SA CLASSIC (Grade 1)
(2nd Leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown)
Pierre Jourdan took victory in today’s Grade 1 R2 million SA Classic at Turffontein in thrilling style and is now bang on target for next month’s SA Derby, a race which could secure the SASCOC Triple Crown and a R2 million bonus for his owners Emilio Baisero and Gary Alexander.
Nicci Garner reports that not since the legendary Horse Chestnut in 1999 has any individual thoroughbred looked like Triple Crown material, but Pierre Jourdan has it all - pace, talent and a great turn of foot. He’s a crowd puller too, and Turffontein’s parking lots were packed as racing fans came to see South Africa’s new equine hero.
With a draw 14 of 16 runners, Pierre Jourdan was expected to drop out and make his run from the back, but he surprised all when rushed along to settle second behind easy galloping Havasha, who went out to set the pace under Piere Strydom.
They were followed by Captive Wind, Irish Flame and Iwannadance, with Bulsara and Flying Tristram furher back.
Havasha ran strongly and had a good lead turning into the straight, but coming into the last 400m he was quickly swallowed by Pierre Jourdan, who showed his by now familiar acceleration and sped clear in a matter of strides under pilot Derreck David.
Pierre Jourdan kept going strongly and was never in danger of being caught, despite late efforts from Bulsara, who ran on for second, and Irish Flame. He won by 1.75 lengths.
Trainer Gary Alexander commented: “Pierre Jourdan really impressed me today. We aimed him at this race and he did it easier than we thought he would. He’s amazing and today is my wife’s birthday, so this is extra special.”
Jockey Derreck David said: “He pulled me through at the 400m mark and I only asked him for a bit more after that. He won really well today!” Pierre Jourdan, a Summerhill graduate of the 2008 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale is by Parade Leader and has won 6 of 7 starts and R2,85 million in stakes.
