INVESTEC DERBY (Grade 1)
Epsom Downs, Turf, 2423m
1 June 2013

Impressive when winning the May 9 Group 3 Chester Vase, Ruler of the World (Ire) (Galileo) entered the Group 1 Investec Derby as the 7-1 second-favored of the Ballydoyle quintet and emerged on top under jockey Ryan Moore for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

Settled towards the rear early, the bay who sported cheekpieces as he did at Chester, surged to the front passing the quarter pole and kept grinding to beat the strong-finishing Libertarian (GB) (New Approach) by 1 1/2 lengths, with Galileo Rock (Ire) (Galileo) a short head behind in third.

“We feel very lucky to be standing here,” John Magnier said. “This is what it’s all about. That’s why the Derby is such an interesting race, as its all unfolding and we didn’t know where they were this year because of the weather.”

Dawn Approach (Ire) (New Approach) was lit up from the outset and his refusal to settle meant that he was a spent force by the time the quarter mile pole was reached, ultimately finishing last.

INVESTEC DERBY (Group 1)
Epsom Downs, Turf, 2400m
2 June 2012

Geoff Lester - Aidan O’Brien, who has sent out five seconds since he last won the G1 Investec Derby with High Chaparral in 2002, might still have 24 entries for the Blue Riband Classic, the Group 1 Invested Derby at Epsom on June 2, but the record-breaking Ballydoyle trainer had eyes only for G1 2000 Guineas winner Camelot (Ire) (Montjeu) when he unveiled his team of superstars at a press open day Monday morning at the famed training center.

Asked whether he was confident that Camelot, who came from last at Newmarket, would have the stamina for the mile and a half, O’Brien said: “Being by Montjeu, you would have to be optimistic that he will stay, but there are also serious Danehill and Kingmambo traits in Camelot, and he has always been a horse with tremendous speed.”

O’Brien continued, “Epsom is a unique atmosphere and can get to many horses, and, while Camelot is a calm individual and very relaxed, like so many with such an explosive burst of acceleration he has lots of nervous energy, so we have to be careful with him, and he won’t do too much more work before the big day.”

Joseph O’Brien, who will be 19 next week, celebrated his first British Classic success on Camelot at Newmarket, and his father admitted that both he and his wife Anne-Marie will be the proudest parents in the world if he happens to win at Epsom.

“We are enjoying what is a fairytale with Joseph riding these big winners, but I don’t even want to think about how I would feel if the dream became reality at Epsom,” he said. “It could all have ended in disaster in the French Guineas on Sunday when Furner’s Green took a fatal fall passing the winning post.”

“Camelot has been a special horse from day one,” O’Brien said of the likely Derby favourite. “We were very nervous before the Guineas, especially as we knew that Joseph was going to drop him out and ride him like a doubtful stayer. Joseph wanted him to learn at Newmarket, and what I liked was the way that Camelot came through the gaps between horses and put his head down and fought. Camelot has the looks, the pedigree and the presence, and he reminds me of a dressage horse in that his movement is perfection.”

As for his rising star stable jockey, O’Brien offered, “Joseph has never known anything but horses from the moment he could walk. He used to sit in the back of the jeep with me on the gallops in the mornings before he went to school, and then he would ride out every weekend. He has been involved in all the discussions about the horses from an early age, and he has been with us in the good days and the ordinary days. Joseph rides out every morning, and our other three children have also starting riding out, but we all know nothing else. We don’t do holidays - apart from when we go to the Breeders’ Cup!”

“We are all very excited about the Derby, but it is a long time since we have won (39 losers since High Chaparral), and many a year we have come home feeling very humble. We have done everything we can, and now we can, but hope and pray that Camelot is good enough.”

RACING POST TROPHY FALLS TO CAMELOT

RACING POST TROPHY (Group 1)
Doncaster, Turf, 1600m
22 October 2011

The 51st renewal of the Racing Post Trophy (Gr1) lost a fascinating contender when Godolphin’s Encke (Kingmambo) was found to be lame Friday morning, but by the time Camelot (GB) (Montjeu) had passed the line all the focus was firmly on Ballydoyle’s new leading man.

Despite creating a striking impression at 1-3 on debut over a mile at Leopardstown, this was a real test of his merit against proven rivals off a subsequent lengthy absence. While the common sense view was that he had something to prove at cramped odds, the significant early gamble suggested that he ranks at the top of the pecking order of a talented crop of 2-year-olds at Rosegreen.

