INGLIS EASTER YEARLING SALE
10 to 12 April 2012

After a string of mild and sunny days, Tuesday’s opening session of the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale at the Newmarket complex in Sydney was greeted by blustery winds and considerably cooler temperatures. Despite the marked reversal in weather, the day’s action proved much more consistent with a son of hot sire Fastnet Rock (Aus) realizing a session topping A$1 million ($1,026,074) from Coolmore. Flanked by a large group of associates in addition to advisors Demi O’Byrne and James Bester, Coolmore’s Tom Magnier handled the bidding duties. “We thought this horse was the best horse in the sale,” confirmed Magnier. “James and Demi were very keen on him. The whole team really liked him, so we are very keen to get those very good Fastnet Rocks.”

2012 MELBOURNE PREMIER SALE CONCLUDES

MELBOURNE PREMIER YEARLING SALE
27 February - 1 March 2012

Trade slowed predictably on the fourth and final day of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale at Oaklands on Thursday, writes Darryl Sherer. Trainer Peter Moody purchased the day’s top two lots, both Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold eligible colts and consigned by Makybe.

The most expensive of the pair was a $125,000 colt by Street Hero (Street Cry) out of Quiet Name (Lot 659), a daughter of Danehill (Danzig). A half-brother to three winners, including this season’s Brisbane juvenile winner Pure Whisper (Purrealist), the attractive August foal hails from a deep imported pedigree. His dam is a three-quarter sister to the French Listed winner No Dream (Anabaa), while his granddam Quiet Dream is by the Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and a half-sister to the Grade One winner Dare And Go (Alydar) and Go Deputy (Deputy Minister).

“He’s a good looking colt, well prepared, just a nice horse,” Moody said.

His other purchase was $115,000 for Lot 688, a colt by Purrealist (Tale Of The Cat) from Smytzer’s Thunder (Thunder Gulch) and a half-brother to Melbourne winner Lucky Thunder (Lucky Owners), who was also placed in the Australian Guineas (Gr1, 1600m).

A further $2.9 million was generated from 102 lots sold yesterday, bringing the four day gross to $34.8million. The Premier II section of the catalogue averaged $28,451 with a median of $22,500.

“Things slowed up today but that is to be expected and the good lots have sold well, very well in my opinion,” Inglis’s Peter Heagney said at sale end. “As in sales around the world the trend continues with the good types selling very well and for those lots that do not meet market expectation then it is tough going. This sale has shown that the right type will sell for its market value and, in many cases this week, ahead of that. There are a lot of positives to take out of the week, there has been a big presence from South Africa and they have purchased some 20 lots and were underbidders on several more, including the top-priced horse in the sale. We have had buyers from Hong Kong, Singapore and a great representation from Victorian trainers and from interstate, West Australia in particular. We have been very pleased with so much positive feedback from vendors and buyers alike over the past four days and look forward to taking the momentum of the yearling sale through to tomorrow’s Select Racehorse Sale.”

MELBOURNE PREMIER YEARLING SALE
27 February - 1 March 2012

Led by a big contingent of South Africans, the international buying bench has been very strong during the opening two sessions of the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Internationals splurged $1,426,000 on 19 lots during the first session and yesterday secured another 25 lots for $1,604,000, bringing the sale total for internationals to $3,030,000.

In addition to South Africa, other countries to have success at Premier so far have been Hong Kong, Ireland, new Zealand, Korea, Singapore and Japan.

Obviously buoyed by the success of their current flagbearer Igugu, a $65,000 purchase out of the Oaklands ring sold in South Africa by Summerhill Stud on the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, that country has had a huge presence during the opening two sessions.

Buyers from South Africa to date have included Heritage Bloodstock, World Wide Bloodstock, Livestock Traders, Summerhill Sales, Form Bloodstock and Mayfair Speculators, who added to Encosta De Lago, Danehill Dancer and Hussonet colts bought on day 1 with a $140,000 Street Sense colt yesterday.

Heritage Bloodstock secured a Flying Spur colt and Stratum filly yesterday, while Form Bloodstock picked up a Hussonet filly.

World Wide Bloodstock went to $45,000 for a Duke Of Marmalade colt on day 2 after securing a Tale Of The Cat filly during the opening session.

Korean Bloodstock are a welcome presence at this year’s sale and yesterday their purchases included a Reset filly and colts by Elvstroem and Mutawaajid.

Renowned international buyer Demi O’Byrne has made his way to Oaklands this year and on day one he went to $100,000 to secure a colt by Coolmore stallion Duke Of Marmalade.

On day two Demi O’Byrne secured the top lot (lot 408) for the sale, a Fastnet Rock colt out of Bellevue Lady. This is a record price for the Premier sale at $500,000 and a positive finish to the day.

Fellow Irishman Dermot Farrington was the successful bidder on a bargain $22,500 Encosta De Lago filly yesterday. New Zealand buyers included Dean Hawthorne, Beamish Bloodstock, Lyndhurst Farm, Mark Treweek, Tony Pike, Warren Bolton and Paul Willetts.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club picked up a not A Single Doubt colt for $120,000 yesterday, while Kin Shan Yeung led the Hong Kong charge on day one with $200,000 for a Bernardini colt.

STREET SENSE ON FIRE

STREET SENSE (USA)
Street Cry (Ire) - Bedazzle (USA)

The two most popular young stallions at the Inglis Easter Sale in Sydney, were Street Sense and Bernardini, according to Inglis Managing Director, Mark Webster. Yesterday, a colt from the first crop of Street Sense, the only horse in American history to complete the Breeders Cup Juvenile/Kentucky Derby double, topped the second session at $320,000 (R2,24million). At the other end of the world, at the Keeneland Breeze Up Sale in Kentucky, two of his first Northern Hemisphere-bred juveniles set the cinders alight with bullet gallops before an expectant crowd. At 9,45 seconds, a filly (Lot 150) and a colt (Lot 147), were the joint fastest on the day, and can be expected to wind up among the sale toppers.

We’ve banged on a bit about it, but once more for good measure. The only son of Street Sense to be offered in South Africa is Lot 552, in the Summerhill draft at the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale 15 - 17 April, a colt with a striking resemblance to his accomplished father.

The World is Watching.

Eamonn Cullen
(Heather Morkel/Barun Patro)

It’s always interesting (and often flattering) to know that, at the southernmost tip of what the civilized world calls the “Darkest Continent”, there’s something which may intrigue those in supposedly more civilized climes. We’ve noticed from those that visit our website, that auction companies of the eminence of Keeneland in the United States, Inglis and Magic Millions in Australia and Irish Thoroughbred Marketing (obviously in Ireland), are regular visitors, curious as to how we go about marketing the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale.

One of the principal cogs in the Irish wheel, Marketing Manager Eamonn Cullen, confessed yesterday that he visits us twice a week for his “fix” on what we’re up to, and he’s been genuinely generous in his admiration.

While we think we’re making a fair job of it, there are always new depths to plumb and new lessons to be learnt, and if any of our readers have any ideas for us, we’d be more than delighted to hear from you.
