INGLIS : A FAR CRY FROM ENGLAND

INGLIS MELBOURNE PREMIER YEARLING SALE 2010

A couple of years ago, two of the world’s best known horse auction houses teamed up in a cross shareholding arrangement in their respective businesses. Tattersalls in England was founded as long ago as 1766 by Richard Tattersall, who staked his claim to a prime piece of real estate in the heart of what was to become racing’s headquarters, in Newmarket, England, which had been proclaimed thus by Charles II, ruling monarch of the time.

The Inglis family were Scots migrants to Australia in as 1867, and they too, staked their claim to what has become one of that country’s landmark horse auction sites, based at the Australian version of Newmarket, on the doorstep of Royal Randwick racecourse in Sydney.

The contrast in the racing economies of England and Australia right now is as stark as the contrasting styles of the auctioneers of these two grand institutions, and last week in Melbourne we were treated to a display of some of the finest bantering in the world. You’d be tempted to suggest that it was the auctioneers that lifted the sale some 35% beyond last year, but we’d need to remember that these self-same men were on the podium at the 2009 version as well, so you’d have to give credit for the years result to an already bubbling Australian economy.

Those that know the Aussies on the sports fields, know their spirit, and that when their tails are up, they’re hard to stop. It was like that in Melbourne this last week, where anything decent posted healthy gains over last year’s business. The clearance rate (79%) could’ve been better, though, as some vendors were clearly carried away with the euphoria of what people are prepared to pay for their moment of glory.

The Summerhill team has become a regular “shopper” at the Premier Sale, and we’ve seen a leapfrogging in the quality of the catalogue over the past few years. This was the venue which produced Cape Guineas (Gr.1) hero, Le Drakkar, two years go, and it was good to see the Form Organisation and Hassan Adams hard at work upholding South Africa’s reputation for big spending. Jehan Malherbe and his sidekick, Dean Kannemeyer, were twice beaten on the top colt and the top filly (at Aus$400 000), but they probably found better value shopping in the $200 000 range.

Our team were probably fortunate in securing three outstanding prospects, for the variety and flair they will provide when they come under the hammer at November’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.

The Aussies know how to look after their customers better than any nation on earth, and it’s a tribute to John Messara’s foresight that he’s managed to turn Aushorse, the commercial branch of their Thoroughbred Breeders Association, into a wallet- wrenching machine which compels you to spend your money.

Aushorse is run by erstwhile Federal Minister of Agriculture, Peter McGauran, and its “public” face, Rowena Smith, a recent visitor to Summerhill, alongside Inglis’ indefatigable Simon Vivian and never-give-up Bloodstocker, Paul Guy.

THE VALUE OF FRIENDS AND SOME POWERFUL PARALLELS

OF DUAL GUINEAS PRECEDENTS AND GREAT SENSATIONS

Five Olympic gold medals is the all-time record of Ian “Thorpedo” Thorpe of Australia. Sitting with him at breakfast this morning before leaving for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne, I couldn’t help thinking how close Pierre Jourdan’s 5 wins from 6 starts comes to emulating this great Olympian’s own staggering achievement. And I couldn’t, as a one-time sportsman myself, help thinking how perfectly suited this man would be to racehorse ownership. That he declined the invitation this morning, doesn’t mean he’ll always be beyond reach. There’s always breakfast tomorrow!

The one thing this game does is reach to the inner sanctums of most people’s hearts, and there are very few who can claim exemption. Even in his frenetic routine, His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho, found time to call and congratulate the Summerhill Team on its dual Guineas victory. We don’t know whether there is a precedent for such a double in history, but it certainly ranks with the best sensations known to man.

TURFFONTEIN RACECOURSE
28 FEBRUARY 2010

mick gossMick GossOn the self same weekend in 2008, I was startled out of deep slumber by the kind of jolt none of us understand. In Australia for the Melbourne sale, my time zone had me 9 hours ahead of South Africa, and it was a “Guineas” premonition that sat me up. Affiliate to Sky Channel revealed the last moments of the Gauteng Guineas, and voila! Imbongi surged to the front in that instant, and it was over in strides.

Last night (back in Melbourne again) it was an SMS from my daughter Bronwyn, that raised the alarm. We all knew we had a big hand with Pierre Jourdan in the Colts version, but at 1.15am this was a bit earlier than we expected, Fisani it was, of six Mike de Kock entries in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas, who’d repelled the thrust of the “Aussie”, Generous Aura, to take the R500k event with a courageous rally, providing His Highness Sheikh Mohammed with his third Classic winner inside of a fortnight (following Musir and Raihana) in the UAE.

No Red Bull required to keep the eyelids open for the R1 million colts edition, and this time, Pierre Jourdan was clinical, getting away from his erstwhile Summerhill paddockmate, Havasha, by three, and destroying the hopes of Australia again as compatriots Galileo’s Galaxy and Flying Tristram struggled on for the minor money. It’s always good taking on the boys from Down Under, but even better when you’re in your own backyard.

This was a helluva result for Summerhill in general, and for the Emperors Palace Ready To Run in particular. The first three protagonists home in the R1,5 million race by that name, was the Fillies Guineas first, and first and second in the Colts Guineas. No matter your politics, this was a shattering blow to those that would deny the nation’s fourth richest race, its Black type status any longer. Only a bigot could resist henceforth, and we must hope that the powers that manage these things, will finally acknowledge the need to join the rest of the world, and give the race the recognition it deserves.

South Africans active at Premier Yearling Sale

megan romeynMegan RomeynBucking the international financial chaos that has dominated world markets over the past week, the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale has once again proved that thoroughbred investments are viable financial commodities in these uncertain times.

Day one of the sale ended with Champion sire Encosta de Lago proving to be the top seller as his colt out of the unraced Acquisito (Zeditave), a half-sister to the Stakes winning Make Me A Miracle, fetched the top price of $170,000 for Blue Gum Farm.

As expected Exceed And Excel set the best sire’s average with three yearlings returning an average of $120,000. There was considerable interest in his offspring, and the recent victory Reward For Effort in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr.1) certainly helped his cause. Another stallion who has attracted good interest is Commands, whose yearlings have averaged $85,417.

South Africans have been active at the sale, with Mike Bass, trainer of Pocket Power, securing a colt for $50,000 by the son of Redoute’s Choice, Not A Single Doubt, out of Park Heiress (Sadler’s Wells). Heritage Bloodstock snapped up a filly by sire of the sale, Exceed And Excel, out of Lulworth Cove (In The Wings) for $165,000 and a colt by General Nediym out of Belle’s Best (King’s Best) for $50,000.

Day two yielded a new sale topper with the hammer finally dropping at $365,000 for a Redoute’s Choice colt boasting an impeccable pedigree. The colt is out of Celtic Reign (Woodman), a half sister to tripple Melbourne Cup winner and two time Australian Horse Of The Year Makybe Diva.

Meanwhile the boss and Kerry have been kept busy vetting the vast number of lots on offer with a few astute purchases, I’m sure. We will keep you updated as the information trickles in.
