The Gavin van Zyl yard celebrated their second Grade 1 win of the season on Saturday, this time with The Apache, who conquered in an exciting finish to the Grade 1 Daily News 2000.

The Apache won the Grade 2 Dingaans at Turffontein in November and was then sent to the Kenilworth Quarantine station ready to be shipped to owner Winston Chow’s home country of Hong Kong. However, an outbreak of African Horse Sickness meant all exports were cancelled and he returned to the van Zyl yard, running his first race for six months in last months KRA Guineas. He over raced in that race and was too handy, so the van Zyl yard were confident he would do better this time.

The Mogok three-year-old colt is not quite as strapping a type as his paternal Grade 1 winning half-brother, Orbison, but he’s very well balanced. He duly delivered under another fine big race ride from jockey Raymond Danielson. Danielson knows this horse very well and would have been confident when he settled well this time even if he was right at the back of the field as he has both a fine turn of foot and is able to maintain a sustained finish. He duly made up the ground rapidly and by the line was flying together with the favourite Run For It, who also came from well back. English Garden had just bettered the eventual fourth-placed Black Wing when The Apache and Run For It snared him on the line.

The photo-finish confirmed that The Apache had held on by a short-head from Run For It and less than a length separated the first four, with Gold Onyx just 0,5 lengths further back in fifth. The Apache was bred by Scott Brothers and now has the Vodacom Durban July in his sights.
