Capetown Noir booked his ticket for the J&B Met on February 1 with a cool, clinically executed display at Kenilworth Saturday giving trainer Dean Kannemeyer his third L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate victory.

Jockey Karl Neisius had Capetown Noir placed handily throughout and sent the 5-1 chance clear over a furlong from home to beat the strong-finishing favourite Jackson by a length and a quarter. Jet Explorer followed in thrid with the front-running No Worries fighting on gamely for fourth under jockey Piere Strydom.

Neisius said: “I was always confident, I got exactly where I wanted to be and in the straight I kept my eye on Jackson. I quickened past him and everything worked out perfectly.”

Kannemeyer added: “Capetown Noir quickened up exceptionally well and he is a brilliant miler but we’ve now got to have a crack at the Met. He won last season’s Cape Derby over the same ten furlongs so I must give it a go.”

Jackson quickened up in the final furlong but he never really looked like overhauling the winner and jockey Glen Hatt reported: “He hit a bit of a flat spot.” But trainer Brett Crawford was more than satisfied, saying: “A mile is not his game. He’s a ten furlong horse and it was a great prep for the Met.”
