PRIX DE L’ARC DE TRIOMPHE

Attended by British ambassador the Count of Derby, a committee made up of French Racing authorities met on January 24, 1920 and decided to create a highly prestigious international race, complementary to the Grand Prix de Paris.

In search of a title to pay tribute to the French soldiers that served in the first World War, the committee came down to two possible contenders, the ‘Prix de la Victoire’ and the eventual choice, the ‘Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.’

Inaugurated at Longchamp racecourse, the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was first contested on Sunday, October 3, 1920.

The winner of the inaugural edition, Comrade, collected FF150,000 for the win.

The Arc is traditionally run on the first Sunday in October, with the exception of 1939 and 1940.
