Phunyuka pulled off an impressive victory on Saturday at the Vaal in the August Stakes (Listed) over 1200m.
Tab Online reports that Galahad broke well but it was Piere Strydom on Renegade who went to the front with Galahad in close pursuit. When Galahad took over with 300m to run it looked all but over. Jockey “Willie” Figueroa presented Phunyuka on the inside and in the final 50m, the 7.5kg difference at the weights told. The graduate of the Emperors Palace Ready To Run went on to win by 1.25 lengths with Renegade keeping on for third and Belorus claiming fourth.
With this victory, Phunyuka is now guaranteed a run in next month’s Emerald Cup where Roy Magner and Wally Brits must surely feel they have a fighting chance at snatching a slice of the R600,000 stakes.
