THE MAKING OF MACHIAVELLIAN

40% of Danehill’s foals out of
Machiavellian mares are Stakes winners

Students of the “noble art” will recall our piece in the Summerhill Sire’s Brochure of two years ago on the Machiavellian and Danehill factors. That announcement divulged the strategy behind our thinking, given the preponderance of Northern Dancer blood in the female strains on the farm, and the success which Danehill and Machiavellian had enjoyed with these internationally. This wasn’t happenstance. There was another factor, and that was the origins which all of Northern Dancer, Machiavellian and Danehill have in common; last weekend in America, a filly by the name Justaroundmidnight, revealed again the chemistry which a combination of these genes seems to inspire. Before we hand you over to Andrew Caulfield and his insights in the Thoroughbred Daily News, there’s one statistic really worthy of notice, and it comes in his final paragraph. 40% of Danehill’s foals out of Machiavellian mares are Stakes winners, which provides the succour for next season’s matings. Over to Andrew :

The excellent Irish stallion Danehill Dancer has recently enjoyed a notable few days with his American-based daughters. On Sunday, his ex-Irish filly Justaroundmidnight sprang a surprise in taking the Marshua’s River Stakes G3, and this week, his Grade I-winning daughter Ave came under the hammer at Keeneland, selling for $1.4 million.

Danehill Dancer has been represented by some topnotch sons in Europe and Australia, such as the Group 1 winners Mastercraftsman, Choisir, Where Or When, Alfred Nobel and Light Fantastic, but he owes his reputation in North America largely to his daughters.

Justaroundmidnight is his seventh daughter to win a North American stakes event, her predecessors including Ave (G1 Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes), Alexander Tango (G1 Garden City Stakes), Callwood Dancer (G2 Nassau Stakes and second in G1 E.P. Taylor Stakes), Carribean Sunset (second G1 Diana Stakes), Good Mood (G3 Regret Stakes) and the Grade 3-placed Golden Balls.

The interesting aspect of Justaroundmidnight’s pedigree is that she is out of a daughter of Machiavellian, the champion European two-year-old of 1989.

Although best known in America as the sire of Street Cry, Machiavellian was certainly no one-hit wonder, and the influence of this son of Mr. Prospector is spreading far afield.

What makes Machiavellian of particular interest to many breeders is the fact that his dam Coup de Folie - a two-year-old group winner with a Timeform rating of 112 - was inbred 3x3 to Almahmoud. This remarkable mare had only three daughters, but each of the three became the dam of a champion sire, with Cosmah being responsible for Halo, Natalma for Northern Dancer and Bubbling Beauty for the French champion Arctic Tern.

As Machiavellian was himself inbred 3x4 to Native Dancer, he had two lines to each of Natalma’s parents.

This encouraged breeders to send him numerous granddaughters of Northern Dancer, and this cross resulted in 13 of his group winners, including his Group 1 winners Medicean, Storming Home, West Wind and Rebecca Sharp.

The two lines of Native Dancer and Almahmoud in Machiavellian’s pedigree also encouraged the idea of coupling his descendants with those of Danehill, a magnificent stallion inbred 3x3 to Natalma.

Danehill’s 10 foals out of Machiavellian mares featured nine winners, including four at stakes level. These stakes winners comprised Scintillation, a multiple Group 1 winner in Hong Kong, his sister Shania Dane, a dual Group 2 winner in Australia, and the British listed winners Miss Pinkerton and Coy. We also saw Danehill do well with Rafina, a sister to Machiavellian.

Their son Admiralofthefleet looked a fine prospect when he won the G2 Royal Lodge Stakes in 2006.

CARTIER RACING AWARDS 2009

The debate as to who will be named the top performer at the Eclipse Awards will continue into the new year, but there’s no controversy on the other side of the Atlantic. Christopher Tsui’s Sea the Stars was yesterday handed the accolade he had long since made a formality when named the Horse of the Year at the 2009 Cartier Awards.

At the latest ceremony, staged at Claridge’s Hotel in Mayfair, London, the historical feats achieved by the John Oxx-trained homebred were celebrated as he scooped the title of champion three-year-old colt alongside the main honor.

