SUMMER READY TO RUN SALE : READY TO ROAR

Emperors Palace Summerhill Ready To Run Sale

EMPERORS PALACE
SUMMER READY TO RUN SALE
22 February 2012

The preparations for the Emperors Palace Summer Ready To Run Sale, to be staged in the Al Maktoum School Of Management Excellence at Summerhill Stud next Wednesday 22nd, are well underway. The catalogues were posted last Monday, together with DVDs of the gallops, and there are all sorts of bullish sentiments emanating from the home of the champion breeders.

Last week Summerhill’s Ready To Run supremo, Tarryn Liebenberg, suggested that the catalogue was up there with the best Ready To Run publications of the past, and that is very quickly evident at a glance. There are close relatives to champions Icy Air and Bridal Paths, millionaires Catmandu and Amphitheatre, and Stakes performers Salutation, Ecole Militaire, Nondweni, Coastal Waltz, Similitude, Dignify, J&B Met hero Angus, Ice Axe, Cape Tango and Poppy, and a number of smart updates from siblings to several of the candidates.

According to Liebenberg “there’s a lot of talk from the training yards of the first runners by Mullins Bay and Stronghold, which reinforces the presence in the catalogue of Kahal, presently the nation’s fourth leading stallion, and the perennial top-flight performer, Muhtafal. We’ve already witnessed a winner, as well as a sparkling debut performance from a Joey Ramsden first-timer from the progeny of Stronghold, and if anything, our expectations for Mullins Bay’s stock were slightly ahead”. Michael Holmes, who convenes the sale as part of his Horses In Training show, tells us “there’s already solid interest in the Ready To Run, so word of the gallops is already out. There are some exciting prospects in the line-up, and if last year’s sale is anything to go by, there will be real value for those looking for it. Ever since the catalogue hit the street, there’s been a noticeable increase in the bookings of tables at the sale”.

While the Summerhill management are understandably reluctant to single out any individuals, the grapevine is banging a bongo drum with strains that include fillies by Kahal (Lots 26, 36 and 49;) Mullins Bay’s daughters (lot 20, a three-quarter sister to last week’s impressive Gary Alexander winner, Classic Illusion and lots 34 and 39), two by Muhtafal (lots 11 and 21) and two very well related Stronghold fillies (lots 22 and 44). The appropriately named Kahal colts, Flyfirstclass (lot 18) and No Worries (lot 31,) and the Ravishing filly (lot 45) look particularly smart on the Summerhill website (www.summerhill.co.za) and click the Sales tab and then Ready To Run.

The truth though, lies in their performances at the gallops, and for our money, there’s plenty more to this draft that the grapevine can cope with.

Please contact Michael Holmes Bloodstock and ask for Edwina (031 309 5522) or Megan Romeyn on 083 601 5242. Table bookings on a first-come, first-served basis.

IT'S CUP TIME AGAIN

KZN Breeders Awards - Pierre Jourdan

KZN BREEDERS’ AWARDS
Bellwood Cottages, 25 November 2011

Mick Goss - Summerhill Stud CEOMick Goss
Summerhill Stud CEO
The annual KZN Breeders’ Awards take place this Friday evening, so besides the Sansui Summer Cup, there are vital things happening in our neck of the woods. There’ll be those who will say they expected it of the Champion Breeders of the country to hold a healthy hand among the nominees, and it is so. However, at times like these, we remember that much of what we’ve achieved here had to do with the fact that many our racing heroes were co-bred with our many partners, a good number of whom live in jurisdictions thousands of kilometres away.

Summerhill is home not only to horses belonging to our many local clients and friends, but we have on the property the biggest concentration of foreign-owned thoroughbreds in the world. Astonishing really, when you remember that there’s the world to choose from, yet they’ve picked this farm 10kms outside the dustiest little hamlet of Mooi River, at the southernmost tip of what the smart people in the north dub the darkest continent. I guess it’s a tribute if it’s nothing else, to the camaraderie that belongs only to those that know the brotherhood of the racehorse.

We salute you all, and we’ll be especially mindful of you on Friday evening when the names of those who’ve made the finals go up in lights. Here they are :

Milestone : I’ve just been reminded by our local historian, Megan Romeyn, whose late father was the curator of the Rohde Museum, which houses anything and everything of historic value in the Mooi River district, that today marks the anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy of the United States. It’s 48 years since that fateful day, and I’m sure just about anybody whose memory goes back to that time, will remember where they were when they first heard the news. Let us know if your memory is as good as we think it is.

AL MAKTOUM
SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT EXCELLENCE

We’re humbled daily by the kindness and generosity shown by big business in the advocacy of educational opportunities in our part of the world. Below is a message penned by one of the sponsors of the Al Maktoum School Of Management Excellence, N3 Toll Concession Commercial Manager, Con Roux.

“Hi Megan,

Please convey my warmest appreciation to Mick and Cheryl for the invitation to visit Summerhill yesterday. I shall remember the students’ Powerpoint presentations for a very long time. It was incredibly moving to see them stand before such an illustrious gathering, overcome their nerves and language difficulties, and present the learning from their course in an almost reverential manner. The course clearly has meant the world to them. Summerhill can be justly proud of what has been achieved and N3TC is privileged to have played a small part.

Thank you Heather and your students for being such an inspiration to us all.

Thank you also for the warm and generous hospitality. I was thrilled beyond words to see Ed and Margie Southey again after all these years!

Best Regards,
Con Roux

MULLINS BAY - The Life Of Riley

Mullins BayMullins BayWith the arrival of Mullins Bay at Summerhill life has certainly become more interesting for the staff here in the Admin offices at Hartford House. Mullins Bay is in a paddock just opposite the offices, and we can sit (when we’re supposed to be working, just don’t tell the boss!), and watch one of the best performed sons of the great Machiavellian grazing away contentedly in his paddock. Certainly one of life’s greatest pleasures!!

After an arduous and lengthy campaign in the UK, Dubai and Italy, Mullins Bay is back here for a well earned and deserved rest. In superb condition with a generous amount of dappling, Mullins Bay has obviously settled down quite comfortably to life here on the farm. After all, what could be better than spending your days contentedly grazing in your paddock and
