VICTORY AND THE COLLAR

Smanjemanje waywest goddess

“Kahal heads the National Stallion Log”

Smanjemanje was always a lurking talent. After all, he was the first, and only one of two, to triumph over Pierre Jourdan at three. But he’s been the victim of a well documented displacement of his palate, which has effectively cut off his wind supply at the most critical stages of his races.

A while back, with partners, Summerhill owned a smart filly by the name Paradise Alley, who battled with a similar affliction. On our travels around the world, we discovered a piece of equipment not irregularly used to fix the ailment in Australia and the United States, known as a Cornell Collar. It worked with Paradise Alley, and on Saturday, it certainly worked for Smanjemanje in the closing stages of the Victory Moon Stakes (Gr2). At a time when our man is often seen to flounder as the sticks come out in the finishing drive to the post, he found new resources of wind, and powered away from the field of high class performers including the past season’s champion three-year-old colt, The Apache. The son of Kahal has always promised to deliver a big one, and Saturday’s victory catapults his sire to the top of the national stallion log for the second time this season.

For the Summerhill sires, that wasn’t the end of the line, however. Last season’s Highveld Champion Juvenile, Waywest Goddess, couldn’t have been more impressive in the Gardenia Handicap (L). There were some quality speedsters in this one, but Louis Goosen’s premonition earlier in the week, turned out to be prophetic. She demolished them, literally. Given Extra Zero’s big turn against the colts when running for the R2million the week before, this was notice from Way West that he’s not ready to be forgotten.

WAY WEST : 25% OF R1,5 MILLION "CUP" FIELD

“WEST IS BEST”

David Hayes is widely regarded as one of Australia’s best racehorse trainers. There was a time though, when he took a sabbatical to Hong Kong, and left the affairs of his family’s famous Lindsay Park training establishment in the hands of his old team. The explosive precocity of a son of Danehill during his absence, very nearly brought him back from Hong Kong to prepare the youngster for his tilt at the world’s richest race for two year olds, the Golden Slipper.

That horse was Way West, whose record-smashing bolt of lightening in the celebrated Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr.3), suggested he would be a major factor when the bookmakers chalked up for the “Slipper”. It wasn’t only the race record that stirred the belief in the Hayes veins that this was a legitimate candidate, it wasn’t only the fact he surpassed the time of, Alinghi, one of the best juvenile fillies Australia had seen in years. Rather, it was the way he did it, overcoming a mid-race stumble, and getting up from the floor to find another gear and beat the Group One performers, Oratorio and Sanzero.

Way West already has a Highveld Juvenile Champion in Waywest Goddess; and the hugely promising Honolulu, whose talents were vividly expressed in a 2,5 length romp a week ago.

And as if they were withholding their efforts in an attempt to ensure the handicappers’ memories would be fresh at the point of selection of the field for the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, on consecutive days of this weekend, Bussell and Nobukhosi put up their hands with impressive performances at Turffontein and Scottsville.

While the judges will still have the final say, it’s conceivable right now that Way West will be represented by four individual runners in the fourth richest race in the land. That’s twenty five percent of the field if they all get a run, some kind of achievement for a first season sire. All of Louis Goosen, Paul Matchett, Dominic Zaki, Chips Pennells and Duncan Howells will be rubbing their hands in anticipation of bigger things.

That’s not all though, John Vos has a live candidate going to the track this week, in the form of Shee’s Gone West, a filly with two seconds from two starts to date, and almost certainly to be ripe for the winner’s box. Is it possible Way West could have 30% of the line-up?
