PERFECT PREP FOR SMANJEMANJE AHEAD OF SUMMER CUP

Smanjemanje, who came within a hair’s breadth of causing one of the biggest upsets in Vodacom Durban July history earlier this year, looks to have been given another perfect preparation by trainer Tyrone Zackey for Saturday’s Grade 1 R2 Million Sansui Summer Cup.

“I personally think he’s one of the big runners in the race and the price is right,” said Zackey, who pointed out that he always ran his best races at long odds. He is quoted at 25-1 by Betting World.

Smanjemanje, a six-year-old Kahal gelding, made his seasonal reappearance in a Pinnacle Stakes event over 1400m in October and looked to need it badly as he found little in the straight. He wasn’t persevered with in his next start, the Grade 2 Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile, and finished way back after going nowhere in the straight.

However, Smanjemanje looked more himself in his most recent outing in the Grade 2 Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m on the Turffontein Standside track, a race he won last year. He reared as the starter pressed the button and was slow away, but then ran on very well from the back of the field to finish fifth, six lengths behind Zambucca, with whom he will now be a whopping 6kg better off. That race was run in course record time, so it was a fine effort after the tardy start.

He will jump from a great draw of three on Saturday with regular pilot Grant van Niekerk aboard and will appreciate the step up to 2000m based on his July run. If Smanjemanje starts on terms this time, he could well be in the hunt in an open looking race.

Zackey continued, “It’s a very competitive race and giving weight away to the up and coming younger generation makes it hard to say how confident we can be, but he is very well in himself. His work has been good and he is full of himself.”

Zackey said that Smanjemanje’s first two runs of the season could be ignored. “He is now fit and is hundreds. Even this morning (Tuesday) his work was very good and now all we need is luck in the running.”

The Summerhill-bred Smanjemanje became known as the “giant killer” on the Highveld after his career was turned around as an early four-year-old by gelding and with the fitting of a cornell collar. The latter was necessary after it was discovered that his breathing issues were due to him displacing his soft palate.

SMANJEMANJE : THE 'JOBURG GIANT KILLER'

Smanjemanje, the “Johannesburg Giant Killer, put up pleasing work in his official televised Vodacom Durban July gallop on the Turffontein sand earlier this week and trainer Tyrone Zackey said he was pleased with his preparation.

Zackey’s charge is at the bottom of the bookmaker’s boards at 50-1, but that is the right sort of price for him as he won the Grade 2 Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m in November last year at odds of 33-1, and finished a close third in the Grade 1 President’s Champions Challenge over 2000m in April at odds of 45-1.

In between that the Summerhill Ready To Run graduate won the Grade 3 London News Stakes over 1800m in January at odds of 16-1, having run a 2,75 length fifth in the Grade 1 Summer Cup at the end of November. These performances have earned him the nickname the “Giant Killer” on the Highveld.

Zackey gave Smanjemanje a break after the Champions Challenge, so was very happy with his staying on three-length third in the Grade 3 Jubilee over 1800m last time out. “He still needed it and he had to carry 60kg,” he said. “You don’t want to overcook a July horse. The July has been his mission and he will come on from that run.”

Zackey added, “There has been no pressure on him to win any races to get into the July.”

Smanjemanje will be 5kg better off with the Jubilee winner Eton Square.

Zackey has prepared him for the tight Greyville track. He has shortened his work, wary that he will need an instant turn of foot at the top of the short 450m straight.

Karl Zechner substituted Smanjemanje’s big race jockey Grant van Niekerk for the gallop.

Regarding his draw of 11, Zackey said, “He will be out of the trouble. The jocks are all trying to find the fence, but you need a lot of gate speed to do that from his draw and he hasn’t got that.”

Zackey described how rough a race the July often was, but this didn’t decrease his confidence in the inexperienced Van Niekerk, who will be having his first July ride.

Smanjemanje finished a good fourth in the Grade 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes over 1600m at Clairwood as a two-year-old. However, he choked up in one of his subsequent races and was found to have a soft palate. A cornel collar was fitted, while he was also gelded, and Zackey said these measures brought tremendous improvement.

Co-owner George Barker represented Smanjemanje at the draw ceremony last Thursday. He has only been in racehorse ownership for three years. “Winning the July is what we all dream of. You can buy a Ferrari, but it will never give you this.”

Zackey summed up the Kahal five-year-old gelding’s chance, “I think he will do quite well and will hold his own provided he gets luck in running.”

Apprentice Grant van Niekerk appears to have built up a great relationship with Smanjemanje, having now registered a second feature success in three starts on the five-year-old Summerhill Ready To Run graduate.

The Tyrone Zackey-trained Smanjemanje galloped on from midfield to capture the Grade 3 London News Stakes over 1800m on the inside track at Turffontein on Sunday.

Going off at 16-1, he managed to hold off The Apache (28-10) by a head with fellow Summerhill Ready To Run graduate Pierre Jourdan 1.40 lengths back in third. Seal completed the Quartet.

DJ Detzky made the early pace and was closely followed by Queen’s Bay, Ilsanpietro and Smanjemanje. Raymond Danielson had The Apache nearer the back of the field, racing one position off the rail, while Sean Cormack placed Pierre Jourdan on The Apache’s inside.

As they came for home Ilsanpietro was quick to take the lead, but was soon challenged by Seal and Smanjemanje. While The Apache switched out for a run, Pierre Jourdan went to the inside and for a few strides battled to get galloping room. By the time Cormack had urged the favourite through the gap, Smanjemanje and The Apache had built up a useful lead and, despite hanging out in the closing stages, Smanjemanje held on to his advantage.

“He’s done it all himself, he has a big heart,” said Zackey. “I haven’t woken up from his last win in the Victory Moon Stakes. I was worried about the track as I thought it would be too short for him.”
