KZN BREEDERS' SERIES LOG UPDATE

KZN Breeders Race Day

KZN BREEDERS’ RACEDAY
Greyville, 30 June 2013

The KZN Breeders’ Race Day is taking place on the Sunday before the Vodacom Durban July at Greyville racecourse.

There will be seven races for KZN-bred racehorses with stakes of R200,000 each as well as the Million Mile, which will have a stake of R1million.

To date, there are in excess of 600 entries for the six races for three-year-olds and up and over 250 entries for the single juvenile two-year-old race. Supplementary entries open in April.

The current ‘three-year-old and up’ log-leader with 28 points is Summerhill-bred Rebel Queen by Kahal; a half-sister to stallion Rebel King and Uncle Tommy. Owned by Fito Englezakis and Rob Macnab, she is trained by Corne Spies and has had five wins (winning three in her last four starts) and seven places to date. Out of the mare Cousin Linda by Badger Land, she was a R280,000 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale graduate. Rebel Queen has a smart full-sister who recently entered training called Cousin Annie.

KZN BREEDERS RACE DAY
30 June 2013

Thoroughbred breeders in KwaZulu-Natal have initiated some unique marketing strategies over the years but under the umbrella of the KZN Breeders’ Club they have embarked on their most ambitious project yet with the announcement of the KZN Breeders Day to be held at Greyville on Sunday, June 30 2013.

Supporting the R1million KZN Breeders Mile will be six other races carrying a stake of R200,000 each but restricted to horses that qualify as KZN-breds. The meeting comes the weekend before the KZN Yearling Sale and will give added incentive to prospective buyers to invest in KZN-bred stock.

The six supporting races will be two races each over 1200m, 1600m and 1900m, one each for fillies and mares and colts and geldings respectively. The races will be open to all horses country-wide whose credentials meet the criteria of “KZN bred” as prescribed by the rules of the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme.

Horses need to be pre-entered to qualify for the races at a nominal fee of R50 plus VAT with first nominations closing on Friday, December 14, 2012. Early entry ensures that all horses nominated can be timeously checked to ensure that they qualify as KZN breds. However, there will be a further supplementary entry stage on Tuesday, April 30 2013 with a supplementary fee of R2,000 plus VAT.

To qualify for the races, points will be awarded in the months leading up to the racemeeting. Horses registered at first entry will receive a 4-point bonus but horses supplemented in April will not qualify for the bonus. Points for Maiden races will be awarded on a 4, 3, 2 basis for first, second and third. All other races, including Grade 1’s, will have points awarded from first to fifth on 8, 6, 4, 3, 1 basis. Points will be awarded regardless of the distance of the races and it will be up to the connections of the horses as to which races they nominate for. The intention is to publish a points log on a fortnightly basis.

This season, points will be earned from 1 January, 2013 but as from next year the initial entry stage will be the first day of the season, Thursday, 1 August 2013.

LADY LINDA

Linda Norval and Koos de Klerk - Anita Akal Award

KZN BREEDERS AWARDS
17 November 2012

There were many triumphs at the KZN Breeders Awards on Saturday evening, but from a purely selfish perspective, the one that delighted us most was the richly deserved recognition of Linda Norval as the Anita Akal awardee. Linda joined us shortly after the gates opened, and apart from a sabbatical stint (when she left us for another man!), she’s been a mainstay of our operation start to finish. In that time, she’s become a household name, not only at home, but for many abroad, who consider her the standard by which administrators are measured.

Here is an extract from Summerhill’s 2007/2008 Sires Brochure:

“A legend of our own time manages the Summerhill Farm office. This one was here the day the gates opened, when the office was just a part of the passage in the old farmhouse. Yes, the same farmhouse built by the Deputy Prime Minister, old Colonel Richards, the one that housed the Royal Family.

This is the daughter-in-law of the legend that bred every great horse that ever deserved a mention among the legends that made Hartford the greatest thoroughbred nursery of its era. She is the same legend that (last season) single-handedly sold something like 20% of all the stallion seasons traded in South Africa. She’s the voice behind the telephone the world has come to know as Linda Norval. Celebrity, champion, institution. Like the rest of the team, she’s come to appreciate the enormity of a third (now eighth) Breeder’s Championship. She doesn’t just appreciate it though: she’s one of those that made it, and like the rest of us, she’ll never forget it.

But she’s also one of those that’s never forgotten where we all come from. There are no short cuts to the top. Blood, sweat and sacrifice are the DNA of Champions, and the day after the celebrations end, she’ll be back at work. Ahead of time, as usual.”

In all, a Summerhill delegation of twenty-one celebrated six individual awards, while Kahal’s Stallion of the Year was achieved entirely on the back of a job done here. Hat’s off to St John Gray, whose outstanding performer Dancewiththedevil, walked away with the Horse of the Year for the second time.

Saturday evening was the last dance in another great year in the Summerhill story. It’s an acknowledgement of the value of a plan coming together, a revolutionary approach to farming, a unique strategy in the raising of our horses, a recognition of the value of investing in our people, and an understanding that without the support of one of the world’s most envied group of customers, none of it would be possible.

MIRACLE MAN

Admire Main

ADMIRE MAIN (JPN)

On Wednesday last, the KZN Breeders website published a story on the auspicious emergence of the first progeny our new stallion, Admire Main in Japan. (Click here to read the article.) If you’re anything of an international race-watcher, you will know just how competitive Japanese racing has become, to the degree that they’ve been scooping some of the big ones across the globe. In other words, if you can make it in Japan these days, you can make it anywhere.

While Admire Main raised hopes of a glittering three-year-old career with a smashing debut over seven furlongs at two, his aptitude for longer distances and his pedigree suggested that anything we gleaned from his own stock at two, would be something of a Christmas gift. And the way he’s going, it looks like Santa Claus’ generosity this year will have few bounds: he may just be the reason why 2012 will not be “Twenty Twelve”, as the Mayan calendar suggests. Thus far, his record reads 11 runners, 4 winners (from 800m to 1700m,) and as many again in the money.

The integrity of the breed in South Africa demands a balanced sprinkling in aptitudes among our stallions. Somehow, our race organisers got the mix upside down, with the bulk of the prize money for those that excel at 2000m and beyond, against a programme for our younger horses which is loaded in favour of the swiftest between 1200m and 1600m. Clearly, if you want to win the big ones, you need to be on a horse that will go every inch of the way, and that calls for a liberal measure of both stamina and class. Admire Main had both in loads, and he has the added advantage of his genetic uniqueness. Australia has its own special brand of the Halo male line in More Than Ready, and while he’s a stallion of great individual brilliance, More Than Ready’s influence on the breed is never likely to match that of Sunday Silence. We’re lucky at Summerhill to have both strains, one through Traffic Guard (More Than Ready’s best-performed European son) and Sunday Silence’s through Admire Main.

If you want to be “something else”, look for something else.