As he had on the racecourse, the bay son of the legendary Urban Sea left his title rivals in his wake in the points-and-vote system, sweeping the G1 2000 Guineas, G1 Epsom Derby, G1 Eclipse, G1 Juddmonte International, G1 Irish Champion and G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Among those shortlisted for the top prize were Ballymacoll’s G1 King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and G1 Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Conduit and Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor’s G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 St James’s Palace Stakes hero Mastercraftsman, the latter received the two-year-old colt award in 2008.

The Wertheimer brothers’ dual G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile heroine Goldikova was also in line for the Horse of the Year award and, although unlucky to come up against Sea the Stars in that category, was justly handed the champion older horse award. The Freddy Head-trained four-year-old also won the G1 Falmouth Stakes, G1 Prix Rothschild and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois prior to her dazzling display at Santa Anita.

Lady Bamford’s homebred Sariska gained the reward for completing the G1 English-Irish Oaks double by being named champion three-year-old filly ahead of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation Stakes heroine Ghanaati - also in the shortlist for the Horse of the Year title - and Prince Khalid Abdullah’s G1 Nassau Stakes and G1 Breeders’ Cup F/M Turf victress Midday.

St Nicholas Abbey, who burst to prominence late on with a highly impressive success in the G1 Racing Post Trophy, headed the two-year-old colt division, providing Aidan O’Brien with a seventh such title since 1999. Prior to his Doncaster triumph, the bay captured the G2 Beresford Stakes, a race collected by Sea the Stars the previous year.

Prince Khalid Abdullah’s G1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Special Duty was crowned champion two-year-old filly. Solskjaer’s brother Yeats, who retired this year after a sensational fourth G1 Gold Cup success, was named champion stayer and, in so doing, became the first to win a Cartier Award four times. The Searchers Syndicate’s G1 July Cup heroine Fleeting Spirit picked up the champion sprinter award. John Oxx, trainer of Sea the Stars, received the 2009 Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit. He joins previous honorees Queen Elizabeth II, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prince Khalid Abdullah, John Magnier, His Highness The Aga Khan and Lester Piggott.

FAME AND GLORY vs SEA THE STARS

DAVID vs GOLIATH

While Americans look forward to a clash between two generations of unbeaten fillies, Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra, Europeans look forward to their own battle royale, with Europe’s number one conditioner, Aidan O’Brien, relishing another crack at Sea The Stars with Fame And Glory.

His charge has twice finished runner-up to John Oxxs super star, in the Investec Derby and the Irish Champion Stakes.

However the master of Ballydoyle feels he warrants a third tilt at his rival, in an evenly-run race over a mile-and-half for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

“We are looking forward to it. Our horse has had his prep and we were very impressed with him at Leopardstown. He sat in there and for a horse who’d won an Irish Derby, we were very impressed with how he quickened up,” O’Brien told At The Races.

“There’s no doubt he has to improve but it was his first run back. He quickened up past Mastercraftsman and we were delighted with him.”

“The good thing is himself and Sea The Stars didn’t lock horns early and it could have been a gruelling race for his first run back.”

“The way it happened was lovely, Mick (Kinane) was very cool on his horse and picked him up late when Mastercraftsman just took a blow.”

“Hopefully the two of them will get to the Arc and all the questions will be answered.”

Timeform ranks SEA THE STARS as ‘All Time Great’

Scarcely had the ink dried on our piece on SEA THE STARS and RACHEL ALEXANDRA, than Sea The Stars’ merit rating was published.

Sea The Stars has joined the list of all-time greats after his stunning Irish Champion Stakes win at Leopardstown, according to Timeform – and there is the mouth-watering prospect of better to come.

Australian and New Zealand Bloodstock News reports that Timeform have provisionally given John Oxx’s colt a huge rating of 140, which puts him alongside Shergar, Dancing Brave and Dubai Millennium as the third best horse since 1970.

Only Brigadier Gerard (144) and Mill Reef (141) have been allotted bigger ratings by Timeform since 1970. Timeform’s Flat Editor Jamie Lynch commented: “Mastercraftsman (130) appears to have run his race in third, and there is also good reason for believing that Fame And Glory deserves a rating of 135, and to be bracketed in the same league as Sinndar (134), Galileo (134) and St Jovite (135).

“Therefore the form of the race looks solid, and we have given Sea The Stars a provisional rating of 140.

“Furthermore, Sea The Stars again didn’t look all out, leaving the impression there could be an even better performance in him if ever comes up against something able to test him fully. “He should now be classed as one of the all-time greats.”

