TBA Sales Complex, Gosforth Park, South Africa

Gross revenue and average prices reached record highs at last weekend’s 2 day Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale at the TBA Sales Complex. Of the 202 catalogued 2-year-olds some 169 were sold, grossing R38million. That translates to an average price of R229k, up 20% on the corresponding sale last year. Remarkably, the average was just fractionally less than what was achieved at the 2012 National Yearling Sale (R233k).

Top price was R2million for an Australian-bred colt by Tale Of The Cat. The youngster is the first foal of his US-bred unraced dam, from the female line of Dancing Brave, and had been bought earlier this year in Australia for A$42k.

Local heroes Jet Master, Var and Trippi filled the next three places, price-wise. A half brother by Var to Gr.3 placed Stakes winner Jet Jamboree made R1.6million, a handsome return on his R600k purchase price at the Cape Yearling Sale in January of this year. Even more profitable was the pinhook on the full sister by Jet Master to multiple Gr.1 placed Stakes winner Lizarre and Gr.3 placed Lake Arthur. She made third top-price of R1.5million, having been bought at the 2012 Cape Sale for R350k.

Trippi’s 2-year-old son out of Sportsworld mare, Spoil Sport, was listed as a R300k vendor buy-back at the 2012 National Sale. The youngster, who is full brother to multiple 2-year-old winner Yellow Card, was knocked down this time at R1.1million.

Gr.1 winner Ivory Trail had been catalogued and withdrawn at both the Cape Sale and the National Sale in 2012. The wait proved worthwhile, as the Cheveley-bred fetched a cool R1million here.

The last of the millionaires was a Fastnet Rock 2-year-old out of a Sadler’s Wells daughter of Champion European sprinter Habibti. The youngster is half brother to German and Italian Gr.1 winner Morshdi, and had made the shortlist of most of the judges at the Ready To Run gallops three weeks prior to this sale.

The overall median price at the sale went up to R150k, from R90k and R100k in the two previous years. Colt’s median increased to R180k from R110k in the both previous years. Fillies didn’t lag, with their median going to R130k, from R90k both previous years. These figures were much the same as those at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale of 2012, where the overall median also was R150k, with colts slightly less at R170k, and fillies on par with R150k.

The traditional Ready To Run Sale, with its massive annual restricted-race incentive, has truly come of age. The presence of 2-year-olds by top class international sires (who do deliver!) and the pin-hooking opportunities (on both the local and international stock) will no doubt continue to make the original Ready To Run one of the major events of the year.

SUMMERHILL GALLOPS : TIME TO HONE YOUR HORSE SKILLS

Emperors Palace Ready To Run Gallops
Friday 15 October 2010

charl pretorius racingwebCharl Pretorius www.racingweb.co.zaSummerhill Stud’s Ready To Run Gallops take place this Friday 15 October and it’s a great occasion not only to meet trainers and horsemen, but to learn about young horses and hone your selecting skills.

When you watch the youngsters gallop, a few of them are guaranteed to strike a chord. You will jot down their names and remember them, and once they’re on track (and winning!), you will feel a sense of pride and a feeling of “My word, I can actually pick them?!”

Sure, the conformation and pedigree gurus have an edge, but many champs have been selected on sheer gut feel by owners with no experience, individuals who simply saw something that they liked and made the call. Your four-hour drive to Mooi River (from Johannesburg) will be well worth your while.

That’s the way it works, for those who didn’t know. If you’ve become adept at spotting runners that “go down short” (and often being scratched when you tipped it would be scratched), and at getting a winning feeling when you know a horse is “moving beautifully to the start”, you already possess the skills needed to spot the horses that have nice, flowing actions from those that look ‘scratchy’.

The sense of knowing when a horse has a nice action differs from horseman to horseman and of course a nice action doesn’t guarantee you a good horse, but it helps! Selecting one or two young horses among many is a personal skill that comes with years of watching horses run in a race or close observation on the gallop track. One man’s ‘jet’ will be another man’s ‘spider’ but in this weird and wonderful sport there seems to be a flexible niche where every gallop-watcher finds his ‘special ones’. The ‘gurus’ get their good horses every year, and the ‘amateurs’ get theirs too!

