DAZZLING DANEHILL

DAZZLING DANEHILL

The dust has finally settled on Australia’s Magic Millions Premier Yearling sales marathon week, and once again it was a triumph for the greatest stallion in Southern Hemisphere history. If you did any advance work on the catalogue, you couldn’t help but notice the plethora of entries descended from Danehill in the first or second generation, to the point of virtual saturation. With the enormous books Australian stallions are serving these days, the catalogue is obviously dominated by his male descendants, and there’s no shortage of those who carry his influence on the distaff side, an amazing reflection of how quickly he has supplanted Star Kingdom as the principal source of quality racehorses Down Under.

Who would’ve thought that within little more than a decade, a stallion of the pervasive presence in their pedigrees such as Star Kingdom, would face the prospect of extinction as a male-line provider, given that for decades he carried that burden and shaped the Australian breed almost singlehandedly.

Students of the Danehill story would’ve been forgiven in the early years of his life as a “shuttler”, for believing that it was the suitability of his mates in Australasia that set him up for immortality, and especially those descending from Star Kingdom. In his initial years, Danehill’s mark as a stallion was undeniably Australian. The truth though, probably lies more in the fact that as a horse with obvious physical flaws and perhaps a little suspect on the performance side, he was considered surplus to requirements in Europe. His breeders, Juddmonte, do not lightly let a prospect go and it certainly wasn’t money that induced the sale. Juddmonte’s principal, Prince Khalid Abdullah, a first cousin to the King of Saudi Arabia, is not a man in need, but is one of the world’s foremost breeders of racehorses, and he was astute enough to retain a breeding interest in the horse he was parting with. In the end, Danehill was just as successful in the Northern Hemisphere, but only once European breeders came to appreciate his value, though in sheer numbers, his recognition there came much later in the day, and was therefore somewhat short-lived, as he died prematurely in 2003.

Anyone who knows Arrowfield’s John Messara as well as we do, would count him among the rare international visionaries of our sport, and when it comes to analysing and spotting a prospect, his record stands alone. This man bred Zabeel, he made Danehill and his three champion sons Redoute’s Choice, Flying Spur and Danzero, and his record as a “kingmaker” rivals that of Lord Derby, Federico Tesio and “Bull” Hancock. It didn’t take him long to identify the merits of this European champion sprinter of 1989, and it didn’t take Danehill long to sire the winner of the world’s richest two-year-old contest, Australia’s Golden Slipper. Indeed, it didn’t take him to long to sire his first three Golden Slipper winners; he did so in each of his first three crops, and while he did that in short time, his time at the top of Australia’s sire premiership was enduring.

No-one was surprised then, that the top lot at Aus $960,000 at last week’s Gold Coast sale, was a colt by Danehill’s son, Fastnet Rock, who in the same week, sired the winners of the New Zealand and Australian 1000 Guineas to boot. Neither was anyone surprised when the famous “split” between the original owners of Danehill, Messara’s Arrowfield and John Magnier’s Coolmore, made him the most valuable stallion in Australian history. The matter was settled in a Dutch auction before a former Chief Justice of Australia, and the horse was turned over at a reported $24million. That was a helluva lot of money in those days, but in retrospect, it was peanuts.

THE RICHEST TWO YEAR OLD RACE IN THE WORLD

Smart Missile wins the Jacob's Creek Todman Stakes from Sepoy

AU$3,5 MILLION GOLDEN SLIPPER (Grade 1)
Rosehill, Turf, 1200m
2 April 2011

South Africans attending the Melbourne Premier sale earlier this month, were awed by the performance of Sepoy, son of the major stallion, Elusive Quality, in his five length romp over the best juveniles of his generation in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr1). There was broad acknowledgment among Australian horsemen that they may have seen the best two year old in several decades, but Sepoy’s lines went mildly awry at the subsequent staging of the Todman Stakes in Sydney a week ago, when he was upstaged by Smart Missile, a strapping son of Fastnet Rock.

