering climax to the category on QIPCO British Champions Day, and is a race with a short but glorious history.

The event, run at York over 1 miles, 2 furlongs and 88 yards (2,090 metres), first appeared in 1972. But what an appearance! American-bred Roberto, a Derby winner and named after baseball star Roberto Clemente, became the first - and last - horse to beat Brigadier Gerard.

There have been other notable highlights in this Group 1 race for three-year-olds or older - Troy, the 1979 Derby winner, Commanche Run, the 1984 St Leger winner, two-time winner Halling and Giant’s Causeway, rated Europe’s top horse in 2000.

And then, of course, there was Sea The Stars, who took the race in 2009 - the same year he won an incredible six Group 1 races within six months, including the 2000 Guineas, Investec Derby and Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe.

If you’re looking for the best quiz question concerning the Juddmonte International Stakes, then try this one - what is the family name of the jockey who has entered the winner’s enclosure six times? Answer - Dettori, with six wins (although only the last five of those went to Frankie. The first went to his father Gianfranco in 1976. That would have been a tad early for Frankie, who was five years old at the time).

Current leading jockey : Frankie Dettori, 5 wins (1996-7, 2001, 2004, 2007)
Current leading trainer : Sir Michael Stoute, 5 wins (1986, 1993-4, 1997, 2006)

SADLER'S WELLS HAT TRICK

Montjeu Stallion

“Was, St Nicholas Abbey and Camelot”

Hard on the heels of our announcement last week of the arrival of Sadler’s Wells’ grandson, Golden Sword, the potency of the male line was underlined again on Saturday. But before we go there, we’ve been amazed at the response we’ve had to the story on Golden Sword, obviously echoing the world’s great respect for his six-time Group One-winning sire, High Chaparral, and his achievement in getting six Group One winners in his first year at stud. We doubt there’s been so much excitement around a “Sword” since the reign of King Arthur, when he wrenched Excalibur out of the rock! Fellows in remote places like Dr. Ashley Parker and Highlands’ Mike Sharkey, were even onto the story. Annet Becker and Tarryn Liebenberg, fresh returned from a shopping spree in Australia where High Chaparral’s as “hot” as it gets, were back-slapped incessantly at the news.

Perhaps we should talk about Friday first though, when Galileo’s daughter, Was, trumped a top field in the Investec Oaks (Gr.1) at Epsom Downs, reminding us that the portents for the tribe of Sadler’s Wells at the world’s most famous racecourse, were strong. While Galileo is undoubtedly the best son at stud of Sadler’s Wells (himself the most successful European sire of all time,) it’s equally true that when it comes to rattling up Classic winners, no stallion, not even Sadler’s Wells, can match the rate of his other son, Montjeu, in the production of European Derby and Oaks aces, anywhere.

One of the great traditions on Investec Derby Day is the Coronation Cup (Gr.1), contested by older horses over the Derby course, and this year named for The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. When last year’s hero, St Nicholas Abbey, trotted up by 4,5 lengths on Saturday, we should’ve known what lay in store when it came to the Derby itself.

And so it proved, with Camelot maintaining his perfect record under murderous acceleration to gallop away by a growing 5 lengths. It seems his connections will be unable to resist the temptation of contesting the Triple Crown, despite the negative implications which accrue against a stallion prospect that’s stayed the 14½ furlongs of the St Leger. This is something no horse has come close to achieving since Nijinsky, Britain’s last Triple Crown hero in 1970, and it didn’t do his stud prospects any harm either, though it has to be said that “chivalry” was still a decent word in those days.

For those who believe in the spiritual world, you might say there’s less of a coincidence in the announcement by us of Golden Sword’s arrival at Summerhill and Camelot, King Arthur’s fabled stronghold, than at first meets the eye. Could this be the start of a new legend? Certainly, the handicappers believe so, as they rated this Derby performance on a par with Sea The Stars’ in 2009.

