South Africa’s River Jetez claimed a decisive Dubai victory this evening in the Group 2 Balanchine at Meydan for legendary trainer Mike de Kock.
Jockey Kevin Shea struck for home on stablemate Reem at the top of the straight and briefly looked to have stolen a crucial advantage but River Jetez, winner of the 2010 edition of South Africa’s J&B Met (Grade 1) when in the care of Mike Bass, delivered a withering run down the outside to hunt down Reem with a furlong to run, with jockey Christophe Soumillon easing her up near the line for a two-and-half-length victory.
Mike de Kock told the Racing Post, “River Jetez is a very good mare who we think is a World Cup night contender. She stays well and the Sheema Classic would be the most likely option, though we have other options as the Duty Free trip would be fine. We may come back on Super Thursday but will decide later. She was very unlucky last time but Christophe has timed this perfectly. Kevin has also given Reem a great ride and it is a big result for the yard.”
