D DAY FOR DA FIRST READY TO RUN MARK II

READY TO RUN SALE MARK II
Shongweni, 23 February 2011

Because it could be the forerunner to something quite significant for the future, Wednesday 23rd February could be historic. Summerhill pioneered the Ready To Run concept some 25 years ago in South Africa, and while its original intent was to provide a new idea in thoroughbred marketing, it also served to clear the decks of what was left on the farm.

It’s come a long way since, developing a reputation as the best source of quality racehorses in the land, pound-for-pound. That it remains that, is evident in the six Graded Stakes winners (including two of the best three-year-old fillies in South Africa) already this season. Yet the number of outstanding horses (champions amongst them) that’ve remained on the farm for private sale, is quite astounding. Last year’s Dubai Carnival Victor Ludorum, Imbongi; Champion Older Filly, Bold Ellinore; top three of his generation, Emperor Napoleon; and millionaire and Champion Stayer, Amphitheatre; make up the honour roll, all of them making less than R100,000 off the farm.

Tomorrow represents an opportunity for investors, local and foreign, to stake their claims to a hand in 55 lots, and it’s a pretty sure bet that this time next year, we’ll be hailing the astuteness of at least a couple of buyers who got lucky particularly as they go through the ring without reserve.

Tonight at Hartford, we entertain a fairly auspicious gathering of horsemen, including two of Singapore’s biggest owners, Dennis and Gael Evans, the Niarchos family’s big chief, Alan Cooper from France, Charles Vaughan Fowler of the UK, Irishman Eamonn Cullen, and Summerhill patron and big German owner, Rupert Plersch, Wolf Power’s celebrated trainer, Ricky Maingard (now in Mauritius), and one of Mauritius’ perennial top conditioners, Hughes Maigrot, and his long-serving client, Eduard Nairac. It promises to be some kind of party.

Mike de Kock

mike de kockMike de KockThe man international horsemen have come to regard as one of, if not the best trainer in the world, has pioneered South Africa’s reputation as a world class producer of horsemen and racehorses, through his exploits on the international stages of the United States, Dubai, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Singapore. This past season he took the National Trainers’ Championship by the widest margin in history, amassing earnings in excess of R22 million.

An ardent supporter of the Ready To Run over the years, his graduates include the Classic and Group One performers Imbongi, Bold Ellinore, Emperor Napoleon and this season’s stand-outs, Igugu and Checcetti.

De Kock holds a powerful hand for this year’s running of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, with Igugu (likely to at start at short-odds), Checcetti, Inkanyezi, Chekeche, Danehill Darling etc.

He makes his fourth appearance as a judge at the Ready To Run, and will be receiving his Honours degree at the “Horsemen’s Opening” of the Al Maktoum School Of Management Excellence on Thursday evening, where he is the honour speaker.

Dean Kannemeyer

dean kannemeyerDean KannemeyerIf ever a panellist had the pedigree, it belongs to this man. Son of previous jockey and Champion trainer, Peter, Dean has carved his own highly distinguished niche in the annals of South African racing. Between him and his father, they’ve trained six Cape of Good Hope Guineas winners, three J & B Met heroes, three Durban July aces, as well as a legion of the country’s other major events. No doubt, if you ask him, Dean will tell you the best horse he’s trained was the remarkable Dynasty, but in Noordhoek Flyer, he has one of the most pulsating athletes in the land at the moment. One to slip his clutches was the ultimate Horse Of The Year, Irish Flame, whose career Dean launched before his purchase for irresistible money by patrons of the Mike de Kock stable.

He makes his fourth appearance as a judge on the panel, and will be receiving his Honours degree at the School Of Excellence on Thursday.

Joey Ramsden

joey ramsdenJoey RamsdenLike Dean Kannemeyer, Joey carries a pedigree steeped in racing tradition, with a father who ranks a furlong in front of all handicappers in the UK, and a step-mum with a distinguished record as a trainer in Doncaster, England. A taste of Africa, however, made Joey a “local”, and his rapid ascent to the upper echelons of our training ranks is testimony to his skills as a horseman. While horses were his chosen path in the end, he possesses the agility of mind of a man who could have been a professor in any number of disciplines, and the combination of the two has made him the conditioner of choice of the some of the nation’s leading owners, not the least of whom is the biggest and the most successful owner of all time, Markus Jooste.

Joey’s association with many of the country’s top horses is well-known, but it’s probably fair to nominate Winter Solstice, erstwhile Horse Of The Year, as his best.

Three years as a Ready To Run judge earns Joey his Bachelors degree at the Al Maktoum School Of Excellence on Thursday.