Tomorrow witnesses the running of the Golden Slipper (Gr1) at Rosehill outside Sydney, at AU$3.5million the world’s richest two year old race, and as you might expect, the principal protagonists are Sepoy and Smart Missile. Sepoy returns to ante-post favouritism at a little over 2/1, though Smart Missile showed he has maintained his sharp form with his Tuesday morning gallop at Randwick under jockey Glen Boss, covering the final 600m in 33,8 seconds. “He’s still learning, and this was another step in him understanding what’s required”, trainer Anthony Cummings told Australian Associated Press, “but for me, it was the way he did it.”

No farm has vaunted the virtues of the Danehill tribe more vigorously than Summerhill, and it will be a revelation to South Africans (though not to Australians) that twelve of the sixteen horse field are grandsons of Danehill, including Smart Missile. Keep an eye out for two others among them, Satin Shoes (a daughter of Flying Spur) and Karuta Queen (Not A Single Doubt). The race is run on a bend over 1,200m, and the draw is obviously of some significance; of those four, Smart Missile occupies the no.5 slot, Sepoy no.10, Satin Shoes no.2 and Karuta Queen no.13. A winning outcome for any colt engaged in the event normally results in outrageous offers from leading studs in Australia for his stud services, and while Sepoy will be beyond reach to any aspiring buyer as he is the property of Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Mohammed, any other colt could be up for grabs at a minimum of AU$20-30million. The world will be looking out for the results come Sunday morning.

R1,5 MILLION EMPERORS PALACE READY TO RUN CUP NOMINEE

Bhusende, translated from isiZulu, means “free”, and at the Vaal on Thursday there were no shackles holding back this Flying Spur colt.

Under a cultivating ride from jockey Anton Marcus, the 2008 Ready To Run Graduate, out of the family of Sir Tristram, glided up the 1400m turf straight to crack his maiden in ominous fashion for the Summerhill Stud Syndicate.

With the fourth richest race in Africa imminent, the in-form stable of Champion trainer Charles Laird certainly have its cards stacked… remember the classy debut of Blue Voyager just two days ago.

WAY WEST... TAKE THIS AS AN EARLY WARNING SIGN

way west

Way West

“WAYWARD IS NOT NECESSARILY WESTWARD”

There is a connotation of waywardness in the name of Way West, but if the early signs are anything to be relied apon, right here is where the action is taking place. This morning’s management meeting revealed, straight from the horse’s mouth, the early brilliance of the first crop of Way West, and it seems there might be something of their father in the early showings of his progeny.

Way West is remembered principally for his outrageous precocity as a juvenile, and the fact that, much like Maradonna and his finger from God, Way West found the proverbial gear from heaven in the closing stages of the Blue Diamond Prelude (Gr.3), where he inflicted a solid beating on two of Australia’s best juveniles, in what has become one of Australia’s leading “stallion-maker” events.

Behind him that day was third leading Australian freshman sire of 2009, Oratorio, as well as the Group One performer Sanziro, and we can only wonder what Way West might’ve achieved were it not for a hoof-splitting injury suffered as one of the leading fancies for that year’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr.1). His life may well have been one of unfulfilled prophecies, remembering that David Hayes very nearly gave up his celebrated career in Hong Kong to return to his native country, for the specific purpose of training Way West for his engagement in the world’s richest juvenile contest, the Golden Slipper (Gr.1).

In his presence at Summerhill, we’re reminded that all three of Danehill’s champion sire sons in the southern hemisphere carry the “Blue Diamond” ticket: Redoute’s Choice, Flying Spur and Danzero. The pattern of breeding represented in the make-up of last year’s Australian champion sire, Flying Spur (Danehill out of a Mr. Prospector mare) is a virtual copybook recall of the potency of Way West’s pedigree. A son of Danehill, the most successful sire of sires in Australian history, out of a daughter of the self-same Mr. Prospector.

We’ll be tracking the Way Wests as we get closer to the Ready To Run, but meanwhile, take this as an early warning sign. There are 17 engaged in the 2009 version itself, and who could guess at how many of them will make the cut for next year’s R1,5million renewal of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup?