Back to earth now, and Jackson’s smashing victory in the Daily News 2000 (Gr.1) at Greyville on Saturday. That he is the best middle distance three-year-old in the land is indisputable, and it seems the only thing that can stop him now in the Vodacom Durban July, is his merit rating and the weight they’ll be put on his shoulders in handicap conditions. It’s likely he’ll have to carry as big a burden as any three-year-old has ever done in Africa’s greatest horse race. It’s a matter now, of just how good he is.

South Africa is blessed to have two world-class sophomore colts this year, Variety Club at a mile and Jackson at a trip, and we must surely all be clapping hands at the prospect that these two exceptional animals will one day get their chance to show the world just how good our horses are.

For the record, Jackson is another of the Sadler’s Wells crew, being a son of the highly-promising Dynasty, himself a champion and a grandson of the great European sire. Saturday 2nd June 2012, a timely reminder of just how valuable the old man’s genes are, and when they’re transmitted, potent their influence is.

Editor’s note: That Camelot’s performance was rated on a par with Sea The Stars’, puts Golden Sword’s Derby performance (just 2 lengths off Sea The Stars) into perspective. In Camelot’s field (and without the victor,) Golden Sword was a Derby winner by 3 lengths!

We would be failing in our duty if we did not mention the exceptional effort in the Daily News 2000 of Shogunnar, who was denied second place by a half length by the substantially more experienced Vettel. Shogunnar is a son of the Royal Whip Stakes (Gr.2) hero, Solskjaer (by Danehill), and went into the race with just three starts under his belt. He joins Ice Axe as another standout colt for his 120 Timeform-rated sire. While he’ll pick up a hefty penalty for his Group One place, Shogunnar looks an outstanding prospect for the Gold Circle Derby later this month. His mother, Surfer’s Eye, was acquired by Judge Alan Magid a couple of years back, and as one of our most regular blog correspondents, the Judge will be tickled at the outcome. Rejoice, Judge, there are several hundred others at Summerhill who share your pleasure.

GOLDEN SWORD STANDING AT SUMMERHILL STUD

Golden Sword Stallion

“Silence is Golden”

Continuing their policy of only standing stallions of quality racing class, South Africa’s Champion Breeders of the past seven consecutive seasons, Summerhill Stud, have acquired the 122 Timeform-rated son of High Chaparral, Golden Sword. While European racing fans will remember him for his consummate victory in one of the principal Derby trials, the Chester Vase (Gr.3), South Africans and those in the Gulf will recall his rattling finishes from behind in Dubai, where he ran the fastest 2000 metres ever, a record which still stands. It’s arguable though that Golden Sword’s finest moment came in the Investec Derby (Gr.1) at Epsom, where he was beaten a tad over two lengths by the world champion, Sea The Stars. With less than a furlong to go, Golden Sword looked to cause the upset of the decade, as he battled it out with Sea The Stars going to the line.

While it was expected when he first arrived at Coolmore that his dual Breeders’ Cup-winning sire High Chaparral, would bask in the shadow of his much-vaunted paternal half-brother, Galileo, the former’s career to date tells a vastly different story. With six Group One heroes in both hemispheres, High Chaparral became the first stallion since his own illustrious sire, Sadler’s Wells, to have that many winners at the highest level in his first year at stud. Any association with the progeny of High Chaparral immediately reminds us of So You Think, one of the world’s top-rated middle distance horses of last year, yet it’s a tribute to the class of Golden Sword that he is the next highest ranked among his sire’s stock. That he enjoyed the admiration of his champion trainer, Mike de Kock is evident: “Golden Sword was the best horse of a classy generation in my overseas string. At his best, he was a serious international competitor.”

Speaking from Summerhill, head stallion man of twenty-five years, Greig Muir, remarked “Golden Sword is a big, elegant horse much in the mould of So You Think, and provides breeders with a welcome source of one of the most valuable bloodlines in the world. We’re delighted to have ventured here with Drakenstein StudWilgersbosdrift Stud, Moutonshoek and long-time Summerhill client, Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. In any other year, he might’ve been a Derby winner, and he would not have been in South Africa if that were the case.”