Jehan Malherbe

jehan malherbeJehan MalherbeThe dulcet tones of the Western Cape’s most famous racecaller are known to every fan of our sport across the country, but that’s just the beginning of Jehan Malherbe’s array of racing attributes. A founding partner in the world-renowned Form Bloodstock Organisation, he combines an uncanny knack for what makes a horse run, with an instinctive appreciation of the copious data his organisation has at its fingertips, in identifying top prospects. His most successful clients include His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifah Al Maktoum and Mary Slack’s Wilgersbosdrift Stud.

Among the many outstanding horses he has been associated with are the past season’s champions Bold Silvano, Ancestral Fore and Horse Of The Year, Irish Flame, which makes him as hot as “touchpaper” right now. Another lining up for his Bachelor’s “cap” on Thursday evening at the School Of Excellence.

Sean Tarry

sean tarrySean TarryThe Lebanese community in Johannesburg has been one of the mainstays of the industry for many decades, and the great trainers and jockeys they have produced have long passed into legend. The senior flag bearer right now is a relatively young man in Sean Tarry, perennially among the top few trainers in the country many years before his time.

He’s been associated with a long line of Group One winners, the stand-outs being the mercurial sprinters, National Colour and Mythical Flight, both of whom carried the colours of Sean’s principal patron, Chris Van Niekerk. Making his acceptance speech as Owner Of The Year in 2008, van Niekerk acknowledged Sean as the single most important element behind his phenomenal success. Sean’s Ready To Run successes include millionaire Fork Lightening, a R65,000 bargain.

Like several of his fellow panellists, Sean has a rare talent for picking a good racehorse, and earns his Honours badge at Thursday’s celebrations at the Al Maktoum School Of Management Excellence.

Graeme Hawkins

graeme hawkinsGraeme HawkinsThere are few in racing that can claim to rank among the world’s top racing commentators, and at the same time occupy a place in the pantheon of elite auctioneers, yet Graeme Hawkins’ credentials stretch well beyond that. His knowledge and understanding of racing and the nuances that make our sport what it is, the personalities behind it, and the idiosyncrasies of both, have earned this man the title of “Mr Racing”. He brings to the panel a razor sharp mind and an acerbic sense of humour. Once CEO of Bloodstock SA and currently C.O.O of Gold Circle, his footprint is deep-etched in the chronicles of our game.

He’ll tell you he’s been the Number One judge at the Gallops to date, and while the acid test awaits him on Friday, he’s certainly earned his Honours “blazer” at Thursday’s gathering at the School Of Excellence.

Michael Roberts

michael robertsMichael RobertsRacing fans of the 1950’s and 60’s would have told you that after Tiger Wright, there could never be another jockey in his class, so when Michael Roberts came along and broke every conceivable record Tiger had stood for, there were many who could only shake their heads in wonder. The only man in South African history to take out 13 national titles as well as give the world a riding lesson as Champion Jockey of Britain, Michael Roberts was a veritable star in the firmament of international racing. Besides his championships, Michael achieved the unthinkable for a boy from Oudshoorn, in becoming the number one rider for Sheikh Mohammed of Dubai, the world’s biggest and most powerful owner of all time. A stockman, a horseman, a breeder, a jockey and trainer of consummate professionalism, we are enriched to have a man of Michael’s international stature on our panel. Lines up Thursday for his Honours degree after four years in judgement.

Craig Peters

craig petersCraig PetersThe judges’ panel at the Ready To Run Gallops comprises a brotherhood of free-spirited, bloody-minded individuals, all of whom have reached the pinnacle of their professions through a common understanding that nothing is possible without courage, enterprise and dedication way beyond the comprehension of ordinary man. Convening a panel of such “supermen” demands the status and respect of someone who has been around for a long time, and whose knowledge of the game stands the scrutiny of the sternest.

Such a man is “Eagle Eye” Peters, racecaller, master of ceremonies and facilitator for almost three decades. Besides convening the panel, Craig’s function includes the calling of every gallop on the day, and only a man with his history and the depth of research he undertakes in advance of the gallops, guarantee the professionalism he brings to the table. Remarkably, he makes up a band on the panel of three of the world’s most accomplished commentators, with Jehan Malherbe and Graeme Hawkins, while television personality, Nico Kritsiotis is on the cusp of membership of the same elite group. He earns his Honours blazer Thursday evening for four year’s service.

