OF DUAL GUINEAS PRECEDENTS AND GREAT SENSATIONS
Five Olympic gold medals is the all-time record of Ian “Thorpedo” Thorpe of Australia. Sitting with him at breakfast this morning before leaving for the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne, I couldn’t help thinking how close Pierre Jourdan’s 5 wins from 6 starts comes to emulating this great Olympian’s own staggering achievement. And I couldn’t, as a one-time sportsman myself, help thinking how perfectly suited this man would be to racehorse ownership. That he declined the invitation this morning, doesn’t mean he’ll always be beyond reach. There’s always breakfast tomorrow!
The one thing this game does is reach to the inner sanctums of most people’s hearts, and there are very few who can claim exemption. Even in his frenetic routine, His Majesty King Letsie III of Lesotho, found time to call and congratulate the Summerhill Team on its dual Guineas victory. We don’t know whether there is a precedent for such a double in history, but it certainly ranks with the best sensations known to man.
