Local and foreign buyers combine forces in record breaking sale

noma indiaSales topper: the filly NOMA INDIA (Kahal x Bridal Paths) who sold to trainer Michael Azzie for R380,000‘Hyperbolic growth” was how a delighted Bloodstock South Africa’s Marketing Manager, Byron Kennedy, summed up today’s Emperor’s Palace Ready to Run sale in Johannesburg. Defying the recent interest rate increase and a softening rand, this year’s sales aggregate grew an astonishing 49% to reach R11.027m (up from R7.359m in 2005) with the average up an equally staggering 53% to R100,245 (up from R65,705 in 2005).

“Clearly the incentive of next year’s Sweepstakes played its part in the massive growth of this year’s sale,” Byron said just moments after the conclusion of the sale. “We can only hope the momentum will continue into next year and other breeders will support the concept. We hope to crack at least 250 entries next time round”.

Local trainer Mike Azzie signed for the top priced lot - a filly called NOMA INDIA - who sold for a record price of R380,000. A daughter of the exciting young Machiavellian sire Kahal, the filly had been the subject of intense interest after a strong breezing session and during pre-sale inspections.

Champion international trainer Mike de Kock was the successful bidder for the second priced lot, the well admired colt ART OF WAR (lot 81) who sold for R360,00. The colt was also sired by Kahal.

“Foreign buyers played a vital part in this year’s sale,” said Mick Goss, CEO of Summerhill Stud, the largest consignor for this year’s sale. “Five horses have been sold to Dubai-based interests, four to Hong Kong, two to Singapore, and one to Australia. The local market also embraced this market with their heart and soul. Everyone wants to be part of this race next year. The concept of the sponsored race has drawn immense interest and added great value to the sale. Bloodstock South Africa are predicting 250 entries for next year and we are proposing a R1,000,000 stake as well.”

Chad Cook, former Group Racing Editor of the Independent Newspapers, said “This was a magnificent sale with quality horses bought at prices that make the Emperors Palace Sweepstakes a bonus that is seldom found in sales arenas of South Africa. The percentages for purchasing a qualifying horse are brilliant”

Ready to Run Manager at Summerhill Stud, Tarryn Liebenberg, was equally delighted with this afternoon’s results. “The sale well and truly exceeded expectations,” she said. “We were extremely happy with the performance of the Kahals and the Deep Sleeps. Their prices reflected their performances on the track two weeks ago.”

A weekend of black type racing

Race 6 at Fairview on Friday - The R70,000 Greenbushes Sprint - sees three Ready to Race graduates going head to head. 18-time winner BRIGADIER PARKER takes on the winner of seven including the 2005 Group One Mercury Sprint winner DISAPPEAR and Champion Eastern Cape Three Year Old HEAR THE DRUMS. All three horses are Summerhill bred.

At Kenilworth on Saturday the R85,000 Lake Coniston MR 100 Handicap sees the appearance of last start graded stakes winner MAJESTIC SUN (Ready to Run graduate). The R150,000 Gr 2 Odessa Stud Fillies Stakes over 1400m sees a daughter of Muhtafal - PERSIAN LEGACY - take her place.

At Newmarket on Saturday evening the feature race is the R500,000 Gr 2 Gauteng Charity Mile November Handicap. The field of 16 sees 4 Summerhill connected horses: the Summerhill bred Ready to Run filly BOLD ELLINORE - Winner of the KZN Fillies Guineas. (pr. Gr. 1) defeating six Group One winners in the process. She also ran second in the Garden Province Stakes (Gr. 1) and was stakes placed in her first appearance this season; another Ready to Run graduate Talahatchie - winner of the Gr. 1 Premiers Champion Juvenile Stakes in 2005; the Summerhill bred and Team Valor owned Carnadore, and graded stakes winner RIVER PLATE (whose half brother  - REGAL RUNNER sells on Sunday at the Ready to Run sale).

In the Listed Lexmark Starling Stakes over 1300m, the Summerhill bred daughter of Kahal - LONDON BALLET - steps up to stakes class. Her full sister - CAPE TANGO - whose gallop Friday week ago earned her the tag of ” absolute machine” - will also sell this weekend.

In the Gr 3 Graham Beck Stakes (also over 1300m) the very exciting Mike de Kock galloper KHEBRAAT (Kahal) makes his first start since June. Khebraat won his first start by 1.25 lengths (going away) and the stable holds him in high regard.