Eamonn Cullen

eamonn cullenEamonn CullenNow serving for the third time as a judge on the Emperors Palace Ready To Run panel, Eamonn Cullen first “guested” as our international invitee when he was with Irish Thoroughbred Marketing. A man steeped in the traditions of the promotion of Thoroughbreds, he served his “apprenticeship” at the best school in the world, under a legend by the name of Richard Henry at the Coolmore Stud in his native country, Ireland. He recently translocated to South Africa, where he’s taken up duties as head of marketing with Bloodstock South Africa, and he’s already made his presence felt through some bold international initiatives.

Observers who’ve seen him in action on the panel, will tell you they are endeared by his Irish wit, his to-the-point observations, and the confusion he sows with his unintelligible accent. Earns his Bachelors cap on Thursday at the “School”.

SPRING HAS GENUINELY SPRUNG

pierre jourdan and igugu

…THEY BOTH COME FROM THE CHAMPIONS.

Did you see the “Big ones” at Turffontein on Saturday? Pierre Jourdan was sublime, Igugu simply imperious. The one, hero of last year’s Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, the other, at short odds for this year’s.

In some respects, they’re poles apart. The one’s by a less fashionable stallion, the other by the “hottest” in the world. The one cost R60,000, the other a cool R1million. The one’s a colt, the other a filly.

But the one thing they have in common, is they both come from the Champions. Like all the famous graduates of the Ready To Run.

As an assembly, they could fill the walls of a Hall of Fame all on their own.

In every respect, it’s why people love the Ready To Run. They know there’s a horse for everyone, and that we’ve made it possible with our six cheques payment scheme*.

That’s why we’ve laid on the cameras for you on Friday, and a panel of some of the best horsemen in the land. Mike de Kock, Eamonn Cullen, Graeme Hawkins, Dean Kannemeyer, Jehan Malherbe, Craig Peters, Joey Ramsden, Michael Roberts and Sean Tarry. There to make the job even easier.

DAVE MOLLETT : SOUTH AFRICAN DERBY D-DAY

mike de kock and gary alexander

Mike de Kock and Gary Alexander - Battle Talk
(Photos : Mike de Kock Racing / JC Photos)

SA DERBY (GR1)
TURFFONTEIN, 24 APRIL 2010

DAVE MOLLETT - It’s the sort of remark one would expect at the weigh-in for a Heavyweight boxing bout.

“Take it from me, we’re not going to make life easy for him.”

In boxing you never know quite what’s going to happen. Only this week, Venezuelan champion, Edwin Valero, murdered his wife and then hanged himself in his jail cell.

The guy who made this statement on Tellytrack was Mike de Kock and he’s hoping his Derby trio can put the favourite on the canvas. The “him” he was referring to was star three year-old, Pierre Jourdan.

Gary Alexander’s talented son of Parade Leader is the name on everyone’s lips as Turffontein puts the finishing touches to one of its biggest days in the course’s history. If Derreck David gets his mount first past the post, the roar will resemble past big race victories by the likes of Elevation and, more recently, Horse Chestnut.

Can Piere Jourdan follow in the footsteps of Triple Crown winner, Horse Chestnut? The answer to that question is yes. Can he be rated on a par? The answer, no, not yet.

It wasn’t a Triple Crown race, but the manner of Horse Chestnut’s eight lengths win - cheered home by both Harry and Bridget Oppenheimer - against his elders in the 1999 J&B Met is forever etched in my memory. Can you name the runner-up? Yes, it was the previous year’s July hero, Classic Flag.

So how is Mike going to make it tough for Pierre Jourdan in the SA Derby. Quite easy. He’s got three runners and he knows the possible chink in the favourite’s armour is the 2450m trip which he’s tackling for the first time.

His ace surely has to be Irish Flame who followed a third in the SA Classic with a sixth behind Regal Ransom (look out for a big run on Saturday) in a 1600m race at Turffontein. The son of Dynasty finished upsides his stablemate, Braggadacio, at level weights so it’s little wonder Betting World have chalked him up second favourite.

But Mike isn’t going to have to take a leaf out of Aidan O’Brien’s book and instruct the rider of either Happy Valley or Ilsanpietro to make the pace if we get a “Cape crawl.”

“If they go fast or slow, Pierre Jourdan has still got to get the trip - there’ll be no plan for mine to burn it up front. But hopefully the race will be run at a decent pace, but if not we wouldn’t be shy to make it.”

“Possibly, Charles’ (Laird) runner, Conquered Dream, could be a threat as he’s got no stamina doubts,” added Mike. Whatever happens in the Derby, he’s expecting a big run from Rudra in the Champions Challenge as the horse has had “a great prep.”

