There’s a legend in the horseracing business in America called the “Horse Whisperer”. Monty Roberts’ fame has travelled so far, it’s been immortalised in a film by the same name, starring Robert Redford.

The only reason they haven’t been able to make a movie on the life and times of Andrew Fortune, is simply that no-one could take his part. There’s an old saying “they broke the mould when they made him”, but we wonder if there ever was such a mould. Andrew is many things, some of them unprintable, some of them enigmatic. But if there’s one thing he surely is, he’s a helluva jockey, and a “once-off”. Born to ride horses in the most unlikely place on the planet (the Cape Flats), racing was lucky to have found Andrew Fortune, or perhaps, it was the other way around. Truth is, there are few men alive with the empathy, the understanding and the ability to coax the last ounce from a racehorse, than Andrew Fortune.

A week ago, we reported on his visit to Summerhill, where his mission was to “sit” on a few of the candidates for the Emperors Place Ready To Run Sale. Part of his secret is to impart no secrets, but Andrew wears his heart on his sleeve, and his joy at finding a horse he likes, is palpable.

We’re not sure he’d approve of our disclosure, and we don’t know whether we’re completely accurate in our assessment, but these are the ones that had him doing the “flying” dismount :