2008 WORLD THOROUGHBRED RACEHORSE RANKINGS

world thoroughbred(Pharohs Choice/GEOS)

New Approach (Galileo) owned by Princess Haya of Jordan and Curlin (Smart Strike) owned by Stonestreet Stables LLC & Midnight Cry Stables emerged as the joint-top performers of 2008 after the World Thoroughbred Rankings were revealed in London yesterday.

The TDN reports that both were rated on 130 pounds by the panel of international handicappers, their deadlock coming as a result of New Approach’s six-length success in the Champion Stakes (Gr1) in October at Newmarket and Curlin’s exploits on the dirt when winning the Dubai World Cup (Gr1)at Nad Al Sheba in March as well as the Stephen Foster Handicap (Gr1) at Churchill Downs in June.

New Approach, who also took the Epsom Derby (Gr1) and Irish Champion Stakes (Gr1), was registering his second championship in the rankings, having dominated the two-year-old division in 2007, while Curlin was upped by two pounds from last year’s mark, when he shared the top dirt honors with Invasor.

Raven’s Pass (Elusive Quality), who also raced in the colors of Princess Haya of Jordan when rounding off his three-year-old campaign with successes in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr1) at Ascot in September and Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr1) on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride the following month, was a pound behind the dual champions on 129, while His Highness the Aga Khan’s Zarkava (Zamindar) was next best with a rating of 128. That was enough to secure the unbeaten Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr1) heroine the title of the world’s champion of her sex; it’s the highest achieved by a filly or mare since Miesque.

Languishing three pounds behind that stellar performer were Jerome Moss’ unbeaten Zenyatta (Street Cry) - rated the top dirt female on 125 pounds - and the Wertheimer Brothers’ fellow Breeders’ Cup heroine Goldikova (Anabaa).

Garry O’Gorman, senior Irish handicapper and co-chairman of the group of handicappers and racing secretaries who form the World Rankings Supervisory Committee, paid tribute to the distaffers of 2008. “This was a year of exceptional fillies,” Garry O’Gorman said. “Last year, I was excited by Darjina, Rags to Riches and Peeping Fawn, but these have blown them out of the water. Zarkava has been rated the best French filly since Miesque, Goldikova is the best female miler in 10 years and Zenyatta is the best filly in North America this century. Zenyatta and Goldikova both stay in training. Goldikova could emulate Miesque with back-to-back Breeders’ Cup Miles, while we can only dream how good Zenyatta might be.”

Of the remainder, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor’s five-time Group 1 winner Duke of Marmalade (Danehill) was top of the older horse category on turf with a rating of 127 pounds, while IEAH Stables’ Big Brown (Boundary) was the best sophomore on dirt courtesy of his victories in the first two legs of the Triple Crown. The 123-rated Midnight Lute (Real Quiet) and Sacred Kingdom (Encosta de Lago) shared the top sprinters’ title, while the European trio of Conduit (Dalakhani), Yeats (Sadler’s Wells) and Septimus (Sadler’s Wells) were together on 122 pounds in the stayers’ division.

For the fifth time in 10 years, it was Aidan O’Brien who was responsible for the highest-rated two-year-old colt after Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor’s Mastercraftsman (Danehill Dancer) inched the category with a rating of 122 pounds courtesy of his Phoenix Stakes (Gr1) success at The Curragh in August. He eclipsed the same ownership’s Prix Morny (Gr1) and Middle Park Stakes (Gr1) winner Bushranger (Danetime) by a pound, with Paul Reddam’s Racing Post Trophy (Gr1) hero Crowded House (Rainbow Quest) on 120 pounds. George Strawbridge’s unbeaten Rainbow View (Dynaformer) headed the two-year-old filly division with a mark of 118, three pounds clear of Khalid Abdullah’s Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1) winner Proportional (Beat Hollow).

Matthew Tester, the British Horseracing Authority’s two-year-old handicapper, reflected on a below-par set of ratings for the juvenile crop of 2008. “The mark of 122 is unusually low and results from the lack of an outstanding performance over the year,” he said. “The last time it was below 123 was in 2003 with Bago. I expect Mastercraftsman to become a multiple Group 1 winner, but you’ve got to respect Crowded House. Rainbow View always looked like being the one to beat, and she got her rating from winning the Fillies’ Mile (Gr1). I am totally confident John Gosden will do a suitable job, and I expect her to have a fantastic year.”
