WHEN IT COMES TO JUDGING, THIS IS THE FULL BENCH

“EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN 2010”

“Hindsight is an exact science”, they say, and while in racing it’s never going to be quite “exact”, making your judgement after you’ve seen a horse gallop is a lot closer to the real thing than having to do so with the “walk-up” of a conventional sale. The increasing popularity of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale is the best evidence of the value of being able to make your pick after you’ve clocked the gallop.

In what was a “world first” at the time, Summerhill solicited the expertise of a panel of judges to provide guidance to would-be buyers at their gallops, which take place on the farm about three weeks before the sale. They didn’t stop there though : they invited some of the country’s leading horsemen to participate. These men, despite their own interest in the sale, have served this purpose selflessly. Mike de Kock, Joey Ramsden, Jehan Malherbe, Michael Roberts, Graeme Hawkins, Michael Azzie, Eamonn Cullen and Dean Kannemeyer and the convenorship of Craig Peters, revered judges by any stretch, have added a unique dimension to the sale, endorsed by the growing attendance at the gallops. They no longer fall into the “nice-to-attend” category. If you’re serious about racing, this is a “must”.

The panel’s scoreboard over the past few years includes the Graded Stakes winners, and Grade One performers, Imbongi, Phunyuka, Umngazi, Galant Gagnant, Art Of War, Winning Leap, Pierre Jourdan, Fisani and Havasha, a roll call in earthly terms to rival the word of God.

Just a few weeks back, the news broke of a proposed increase in the stake for the associated Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup from R1,5 million to R2 million. Simultaneously, the stakeholders announced the introduction of a series of five trials in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, to facilitate guaranteed opportunities of a run for would-be candidates which might have faced elimination in the maidens otherwise.

Getting a run though, doesn’t necessarily get you into the race. Such was the quality of last year’s entry that 29 of them were already winners, so the organisers have inaugurated a second panel, along the lines of the Vodacom Durban July. From October forward, the NHA’s Roger Smith, Phumelela’s Patrick Davis and Gold Circle’s Graeme Hawkins will publish a merit list, reflecting qualifiers above the line, and providing connections of those below it with an idea of what they need to do to get over the line.

There’s R1,5 million at stake this year, and if the history of subscription for this event repeats itself next year, there’ll be R2 million up for grabs in 2011. It’s about the best deal in racing.

EAGLE MOUNTAIN RETIRED

EAGLE MOUNTAIN
(ROCK OF GIBRALTAR x MASSKANA)

Attendees at last October’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Gallops at Summerhill, will recall the impressions left by the first progeny of the Freshman sires, Way West, Hobb Alwahtan and Cataloochee. In the event, they sold like the market had developed a renewed appetite for new sires again, and this weekend vindicated their judgement, when Waywest Goddess left the opposition for dead in the Ruffian Stakes (Listed). Sheikh Mohammed’s Hobb Alwahtan stock will, by nature, take longer to show their mettle, so it was encouraging to see two of them nominated for the R125,000 Sentinel Stakes in Durban, even though, in the end both were unfortunately withdrawn. They were obviously showing their trainers enough to warrant inclusion, so we can only look forward to their names among the nominations in the weeks ahead.

The Sheikh’s been in the news again with the announcement by Mike de Kock that his globetrotting Eagle Mountain (Rock of Gibraltar x Masskana by Darshaan), winner of the 2008 G1 Hong Kong Cup, has been retired after sustaining a tendon injury in training. The six-year old bay finished runner-up in the 2007 G1 Epsom Derby and G1 Champion Stakes when trained by Aidan O’Brien, and preceded his career highlight with a runner-up finish in the 2008 GI Breeders’ Cup Turf in his second start for Mike de Kock.

“This is his third career-threatening injury, and enough is enough,” the trainer said. “He’s been a great servant to Sheikh Mohammed and the stable, and he did us proud. Eagle Mountain’s future as a stallion is being discussed, and we will entertain offers for him. He has an amazing race record and was one of their best horses I have ever worked with.” Eagle Mountain, who finished second in a February 19 conditions event at Meydan in his final start, retires with a career record of 19-5-7-1 and earnings of £1,790,492.

BACK YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT

TWENTY/20 HINDSIGHT

The great thing about dealing with Summerhill, is you can see for yourself.
The results are in Black and White.
And you can see them gallop on the farm, before you buy.
That’s like hindsight. Twenty/20.

THIS CAT’S COOKIN’, BABE

cataloochee CATALOOCHEE

In a land in which speed is king, he was the Emperor. Whether it was Turffontein, Newmarket, the Vaal or Scottsville, once Cataloochee hit the front, no horse ever passed him.

On his way, he ran the fastest 1000 metres in recorded history. In the 1200 metres of the Golden Horse Casino Sprint, he ran faster than any horse had ever run. To understand what that means, you have to visit the Honour Roll.

And now, it seems, his progeny have come to understand their heritage. Thus far four runners; one winner (Ms Loochee by five); one runner-up on debut (Ikeechobee); and two third (Zee Cat and Jeanre), also on debut.

Those that watched the Emperors Palace Ready To Run gallops at Summerhill, will remember our predictions. All the sadder, that we’re talking of the dead. It’s the way of the world, we’re afraid, but the old Cat’s up there somewhere, and he’s doubtless talkin’ up a storm about his babies.
