The Taxman doesn't always have to be beaten.

moneyAgain, when the government withdrew the generous tax concessions available to non-farming investors in racing and breeding in 1998, we realized we could either sit back and preside over decline for the next 10 years, or do something about it. And so it was at Summerhill that the new proposal for the taxation of the racing and breeding industries was drawn, and together with our old friend, Professor Kevin Mitchell, we approached the Commissioner of Inland Revenue in attempt to persuade Government to consider it. Happily, the proposal was accepted almost as it stood, and South Africans were able to continue to enjoy the benefits of the most benevolent tax dispensation for our industry anywhere in the world. That dispensation had a lifespan of 16 years, and was a substantial contributor to the sustenance of the game, injecting new vigour into the veins of owners and would-be breeders.
