KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
17 November 2012

The KZN Breeders Association held their annual awards on a misty evening at Bellwood Cottages on 17 November to honour the people and Thoroughbreds that have done the industry proud of the past season.

It was an evening that was very well-attended by prominent breeders, owners and trainers alike. It also included an event which brought much fun and amusement into the exciting atmosphere - the inaugural running of the ‘Donkey Derby’ which was won by Bradley McHardy of Quest For Success Pre-training.

Graeme Hawkins, the COO of Gold Circle, was the Master of Ceremonies for the event and the KZN Breeders Association Chairman, Koos de Klerk, gave both a welcoming and motivating speech regarding the exciting events that have occurred within the ambit of the KZN Breeders of the past year - as well as giving a hint of exciting prospects and plans for the year ahead.

“I want to extend a personal thank you to the board members of KZN Breeders Club and the effort that each of the members put in for the welfare of the club and breeders in KZN,” said Koos de Klerk. “Thank you too to the sponsors of the awards, it is greatly appreciated. We have had a number of initiatives that have borne fruit and will in future include the KZN Breeders Golf Day and KZN Breeders Million Mile Race Day, KZN Yearling Sales and the R1million race initiated for Vodacom Durban July day which is part of the initiative of our Triple Million Challenge. For a horse that can achieve the treble: winning the R1million race on Vodacom Durban July day, the next year’s Million Mile as a three-year-old and the following year as a four year old, a R1million bonus will be paid. Moving ahead, we will have another six races for R200,000 next year on the KZN Breeders Race Day (incorporating the Million Mile). Further details will be announced very soon - all of which will promote racing and breeding in KZN and we hope to see the results of that. We have already seen the success of the 2012 KZN Yearling Sale. Candiese Marnewick has been appointed as an admin manager and we hope to have her at all sales as well as to brand KZN horses, to promote KZN horses and to promote the Breeders Premium Scheme. We are also looking forward to some serious stallion purchases, starting with the announcement of Crusade.”

Congratulations must go to the winners which saw Dancewiththedevil crowned KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year for a second consecutive year. Breeder, owner and trainer St John Gray was on hand to recieve numerous awards which included Broodmare Of The Year for Emperor’s Dance who resides at Cathy and Jonathan Martin’s Hadlow Stud for St John Gray.

KZN Breeders Stallion Of The Year went to Kahal, owned by Shadwell Stud and now standing at Warwick and Karin Render’s Bush Hill Stud. Kahal was represented with a number of nominees on the evening, in particular he stood out as the sire of every nominee in the category of Outstanding Female Sprinter - won ultimately by Mannequin of Summerhill Stud. Bush Hill Stud took home awards for The Mouseketeer in the category of Outstanding Male Sprinter on behalf of breeder Dr Ian Heyns, as well as for the Bush Hill-stud raised Seal for Outstanding Male Stayer.

Summerhill Stud once again took home the award for Leading Breeder Of The Year and achieved wins in a total of five categories - with Extra Zero, Mannequin and Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje.

Keith Russon and Ian Todd of Backworth Stud won the award for Breeding Achievement. Backworth Stud had achieved an impressive 53% runners to winners ratio over the last racing season. Backworth’s Variometer, nominee for Outstanding Three-Year-Old Sprinter Female and Outstanding Three-Year-Old Filly had gone onto win the Gardenia Listed Handicap the evening before the awards in a very impressive fashion from a strong field of sprinting fillies that included winner of the Outstanding Female Sprinter categoey, Mannequin (bred by Summerhill Stud).

EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN GALLOPS
Summerhill Stud, Mooi River
Friday 19th October 2012

This is his third year riding the Breeze-ups. Bheki is a talented young rider and will be in line in a few years time to make the trip to the United States to ride for Becky Thomas’ famous Ready To Run operation. He is very passionate about young horses and loves reading about thoroughbred racing.

Bheki’s favourite filly and colt of this year’s Ready To Run sale is:

Lot 180: Morethangreat (Kahal x Choice) (F)

Ready To Run Sale Lot 180 Kahal - ChoiceLot 180: Morethangreat (Kahal x Choice)

A racey athletic filly, she is a similar type, but taller than Mannequin. She strides out well and we are happy with her work. By the sire of Bold Ellinore, Fisani, Checcetti and Emperor Napoleon. The dam now has 7 winners from 7 runners, and is sister to Rusty Pelican (6 wins including the Premium Stakes G2, 2nd in the Daily News 2000 G1 and 4th in the J&B Met G1) and Princely Heir (8 wins including 2nd in the Darley Arabian Handicap L). From the family of Royal Gitter (4 wins including the SA Nursery G1 and 4th in the Allan Robertson Fillies Championship G1) and Outcome (10 wins including the Garden Province Stakes G1).

Lot 60: Deckie Boy (Kahal x Mayo) (C)

Ready To Run Sale Lot 60 Deckie Boy Kahal - MayoLot 60: Deckie Boy (Kahal x Mayo)

A big strong colt. He has a long rangy action and should be your horse to win the classic races. He has a great nature and is easy to train. By Group 1 producing sire, Kahal. From the family of Dunmore West (7 wins including the Three Troikas Stakes G3), Royal Vintage (3 wins including the Umkhomazi Stakes G2 and 2nd in the UAE Derby G2), Sligo Bay (8 wins including 3rd in the Gilbey’s Stakes G1), Solutions (3 wins including the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery G3), Rockcastle (10 wins including the Racecourse Bookmakers Handicap L) and St Patrick (12 wins including the Champion Stakes G3).

Friday 19th October 2012

Sibusiso has been a part of our Ready to Run team for many years and loves breaking and riding the babies for the sale. He is a quiet rider and is not scared to ride anything you ask him to. Sibusiso comes from a long line of horsemen from the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and has been around thoroughbred horses from before he could walk.

Sibusiso’s favourite colt and filly for this year’s Ready To Run sale are:

Lot 64: Wysiwyg (Mullins Bay x Model K) (F)

Ready To Run Sale Lot 64 Mullins Bay - Model KLot 64: Wysiwyg (Mullins Bay x Model K)

A well balanced racey filly. She is a speedy sort that loves to work and reminds us a lot of her well performed sister! She is by Mullins Bay - Timeform rated 121. Sister to Mannequin (12 wins including the Banayana Handicap L and 2nd in the Lebelo sprint G3) and winner on her first two starts, Tinchy Stryder. The dam is sister to Kalami (winner including 2nd in the SA Fillies Classic G1). Her grand dam is Kal Sufi (4 wins including 3rd in the Cape Fillies Guineas G1). Dam 4 winners from 4 runners. From the family of Brave Voyager (3 wins including the SA Nursery Futurity Plate G1).

Lot 8: Chillingham (Mullins Bay x Frost Fairy) (C)

Ready To Run Sale Lot 8 Mullins Bay - Frost FairyLot 8: Chillingham (Mullins Bay x Frost Fairy)
