South Africans can be hard-headed sometimes, but we generally don’t bump our hard heads twice on the same stone, do we? While our thoroughbred buyers are known for strong individual opinions and preferences, they know a good deal when they see one. Even if they stood on the sidelines early!

Last week we reported a record turnout at the 2010 Ready To Run Gallops, which goes to show that a good number of critics have come round to recognize that the Ready To Run concept is one that works, that the Ready To Run Sale is pound for pound the best value sale on the planet, and that the organisers have kept their promises!

Midway through 2007 Mick Goss of Summerhill Stud announced a R500,000 Sweepstakes for what would be known as the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup over 1400m at Turffontein. The stakeholders Summerhill, Bloodstock SA, Phumelela and Emperors Palace wanted to develop a rare event that would give bloodstock buyers a chance to acquire superbly-bred runners at value prices, pay owners and trainers handsomely for participating and bring some of racing’s lost glamour back to the Highveld.

Mark Dixon and his patrons scooped the first Ready To Run prize with their R180,000 purchase Umngazi and the trophy remained in KZN when Mike Miller and company took more than double the loot with R100,000 bargain Smangaliso in the 2008 renewal, contested for R1,25 million. Last year the lion’s share of R1,5 million went to R60,000 buy Pierre Jourdan, whose feats since the race made world headlines.

Students of trends and patterns will argue that this year’s winner will come from the R10,000 – R60,000 range and that it is likely to be a filly. In looking at the current Ready To Run Log, it is easy to side with an argument for fillies, seeing that rising star Igugu and her up-and-coming stablemate Checcetti are top of the bunch and another filly Hollywoodboulevard finds herself in fourth spot. Two other females Honolulu and Danehill Darling occupy top 10 positions.

But Falbrav’s flashy son Draconian has a point to prove and his stablemate Al’s Mark, at this writing still a Maiden, was noted in the press recently as “one who will win many races!” A few notches down the log Umfutho, unlucky when hampered for a winning run last week, the speedy Bussell and well-related Red Delicious, the lurker in the pack, might well come to the party to ensure that Igugu has her share of opposition.

Of course, there is no such thing as a racing certainty, and those who count their chickens before the result is in the frame will be tempting fate. The name of the winning owner has not been written on the 2010 cheque as yet, nor has the name of the 2011 winner, an unknown two-year-old presently roaming in a paddock at Summerhill, perhaps elsewhere.

Next year’s sweepstake will be R2 million, quadruple the inaugural stake within five years for an event committed to serving the tradition of noble horseracing, racehorse ownership and returns for investors.

There are two ways to prepare yourself for a much better than average chance of sharing glamour, joy and cool cash in 2011. Be at this year’s race on 6 November. Be at the sale on 7 November!
