MULLINS BAY - The Life Of Riley

Mullins BayMullins BayWith the arrival of Mullins Bay at Summerhill life has certainly become more interesting for the staff here in the Admin offices at Hartford House. Mullins Bay is in a paddock just opposite the offices, and we can sit (when we’re supposed to be working, just don’t tell the boss!), and watch one of the best performed sons of the great Machiavellian grazing away contentedly in his paddock. Certainly one of life’s greatest pleasures!!

After an arduous and lengthy campaign in the UK, Dubai and Italy, Mullins Bay is back here for a well earned and deserved rest. In superb condition with a generous amount of dappling, Mullins Bay has obviously settled down quite comfortably to life here on the farm. After all, what could be better than spending your days contentedly grazing in your paddock and

MACHIAVELLIAN : The "M" Factor

Mr ProspectorMr Prospector (turfbrasil)With Danehill and his super star progeny in the spotlight on pretty much a continual basis, some of the other well known sires have tended to be somewhat overshadowed.

One of these is champion sire Machiavellian, who was euthanized in 2004 following a bout of laminitis. This Kentucky born son of the great Mr. Prospector, (whose son Muhtafal stands at Summerhill), stood for his entire career at Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud. Winning all of his three starts in France as a two year old, including the Prix Morny Agence Francaise and Prix de la Salamandre. If that were not enough he was also crowned France’s Champion Juvenile Male. As a three year old, he won the Prix Djebel, and was second in the General Accident Two Thousand Guineas in England. He retired with four wins from seven starts and earnings of $355.790. At one stage he had a Timeform rating of 123 and was known as the “sire of sires”.

His legacy lives on in his offspring, three of which are based here at Summerhill. The imposing and majestic Kahal, who from two until his retirement at six, won eight races. His most impressive performances however came as a four year old, when he came second in the Listed Dubai Duty Free and third in a Group Two challenge. At that stage his Timeform rating was 120. When Kahal was five he went on to win the Group Three Morvich Handicap and managed a respectable third in the Presidents Cup Listed race at Nad al Sheba. The best though was yet to come, when as a six year old he won the Group Two Nearctic Handicap coming up in the last few hundred metres to win in impressive style. In the words of his Hall of Fame trainer, Neil Drysdale, he was on the brink of Grade One glory, when his retirement was announced and he was sent to Summerhill, where he has stood ever since, garnering much admiration and attention through the success of his offspring.

Kahal’s sons and daughters have certainly left their mark on the South African racing scene. His Group winning progeny include Emperor Napoleon (MR 110), Bhekinkhosi, Majestic Sun, Desert Links, and the now deceased vanquisher of Pick Six, Khebraat, who was showing immense promise. His daughters have excelled, with the highly talented and multiple Group winner, Bold Ellinore, whose victories include the KZN Fillies Guineas, (where she accounted for six Grade One winners) the Listed Flamboyant Stakes, the Grade Two Tibouchina Stakes, and finally the cherry on top, the Grade One Garden Province Stakes on Vodacom July day in 2007, (the latter race secured her the title of Filly of the Year). Not to be outdone, Evening Attire showed her talent with a win in the Listed Bauhinia Handicap in 2007.

Now one of the nation’s hottest young sires, Kahal heads an auspicious trio of Machiavellian’s sons, Sheikh Mohammed’s well-performed and highly popular, Hobb Alwahtan, and our greatly vaunted and much-admired “newey”, Mullins Bay.

The term “sire of sires” doesn’t accrue lightly. Forty eight of Machiavellian’s offspring are Stakes winners and they include Dubai World Cup winners Street Cry and Almutawakel, major European champions; Titus Livius and Whitewater Affair, to name a few. His other English based son, Storming Home, was a two-time Grade 1 turf winner in the US. That said, between Street Cry (USA), Medicean (UK) and Kahal, Machiavellian has arrived in no lightweight fashion as a mega producer of world class stallions and Summerhill counts itself lucky to have spotted the gap.

CAUSE CELEBRE’: MULLLINS BAY

Mullins BayMullins Bay (BBC)The histories of most great stud farms have been defined by at least one great stallion. To be associated (as we have) with Northern Guest, a Liloy or a Home Guard, in any studman’s lifetime, is a privilege.

Yet for every one that aspires to greatness, there are dozens that fail, because that’s the way nature’s decreed it. Look at the wild kingdom, and you’ll find one herd bull, and plenty of “hangers-on” in the bachelor herd. That’s why selection is so important in a stud farm’s story, and so critical to the questions of success or failure, as the case may be.

This week witnessed the arrival of our newest recruit, Mullins Bay, and we speak here of one of the world’s top ½ of racehorses, not that frightingly expensive piece of real estate in the Caribbean.

This fellow is one of Summerhill’s all-time favourite sons, as he took us to the World Cup in Dubai, to England’s Champion Stakes, and Italy’s Premio Ribot, under the farm’s silks.

It’s a long time since any stallion prospect saw such a pilgrimage of visitors, principally members of the staff whose affections recall a racehorse of considerable talent, courage and consistency.

No doubt, in their wildest dreams as kids, neither Barry Clements nor Mick Goss ever imagined themselves connected to an animal of such commanding presence, such pedigree, and as important as any, so generous a spirit.

Welcome home, Boy!

Mullins Bay to race on before stud career

(according to the European Bloodstock News)

mullins bayMullins BayIt has been announced that the regally-bred Mullins Bay, recently arrived in South Africa, will race next summer before taking up stud duties for his current owners, Summerhill Stud. A 525,000gns Tattersalls yearling, the six-year-old son of Machiavellian is a half-brother to five winners, including the very useful Stagecraft and is a Gr.3 winner himself. His dam, Bella Colora, was a Gr.1 winner who was placed in the 1,000 Guineas and hails from one of the most famous Meon Valley families in the book.

Sold to his South African connections out of Ballydoyle, he was campaigned in Dubai last year by Mike De Kock with a tilt at the Dubai World Cup in mind. Sadly, niggling injuries forced a change of plan and he was an excellent third in the Gr.2 Godolphin Mile on World Cup night when in need of the run. He has since had three starts in the UK, including a third in the Gr.3 Select Stakes. His most recent outing was in the Gr.1 Champion Stakes, when Jamie Spencer was unable to settle him in front.

Mike de KockDe Kock explained, “He is in South Africa now and will be a major addition to the sire ranks there. It was a real shame at Newmarket, as it was the one time we had him 100% fit. He will have a break at Summerhill Stud before returning to training in January, hopefully recovered from the joint injury which has plagued him. He should then be ready to race in the summer before  retiring.” The Gr.1 Gold Challenge in June has been penciled inas a target, along with the Gr.1 Durban July on the first Saturday of July, as connections seek that elusive win in the highest class.

Boost for Mullins Bay : Ramonti's Fourth Group 1 Win

Mullins BayMullins Bay (bbc)So we all saw what a great horse Ramonti is when he scooped his fourth Group One in Sunday’s Hong Kong Cup. He’s not only taken Europe’s best milers to the cleaners three times this season, but he’s stretched his speed to 10 furlongs. The significance for South Africa is that at the beginning of this four- time Group 1 winning sequence, Mullins Bay was second to him in the Premio Ribot (1600m Gr2) in Rome. An effort all the more meritorious for the fact that at a trip probably short of his best and on his first outing in thirteen months, Mullins Bay was able to give the World Champion-elect a proper run for his money.

Mullins Bay is currently in quarantine in Cape Town, his final mission being the 1600m Gold Challenge (Gr1), and then the Vodacom Durban July (Gr1). And then he’ll be with us on Stallion Day, the first Sunday in July. A thought to savour.
