CAPE FILLIES GUINEAS (GR1) 2010

The R750,000 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas (Grade 1) at Kenelworth on Saturday was billed as a two-horse race and so it proved to be, with Cape star Ebony Flyer extending her unbeaten record to four from four when claiming victory from top-class Highveld raider, 2009 Emperors Palace Ready To Run graduate, Igugu.

Nicci Garner reports that the Justin Snaith-trained Ebony Flyer, a dual feature race winner heading into her toughest test to date, was red-hot favourite at 9-20 with Mike de Kock’s star filly Igugu on offer at 17-10 and the rest any price.

Flaming Alice (66-1) went out to set a steady pace with Pisces Star and Emerald Cove disputing second place ahead of Cash Register on the rail and Ebony Flyer, who was being tracked by Igugu. School Captain and Stimela were next, ahead of Dancing Royale and Six Blue Notes with In Like Flynn at the rear of the field.

The picture changed suddenly at the 400m mark as Bernard Fayd’Herbe let Ebony Flyer have her head and the Jet Master filly charged through to lead, catching Igugu a little flat-footed.

Although Mike de Kock’s Galileo filly chased hard under Anthony Delpech and was closing at the finish, Ebony Flyer had stolen a march and won by 1.25 lengths in a time of 100.21, just over 4 seconds outside the course record.
