NHLAVINI : THE PASSING OF A LEGEND

Nhlavini

NHLAVINI (SAF)
(National Emblem (SAF) - Valley Mist (SAF)

The frenetics surrounding the Cape Premier Yearling Sale and the J&B Met, and the speed at which the social goings-on were taking place, made us oblivious to the fact that the World Economic Forum was in full swing in Davos. Sadly, and significantly for us, we even missed the death in relative infancy, of our ageless champion, Nhlavini. If you’re chalking up the great names of those that grew up here, he’d be up there with the best : we speak of St Pauls, Mowgli, Sentinel, Magic Mirror, Panjandrum, Dancing Duel, Imperial Despatch, Spook and Diesel, Pick Six, Igugu, Pierre Jourdan, Rebel King and Imbongi.

For that matter, the Markus and Ingrid Jooste’s colour bearer would’ve ranked with best anywhere. Apart from Pocket Power, he must be the only horse to have lined up six times for an Equus Award, where he walked away with the championship on three occasions as the nation’s leading sprinter, the last time at eight years of age. The Brits will tell you that the Zulus are feared for their exploits in battle, and Nhlavini (Zulu for “playboy”), would stand right alongside the warrior kings, Shaka and Cetewayo, as a racehorse.

A championship class campaigner by any standards, he got more than he would’ve anywhere else in the hands of Charles Sydney Laird. We use his name to emphasise his ancestory, as a clue to the expertise that made Nhlavini what he was. There was a sentimental attachment to the progeny of National Emblem in general in the Laird family, but nowhere was it stronger than it was with Nhlavini. Religiously, at the end of his winter campaigns in KwaZulu Natal, his trainer sent him home to his birthplace, where he occupied the sacred paddock which in the 60s, housed the multiple champion sire, Masham, in the shadow of the great eucalypts of Hartford House.

Rested, the brave soldier always returned to the fray, always faithful, always true. This was especially so in his latter years, when it seemed his heart was willing but his limbs could take no more. His master was always masterful, and it was a measure of his great respect for the great horse that in his latter years, there were only two races on the official calendar. The Diadem Stakes and the Cape Flying Championship, at six, seven and eight. His three consecutive Diadems and two Flying Championships (some still say three) tell us the respect was mutual. His harvest was three million and more.

His father’s tally at Summerhill alone included some fifteen Stakes winners, among a litany of Black type scorers, the best of them (Nhlavini, Rebel King, Carnadore, all champions, Decorated Hero, Princely Heir and Lotti), trained by Charles Laird, while top-liners, Fez (Gr1), Royal Emblem (Gr1) and Thekkady, were also inmates of our paddocks carrying the National Emblem hip- sticker on their backsides.

The Tsogo Sun Maverick was won impressively by the Charles Laird-trained Australian-bred Delago Deluxe, considering he is looking for further than this trip.

Both Laird and owners Markus and Ingrid Jooste gained a one-two as Tennessee Strategy stayed on well for second after showing pace throughout. Jockey Anton Marcus had to really get to work on Delago Deluxe at about the 400m mark, but the further they went the better he got and he won by 2,25 lengths. The horse he had touched off in the SA Nursery, Midnight Serenade, finished third ahead of Storm Bringer and Hard Rock.

Laird has now won this race four times and has gained three runner up spots. John Koster and Grant Knowles of Klawervlei Stud are already excited about Delago Deluxe’s stallion potential as he will become the only son of Encosta De Lago (AUS) standing in South Africa. “His name was on the stallion door as they came through the 200m,” quipped Knowles. Delago Deluxe has a tremendous female line and is in-bred to a top class mare called Rolls.

DUBAI OR JOBURG, EITHER WAY IT'S DE KOCK

GAUTENG COLTS AND FILLIES GUINEAS
Turffontein, 26 February 2011

The unstoppable Mike de Kock train demolishing everything in its way in Dubai, erupts back into action at Turffontein Saturday with the running of the Gauteng Colts and Fillies Guineas. Followers of these columns will recall that Summerhill-breds have made the colt’s guineas something of a monopoly in the past two seasons, with first Imbongi taking the 2009 version, and Pierre Jourdan leading Havasha in a one-two last year. Astonishingly, the 2010 Fillies Guineas fell to yet another Summerhill Ready To Run graduate in Fisani on the same day, de Kock having been associated with three of the four protagonists, Imbongi, Havasha and Fisani.

In the Fillies guineas on Saturday, he has another very powerful hand in the R1million graduate of the Summerhill draft at the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, in Igugu, an extremely talented daughter of the world’s best stallion of 2010, Galileo. Her principal opposition comes from another yard which has known great success over the years through its association with Summerhill in the likes of champions Nhlavini and Rebel King. Charles Laird saddles the outstanding Hollywoodboulevard for Markus and Ingrid Jooste, and as the winner of her last four in a row, including a victory over Igugu in the R1,5 million Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, this Ready To Run product is likely to make things decidedly tough for the de Kock inmate. While we’ve made this out to be something of a two-way struggle, (and it would be surprising if it wasn’t), the group one winning daughter of Europe’s new sire sensation, Dubawi, the Sean Tarry-trained Happy Archer is already a Group One winner, while Without Malice and Welwitschia could make something of a race of it.

In the Colts Guineas, Summerhill, for the first time in some years, is without representation, but once again, it looks like a de Kock/Laird battle for the ages. Laird goes in singularly with Galileo’s Destiny, while de Kock’s punch will come from the Rock Of Gibraltar colt, Perana, and the two in-form South Africans, Kavanagh and Link Man.
