CHAMP DE MARS : NOW FOR SOME GENUINE FUN...

Champ de Mars

CHAMP DE MARS
Port Louis, Mauritius

We’ve always maintained if you haven’t raced at the Champ de Mars, there’s something missing in your life. The Mauritius Turf Club’s tight 1400m circuit in the heart of the capital, Port Louis, is as intimate a racing venue as you’ll find, and most weekends, its Mediterranean-style facilities are packed to the rafters. Founded in 1812, the Southern Hemisphere’s oldest turf club boasts five marquee meetings a year, none bigger than this weekend’s international jockey’s clash. Though it doesn’t take a classic or an international event to excite the locals, drawing them to the track week after week.

The city bowl atmosphere and the “up close and personal” nature of the contest brings a gladiatorial quality to days like this, something akin to the “rumble in the jungle” Ali vs Frazier, or the epic bout between Verus and Priscus at the opening of the Flavian amphitheatre. Close your eyes and think of a gathering of some of the world’s best jockeys; Frankie Dettori, Stephanie Pasquier, Olivier Peslier, Corey Brown, Imran Chisty, William Buick, Glen Hatt, Robbie Burke, Karl Neisius, Rye Joorawon, Karis Teetan and Jeannot Bardottier, and you have all the ingredients for a no-holds-barred spectacular.

Mauritius is South Africa’s biggest horse export market, and with the growing prosperity of the local economy, Mauritians are not shy to put their money down. This Indian Ocean island off the East coast of Africa has been largely immune from the ravages of a tattered financial world, astute government strategies having targeted specific areas in the manufacturing and financial services which have elevated many of its businesses beyond the reach of the turmoil that has embraced us.

The result is, Mauritians are intrepid investors when it comes to decent horse, if that’s what it takes for one rich man to beat another on big days like these. South Africa’s handicapping system is apt to penalise horses to a point which makes them uncompetitive at home, and Mauritians are only too happy to place their hands on these gems, and give them a second lease on life. On Saturday, there’ll be any number of South African Group One performers taking to the course, stalwarts with a new “kick”, ready to take on the best again on a more level playing field. It’s a case of the Mauritians exploiting the gaps in a flawed system. Good luck to them.

THUNDER KEY
DIADEM STAKES (GRADE 2) 2009

Saturday saw lightening strike at Kenilworth when the son of Muhtafal, Thunder Key, stormed home to steal victory in the Grade 2 Diadem Stakes over 1200m.

A most formidable field of big name performers, including Kapil, Villandry, Warm White Night, Gaultier and Blue Tiger to mention but a few, took their places in the starting gates. But it was the Glen Kotzen-trained 6-year-old speedster, under jockey Karis Teetan, who ignited the afterburners to win by a half length from Blue Tiger with Dance With Al trailing a further length and a quarter.

(Please watch the video above for all the race action and post-race interviews.)

Thunder Key had been knocking on the door in 2009 season with runner-up placings in the Southeatser Sprint (L), Golden Horse Casino Sprint (Gr1) and Umngeni Handicap (L).

Congratulations to trainer Glen Kotzen, owner Jean Van Heerden and Thunder Key’s breeder Cecil Baitz.

ARABIAN MIST BLOWS THEM AWAY IN DEFY MERCHANTS

ARABIAN MIST

Whilst the name Arabian Mist may not be synonymous with “Sprint Sensation” quite yet, those with memories will recall the exploits of his half-brother, six-time Equus Awards finalist and three-time Champion, Nhlavini, who was still contesting (and winning) at Group One level well into his ninth season.

Racingweb reports that Arabian Mist, the five-year-old son of Muhtafal out of Valley Mist, is not nearly as famous as his illustrious half-brother Nhlavini, who retired as South Africa’s grand sprinting star in 2006, but he’s one cracking sprinter himself. The Gary Alexander-trained gelding was reminiscent of Nhlavini in the way he quickly put daylight between himself and his rivals when taking a decisive victory in Saturday’s R450,000 Grade 2 Defy Merchants over 1200m at Turffontein.

Arabian Mist tracked Red Flyer and Carbon Leader in the early stages of the race with Cool Spender and Opening Night in hot pursuit. But the outcome was decided when apprentice Karis Teetan switched Arabian Mist to the inside in the final 200m. He got right up the leaders and the drew away without much fuss to win by over two lengths going away.

“I kept him covered for as long as possible as Mr Alexander told me,” said Karis Teetan.

Gary Alexander Racing Stables say that what makes the performance that much more impressive is that Arabian Mist had the better of the likes of Red Flyer, winner of the Umgeni Handicap, and Sharks Bay, runner-up in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint and winner of the Grade 2 Post Merchants, over six lengths behind him.

With Arabian Mist now notching up his seventh victory, and with a good season or two ahead, he may well also get on the Grade 1 Roll before he retires… remember Champion Nhlavini won 15 races including several Grade 1 sprints.

Congratulations to owners Mrs Jo Gardner and Messrs Myron Berzack, Bruce Gardner, Chris Gerber, Greg Sadie and Leon van Rooyen.