A runner I think can also get in the mix in the Derby is another Mrs O owned horse, Service Ace. I remain convinced we haven’t seen the best of this fellow yet, and he was only a length and a quarter adrift of Irish Flame in the Classic.

Mike doesn’t agree and commented “I know this family - there must be some doubt about him getting the trip.”

Bloodstock SA will be delighted that Mike has remained in town to attend this weekend’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sales as the stable have Lizard’s Desire and Imbongi batting for them at the big meeting in Hong Kong on Sunday.

Lizard’s Desire unshipped Jeff Lloyd in a work-out on Monday, but both horse and jockey were unscathed. Jeff commented: “We were taking the turn, everything normal, and he suddenly goes the other way - just like that. It’s strange because he has experience of racing right-handed in South Africa long before his trip to Dubai.”

Mike makes a valid point when he says Lizard’s Desire “took his game to another level” on the new tapeta surface in Dubai. Whether he can reproduce that form on grass remains to be seen. My advice for punters on Sunday is simple - lump on Presvis provided Ryan Moore is in the saddle. Check before you place your bet because both he and Lizard’s Desire’s jockey, Christophe Soumillon, might find themselves grounded in Europe.

The possible no show - because of the volcanic ash problem - is currently the biggest worry for new Bloodstock SA marketing manager, Eamonn Cullen, ahead of this weekend’s National Sale.

“Completely unforeseeable - we’re just hoping they resume flights by Thursday or a number of overseas buyers won’t be making the trip,” said Eamonn.

Nevertheless, as Mick Goss noted in his latest Summerhill newsletter, there is “a stable demand for horses domestically” and it could be that the home side saves the day.

Mike commented in a recent Tellytrack interview I conducted that he felt that “it would be harder and harder for the local man with R200,000 to spend to get what he wants.” I asked Mick whether he agreed with this assessment.

His reply: “I’m flattered you should send me Mike’s comment on the sales, and I’m excited that R200,000 might not be enough. He knows what happened in Dubai much better than I do, though I’d be surprised if there was a flood of people from that quarter in the present climate. That said, even a few big hitters can change a market.”

“While I respect Mike’s view, I would think you can still find very good value in South Africa. I don’t expect the market to be up this year, and if you look at recent results, horses bought before Lehmann Brothers, like Pierre Jourdan (R60,000), Smangaliso (R100,000) and Salutation (R50,000) are still there to be had,” added Mick.

The weekend ahead could probably only be topped by being the only male locked in Teazers! But - like the Yearling Sales - that could prove pretty costly as well.

THE GREATEST AND THE ONLY SALES PANEL ON EARTH

READY TO RUN GALLOPS AT SUMMERHILL
16 0CTOBER 2009

We’ve said this before, but South Africans occasionally need to remind themselves how lucky they are. Anyone who might’ve watched Robin Bruss intercourse with Phumelela’s David Attenborough on Inside Racing on Monday night, will know how well served we are on the intellectual side of our sport. And if you could be an eavesdropper at the Emperors Palace Ready To Run dinner on the eve of the Ready To Run Gallops at Summerhill on the 16th October, you’d have an inkling of the colossus among the gathering panel of experts.

It needs to be said right up front : the Emperors Palace Ready To Run is the only sale known to man, where the buying public are served by people of such standing in their profession, but what makes this one especially unique, is that these fellows are regular patrons of the sale themselves, and so, in a strange sort of way, when they put their reputations on the line in nominating their fancies, they also immediately attract attention to them and hence, they stir their own competition. These guys are bigger than that, though, and they give of their time and their expertise, measuring several centuries between them, freely and voluntarily, because they know the game, and they know how it needs to be played.

It’s a tribute to the standing of the Ready To Run sale and the horses that have flowed from it, that these gentleman have come from far and wide, (indeed, some of our panellists have travelled from abroad to be here), yet it’s not only in what they have to say about the horses, but in the sheer weight of their presence, that we begin to understand the reverence that this sale carries these days.

While many people might take the panel’s existence as a given, and assume these guys know their stuff, it’s an eye-opener to see just how much preparatory work goes on before they even arrive at Summerhill. So it’s entirely fitting that we should spoil them with some pre-dinner entertainment and a feast at South Africa’s No.1 restaurant (it’s official now!), in an attempt to show our appreciation. They have been known, occasionally, to reciprocate with their own contribution towards the entertainment, but for those of us who are approaching maturity, we’ve generally moved on by that stage in the wee hours.

As part of their armoury, the panellists are provided with a pen picture of every horse in the sale, a commentary on its pedigree, and what it’s been showing in its gallops to date. In turn, it’s our job to provide you with a pen picture of the analysts.