The Ready To Run gallops at Summerhill’s magnificent establishment is all about spotting horses who already show a good measure of confidence at this young age and move smoothly. When they exhibit these traits, maybe 6 out of 10 will win you at least one race. This is just an estimate and perhaps it is too high, maybe too low. It comes down to personal observation skills, experience and in the end just a passion for the galloping thoroughbred.

It doesn’t matter how they are bred or if they’re not the best lookers. Ask Gary Alexander about Pierre Jourdan. Gary liked the way this one handled himself as a youngster, saw something special in the way he moved and something struck a nerve. PJ cost 60k, he’s earned 3,4 mil so far!

Owning a horse is a great adventure and the Ready To Run presents excellent value every year.

NO PEACE FOR THE WICKED

Summerhill Stallion Day 2008

We’re scarcely out of the mire of the National Sales, and the Summerhill team are beavering away at the next round of responsibilities. On the agri front, this is “clean up” time, with road repairs, tree planting, dam building etc, going ahead at a furious pace under the tutelage of Barry Watson.

Tarryn Liebenberg, Michael Booysen, Kerry Jack, Annet Becker and Mick Goss have been seen scouring the paddocks as part of the selection process for the Ready To Run Sale in November, and the end of April sees our mating panel revisiting each mare physically, then sitting down in early May to consider their proposals for the forthcoming season, which gets underway on the 1st September.

That’s not all though, as the business of vetting every weanling on the farm kicked off last Saturday, with a view to next year’s sales and assisting in mating deliberations. You might think this is miles in advance, but there are so many things that flow from the process, including the sorting of these groups, and the influence they have on future stallion selection, etc. It’s a critical aspect of our business.

Most years we manage an “absentee” conference away from our premises, where we crunch out issues affecting the business. This time around, much of that work has been addressed in our divisional business plans and budgets, so this year the team will be gathering at home with a view to developing subject matter to meet the demands of the new Al Maktoum School Of Management Excellence (click here) and its curriculum. Lecture topics and lecturers will be identified in the process, and we’ll be running a Spring School for our clients in August, to bring them closer to the processes which take place at Summerhill in the breeding and raising of future champions. This way, our friends and customers will become more intimately acquainted with the subtleties, the detail and the nuances of the breeding game and their horses in particular, and while they’re about it, they’ll be enjoying the sumptuous comfort of Hartford House (click here) and Jackie Cameron’s Top Ten award-winning restaurant.

It’s also “brochure time” again (can you believe it?) so the boss and Filly Hayward of Xpressions Advertising and Design will be putting their heads together with a view to producing our annual brag sheet, due for release at the end of July. Of course, we have a few tricks up our sleeves in the form of new stallion prospects, but any announcements on that score right now are premature.

In the admin office, Linda Norval and her team are rushing around, pulling all the facets that go into our Stallion Day together. Remember, this takes place on the first Sunday of July (the day after the Vodacom Durban July) and last year we had no fewer than 14 nations in attendance. Besides their director delegates, the Japanese Racing Association sent but a full camera crew to film the proceedings; the board of directors of the Singapore Turf Club and the Korea Racing Association were here, the Hong Kong Breeders Club, headed by Peter and Nicole Yip were on board, and so were a number of Turkish breeders. The Stronachs of Champion American breeders, Adena Springs turned up, as did a large delegation of West Australia’s breeding community, who’ve graced the day five consecutive years.

From the continental, United States, Adena Springs were not alone though. We had several other American delegates, not the least of whom were Robert and Robin Muir, who were here to participate in the unveiling of their South African Derby winner, Ravishing.

Not to be outdone, one of racing’s most recognisable faces “Legs” Elaine Lawlor, director of Goffs in Ireland, was on hand with several of her compatriots. We also had the usual very welcome gathering of Brits with us, together with people from France and Ireland, and of course, as always, Dubai was well represented. Then our friends in Africa, from Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Kenya, were welcomed, together with several hundred of our own countrymen.

Summerhill Stallion Day, now famously known as the “best bash in racing”, demands some organisation, and there’s nobody better equipped to deal with this than Linda Norval, who was here the day the gates opened in 1979. While she took a sabbatical in between, she’s been back on the roster almost a decade and she’s as energetic as ever, and looking forward to Stallion Day to welcome you back to Summerhill.