Ridden with maximum faith as stable companion St Nicholas Abbey (Ire) (Montjeu) had been in this contest two years ago, the Joseph O’Brien-piloted bay allowed his barnmate Learn (Ire) (Galileo) five lengths head start and was only asked to move closer as Kevin Manning tackled the pacesetter with Zip Top. In a matter of strides, Camelot was upon that rival, as Fencing (Street Cry) tried to make a fist of it out wide, but the winner was barely out of a canter in an impressive show of dominance throughout the closing stages.

“I thought I was on the best horse and he never really came off the bridle,” O’Brien said. “He’s very smart. He was a little bit keen in the first furlong, but he hadn’t been out for a while and was fresh. He traveled and did it all very easily.”

Aidan O’Brien revealed afterwards that Camelot had been hitting the bullseye on the Ballydoyle starometer. “The data we were getting from him at home was showing up as something out of the ordinary,” O’Brien told PA Sport. “Although you are only reading that stuff, he still had to come here today and prove it. He’s a super-quick thinker with a lovely temperament, and he’s a joy to have anything to do with. He can do probably whatever you want. The boys will make the decision, but you saw the speed.”

Zip Top’s trainer Jim Bolger added, “The winner is obviously a very smart horse. Our horse has run a good race, and I think he’s entitled to improve. I think he’ll find improvement into next year. I’d imagine he’ll be going to Dubai and next year will be up to the people at Darley.

DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH DERBY (Group 1)
26 June 2011

Since taking over at Ballydoyle, Aidan O’Brien has retrieved all the former glories of the legendary stable, and when Treasure Beach (GB) (Galileo) led home stable companions Seville (Ger) (Galileo) and Memphis Tennessee (Ire) (Hurricane Run) in yesterday’s G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, another historic milestone was reached. That result meant a sixth consecutive renewal for the Rosegreen establishment, a ninth overall for its trainer and a remarkable fourth one-two-three in the race since 2002.

Having been denied in the final yards of the June 4 G1 Epsom Investec Derby, Treasure Beach had no Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu) to spoil his party this time, and the 7-2 second choice was delivered with accurate timing by Colm O’Donoghue to work his way past Seville and the pacesetting Memphis Tennessee in the final 150 yards and win by 3/4 of a length. Carlton House (USA) (Street Cry), who was again the hot favorite as he had been at Epsom, never looked like justifying odds of 5-4 and was a one-paced fourth.

FAME AND GLORY SECURES GOLD CUP FOR BALLYDOYLE

GOLD CUP (Group 1)
Royal Ascot, 4000m
16 June 2011

Royal Ascot witnessed one of the great gambles yesterday when Fame and Glory (GB) (Montjeu) gave a passable impression of Yeats (Ire) to annex a fifth G1 Gold Cup in six years for Ballydoyle at a rain-soaked Royal Ascot.

Settled against the rail early under jockey Jamie Spencer in the spot the his illustrious predecessor used to enjoy in his four forays here, the bay was lolling off the moderate pace which was upped a notch after a mile by the veteran Geordieland (Fr) (Johann Quatz). Still cruising with a half mile remaining, Jamie Spencer waited for racing room to appear on his outside, and asked Fame and Glory to go through the gears at the top of the stretch. The confidence in his 11-8 favoritism proved infectious and the bay was carried by the wave of the crowd’s will as he swooped to the lead approaching the final furlong. Rolling by Duncan (GB) (Dalakhani), he received a smack with the whip there and a few after as Opinion Poll (IRE) (Halling) arrived and kept grinding way in the final yardsGodolphin had overturned So You Think (NZ) on Wednesday and it looked momentarily as if a case of de ja vu was about to strike with Opinion Poll coming out wide. But the Derrick Smith silks stayed ahead this time and, at the line, it was three lengths back to the royal blue.

“We didn’t go very fast early and I was delighted when I saw Geordieland go round the field and inject some pace,” Spencer said. “He wasn’t keen, but because he has so much class and is used to going a different pace he wanted that to make it more comfortable for him. It was a very easy, push-button ride and I’m just privileged to be allowed to ride him. Everyone was doubting him for the last few weeks, but we never had any doubts as those first two races were just to bring him along. It’s a great training performance.”

“Very few mile-and-a-quarter Group 1 winners get to run in a Gold Cup, but class makes them stay,” Aidan O’Brien said of the 5-year-old, who capped a successful venture for Dr Jim and Fitri Hay into joint-ownership with Derrick Smith, Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor. “He’s been a Group 1 winner every year since he was a 2-year-old, and we never knew until we tried, but we believed he would definitely get two miles. We are privileged to have him and Jamie was very confident and gave him an unbelievable ride.”

Another tilt at the October 2 G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is on the cards for Fame and Glory after his luckless runs in that Longchamp showpiece in 2009 and 2010. “The plan after today was to give him a break and train him for the Arc again, with a run beforehand,” O’Brien added.
