THE SUMMERHILL DURBAN JULY TRIFECTA

“IGUGU, PIERRE JOURDAN AND BLACK WING”

VODACOM DURBAN JULY
Greyville, Turf, 2200m
2 July 2011

We’re not sure what the temperature’s like in places like Joburg and Cape Town, but in our neck of the woods, it seems as if everyone bears a reverence for Igugu, the R1 million graduate of the 2009 Summerhill draft at the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale. The “farm” trifecta is made up of the ruling favourite Igugu, together with two other Ready To Run graduates in Pierre Jourdan and Black Wing, currently quoted at 10-1 and 50-1 respectively. For R24, you can cover the lot, and while that may be a sentimental bet, they’re all in great shape, and you might have to contend with the dilemma as to whether to take early retirement or not if it comes off! You know about Igugu and Pierre Jourdan from these columns, and it’s already well known that Black Wing may be the “lurker” among the three year olds.

Black Wing gets a kilo from those to whom he finished within a length in the Daily News 2000 (Gr1), and the Julys over 2200m, where a kilo can amount to anything from a length to a length and a half. It might just be enough to tip the scales.

If you’re looking for “connectivity”, Denis and Gael Evans, owners of Run For It, are lodging with us at Hartford House. He’s second favourite.

So maybe box the four of them, and don’t forget the quartet.

THERE'S A BLACK SHADOW OVER THE DURBAN JULY

“BLACK WING”

VODACOM DURBAN JULY
Greyville, Turf, 2200m

The fun of owning horses with partners, is as often as not, in the mutual pleasure you get when they’re good. For many years, we’ve bred horses with our English pal, Alec Foster, and our successes include the top performers Steamy Window (Natal Oaks Gr1,) Cereus (the Gold Cup Gr1,) and the tough-as-teak multiple Group winner, Redcarpet Style.

The latest to emerge from a relatively tiny bunch of mares is Black Wing, of whom you’ve heard a bit in these columns of late. If he wins the Vodacom Durban July, it’s another case of bringing home the bacon (remember Imbongi and Pierre Jourdan, among the current stars). Alec recalls trying to sell Redcarpet Style three times, and then looking him in the eye and saying “If it’s not to be, let’s do it together”. The good Lord was kind.

The world is full of exports who more often than not, have a misconception of their superiority. Animals on the other hand, know more than we do. Dogs bark at night, when we are asleep.

Paul Gadsby says Black Wing is in excellent fettle. He believes he may have come on a length for his Daily News 2000 exertions, having left him a little underdone by missing the Guineas. With a pull of a kilo on those ahead of him in the Daily News, who knows? He might also be barking by 16:45 on Saturday!

The Gavin van Zyl yard celebrated their second Grade 1 win of the season on Saturday, this time with The Apache, who conquered in an exciting finish to the Grade 1 Daily News 2000.

The Apache won the Grade 2 Dingaans at Turffontein in November and was then sent to the Kenilworth Quarantine station ready to be shipped to owner Winston Chow’s home country of Hong Kong. However, an outbreak of African Horse Sickness meant all exports were cancelled and he returned to the van Zyl yard, running his first race for six months in last months KRA Guineas. He over raced in that race and was too handy, so the van Zyl yard were confident he would do better this time.

The Mogok three-year-old colt is not quite as strapping a type as his paternal Grade 1 winning half-brother, Orbison, but he’s very well balanced. He duly delivered under another fine big race ride from jockey Raymond Danielson. Danielson knows this horse very well and would have been confident when he settled well this time even if he was right at the back of the field as he has both a fine turn of foot and is able to maintain a sustained finish. He duly made up the ground rapidly and by the line was flying together with the favourite Run For It, who also came from well back. English Garden had just bettered the eventual fourth-placed Black Wing when The Apache and Run For It snared him on the line.

The photo-finish confirmed that The Apache had held on by a short-head from Run For It and less than a length separated the first four, with Gold Onyx just 0,5 lengths further back in fifth. The Apache was bred by Scott Brothers and now has the Vodacom Durban July in his sights.

FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH

DAILY NEWS 2000
Greyville Racecourse
4 June 2011

Amorette Kramer, the girl you talk to at the Summerhill horse office and who greets you with such enthusiasm when you visit, was in touch with Paul Gadsby earlier this week for a report on Black Wing’s preparation for his meeting with destiny in the Daily News 2000 (Gr.1) tomorrow.

Here’s the report :

“Saturday will be Black Wing’s acid test, as he comes up against the best of his contemporaries. I’ve always thought he was Group One material, and a good run on Saturday will confirm my opinion of him. We’re saddled with the outside draw, sadly, but there’s nothing we can do about that, and we only hope he makes the money. We’ve lost his regular rider, Shaun Veale, to injury, but we have a capable replacement in Ian Sturgeon. The horse couldn’t be better in himself, and he’s champing at the bit for his big day”.

FAME, FAST WOMEN... AND FAIRYTALES

Woolavington 2000 & Daily News 2000
Greyville, 4 June 2011

The first Saturday in June is famously remembered for the running of the Investec (English) Derby (Gr.1), and its renewal tends to overwhelm all other news events around it. Locally, a breed-shaping duo of races takes its own place in our calendar, in the shape of the Daily News 2000 (Gr.1) and the Woolavington 2000 (Gr.1), as-often-as-not pointers to the outcome of the three-year-old colts and fillies championships.

These take place this weekend at the home of the Vodacom Durban July, the Greyville circuit which lies in one of the most picturesque settings any racecourse occupies anywhere in the world. Those that know the city of Durban, will know the city bowl and the principal residential area, the Berea. The 3000m circuit (one of the biggest racecourses in the world), which embraces the Royal Durban Golf Club and lies between the Berea (a range of hills overlooking the city and the Indian ocean) and the central business district, which means it provides a vista on big race days for many of the residents of the city from their favourable perches on the Berea, the track also serves as a “through road” (via subways) for most of the city’s business traffic on its way home on an evening.

Back to the races. The press seem to think that the Woolavington is a one-horse race, dominated by the irrepressible Igugu, whom as most of our readers know was a R1 million graduate of the 2009 Summerhill Ready To Run draft. She is the first filly in South African history to win the Triple Tiara, and she is the reigning favourite for the Vodacom Durban July. The only question mark over Igugu, lies in the fact that she’s had a very long season, kicking off in August of last year, in her preparation for her meeting with Hollywoodboulevard in the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup, and she’s been on the go ever since. If she’s able to maintain her form right through to the July, she’s going to be a formidable opponent for anyone wishing to cross swords with her.

The Daily News 2000 is an altogether different matter, and here, because all the runners in Classics start at level weights, the merit ratings of the horses engaged are usually a good guide. Most of the top three-year-old colts are engaged, and from a Summerhill perspective, we have Black Wing running off a merit rating of 100, earned principally for the fact that he’s unbeaten in his last four starts. He’s a progressive sort, but whether he’s up to beating the likes of Run For It, Top Seller, English Garden etc, only Saturday will tell us. Paul Gadsby, one-time top jockey, raconteur and newly-turned trainer, has fluked this one in his first year at his new profession. “Fluked” is probably not an appropriate word here, as Gadsby chose him and personally rode the horse on the Summerhill Gallops, from the ranks of those that were left on the farm, for a paltry R50,000. This will be some kind of a fairytale for owner Clive Murphy, if Black Wing pulls it off, though he’s not yet faced this kind of opposition. That said, his last run did tell us something though, as he bumped a very promising older sort in Mike de Kock’s Argentinean import, Esteco, on his last outing, and this one has since franked the form impressively on his next racecourse visit.

Black Wing’s family goes back just one generation to one of Summerhill’s foundation mares, Final Wonder, the last (and the only) foal by the great champion stallion, Persian Wonder. His dam is a sister to the South African Classic (Gr.1) ace, Last Watch, and she won herself up to 2400m, so stamina should not be a limiting factor.

But the fairytale? We’ll know by 17:23 hours Saturday (Channel 232, or visit www.summerhill.co.za, click blog.)