Race 8 - the Listed CT Brand Handicap over 1000m - sees the 9-time winner as a three year old (including two Group One performances) - FANYANA - step up the mark. Fanyana (a Ready to Run graduate) defeated 3 Group 1 performers when carrying 60.5 kgs to victory at Newmarket two weeks ago. Whilst not yet a graded stakes winner he carries top weight of 61.5 kilos and concedes 3.5 kilos to the Gr 1 winner (by Muhtafal) LET’S ROCK ‘N ROLL.  Another son of Muhtafal - GYPSEY CARAVAN - will also face the starter. A half sister to FANYANA is part of this year’s Ready to Run draft. Tipped as one of the sales toppers, she sells as Lot 109.

On Sunday the R125,000 KZN Betting World KZN Guineas Trial over 1600m at Clairwood showcases the brilliant Kahal juvenile trained by Mike de Kock - EMPEROR NAPOLEON (2-time winner by a combined margin of 5 lengths from just 4 starts and currently on his hat trick). Emperor Napoleon is a full brother to Bold Ellinore (Gr 2 winner; Gr 1 placed) . ROSE WINDOW (last year’s top priced Ready to Run graduate at R280,000) is also pursuing a hat trick after winning his last 2 starts by a combined margin of 5.5 lengths. His brother - ILLUSIONIST - a strong well conformed son of National Emblem sells as Lot 39 on Sunday). Also in the race is Infinite Spirit - a very swift son of Muhtafal who ran well during the Winter in Durban (including a 3rd to Fearless in the R500,000 Gr 1 Golden Horseshoe and a 4th to Kildonan in the R500,000 Gr 1 Premiers Champions Stakes on All Stars Day). In 6 starts last season he was never out of the prize money.

Ready to Race Diary: Live from Jhb Day 2

born to run logoMick, Tim, Tarryn and myself dodged the morning drizzle and sat down to choose our top 20 horses from this year’s Draft as Ingrid and Marlene headed off to find the Mall and food and phone cards for the troops.

Rules were as follows: The 20 horses had to be the ones that will be the best race performers (not necessarily the top priced lots), you were allowed to inspect the horses in person, watch the Gallops on the TV or website, and analyze pedigrees. You weren’t allowed to discuss your thoughts with anyone else or look at anyone else’s list.

The following 8 horses appeared on each of the 4 lists:

Lecture x Ridge Furlong
Muhtafal x Heat Machine
Rambo Dancer x Blue
Kahal x Bridal Paths
Rambo Dancer x Aquatic Thrill
Kahal x Derniere Dance
Albarahin x Fidelity Bond
Woodborough x Sadlers Belle

The following 7 horses appeared on 3 out of 4 lists:

Muhtafal x Ring the Changes
Deep Sleep x Amusing
Jallad x Feather Bed
Albarahin x Veritas
Kahal x Citidancer
Rambo Dancer x Forest Edge
Deep Sleep x Dancing Firelight

The following 4 horses appeared on 2 out of the 4 lists:

Kahal x Hardened Sands
London News x Hill of Plenty
Kahal x Cariad
National Emblem x Rose North

Between that the grooms filled water buckets and feeders, mucked out stables and groomed horses, we welcomed prospective buyers, waited for the new fridge to be delivered, perused the Dubai Racing Carnival’s 2007 Programme, and made our choices for this weekend’s Breeders Cup races. No-one could remember the name of the last 6 horses to win the Dubai World Cup. We all got a bit stuck on 2002. The cricket again featured - South Africa played the West Indies in the semi final. Australia gave New Zealand a caning yesterday.

Favorite jelly bean flavours (as on mornings when the Yard is quiet such things become important) Tarryn - red, Katrina - white, and Tim … well, he wasn’t sure. Mick made us all tea.

Summerhill Ready to Run quinella in Java Handicap

Kahal added another stakes winner to his record this afternoon, siring the winner of the feature race at Turffontein, the Java Handicap [Listed] over 2200m. BHEKINKOSI (by Kahal x Amabokoboko by Sunny North) zoomed up the outside to snare victory on the line from OPTIMA MAXIMO (another Summerhill bred - this time by National Emblem) who had led from the start and looked to have the outcome under control at the 200m mark. Kahal also sired the winner of the Dippin Blu Racing Stables Novice Flate (f & m) at Fairview yesterday - Sheer Brilliance. Another Summerhill bred - Hard to Get (by Fard x Zintonga) also ran 4th in yesterday’s Feature Race at Fairview  - The Racing Association Stakes [Listed] over 1600m.

Of note, both Bhekinkosi and Optima Maximo are Ready to Race graduates (2003 RTR sale [R65,000 to Gary Alexander] and 2004 RTR [R150k to Charles Laird] respectively).

It was the day for the Ready to Run horses - a Programme graduate (bred by Messrs M G Wishart and L Cirgiliano) by the name of Pegasus Emblem (by National Emblem x Above the Waves) also winning the R74,590 DATCANTRE Motors Advance Plate (1000m) at Scotsville  just 20 minutes later.
