DEATH OF RED RANSOM

RED RANSOM EUTHANIZED

Leading sire Red Ransom has been put down following complications arising from abdominal surgery in Australia on the weekend. He was 22 years old.

“A horse of great character, he will be sadly missed by the partners and staff of Vinery,” said Vinery representatives.

The son of Roberto had a brief racing career for Paul Mellon, setting a track record on his two-year-old debut but was retired due to injury after two more starts. He was a leading first crop sire in the US, with five juvenile Stakes winners, and his first crop son Sri Pekan won three Group races at two in Britain in 1994.

On Mellon’s death, Red Ransom was bought by a syndicate which enabled him to remain at Vinery in Kentucky, as well as shuttling to their Australian base, though he moved to Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket in the spring of 2004.

Red Ransom has sired 13 Gr1 winners, among them the ill-fated Electrocutionist, Oaks heroine Casual Look and Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Perfect Sting, while his Gr1-winning stallion sons include Red Clubs, Shadwell’s Ekraar, German Horse of the Year Ransom O’War, and Australia’s Charge Forward and Red Dazzler, while his Gr2 winner Intikhab stands in Ireland.

Red Ransom did not return to Dalham Hall this spring, remaining at Vinery in Australia, where 2009 has brought Gr1 successes for his progeny All American, Duporth, Onemorenomore and Typhoon Tracy.

PROGENY OF RED RANSOM, GALILEO, HUSSONET AND ANABAA
FOR 2009 EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN SALE

That’s the headline with which Australia’s Daily Stallion Bulletin introduced their piece on the progeny of Red Ransom in Australia this year. Sire already of 13 Grade One winners around the world, this prolific son of Roberto has been on fire in Australia this year, with Grade One victories accruing to Typhoon Tracy (ex South African sprint sensation; Tracy’s Element), unbeaten to date; Onemorenomore, the Champagne Stakes hero, and Duporth, star of the BTC Cup (Gr.1) on May 9th. These achievements apart, Red Ransom is also the sire of Australia’s leading first season stallion, Charge Forward, a resident of John Messara’s Arrowfield Stud in the Hunter Valley, whose book for the forthcoming season overflows as a result of his excellent start.

Which brings us to the point. Included in Summerhill’s Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run draft for 2009 is an outstanding Vinery-bred specimen by Red Ransom, a big strong, scopey colt of great presence. He landed at the farm towards the end of last week, together with two daughters, if you can believe it, of the outstanding stallion in Europe right now, Galileo. Also on board were a son of each of two of the worlds best stallions in opposite hemispheres, Hussonet and Anabaa, the latter sadly recently deceased, which adds a rarity value to this colt.

There’ll obviously be more on these horses as we get closer to the sale, but for the time being, it’s lip-licking stuff.

Onemorenomore

Onemorenomore (2 c Palia by Last Tycoon (Ire)) became Red Ransom’s 12th Group 1 winner and first juvenile Group 1 winner when taking out the Champagne Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Red Ransom who returned to Vinery Australia last year is having a stellar season with seven stakes-winners and a further 11 stakes-placegetters in Australia and New Zealand. He is also represented by the undefeated Group 1 winner Typhoon Tracy who is also out of a Last Tycoon mare, Tracy’s Element.

An outstanding son of Red Ransom is included in Summerhill’s Ready to Run draft for November’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.
