The trip to Jo'burg : A whole lot more than just the awards

Quite apart from the farm’s annual brochure launch, and the Equus National Racing Awards, the Summerhill team’s journey to “Jozie” was rewarding for a totally different reason.

Bob YearhamBob Yearham-Left (CitiGaming)We went there to secure one of racing’s biggest prizes: the support of Phumelela, Bloodstock SA and the sponsor’s for the creation of the R1 million Emperor’s Palace Sweepstakes for graduates of this year’s Ready to Run and we came away with a resounding “yes”.

Graeme HawkinsGraeme Hawkins Which means that the 2008 renewal of what this year will be a R500 000 event, will now amount to the richest Ready to Run Sales race in the world, bar none.

Not bad for a Zulu farm situated 10 kms outside the dustiest little “dorp” in the Midlands, at the southernmost tip of the World’s supposedly darkest continent. And there’ll be weekly updates in publications such as the Sporting Post, the Racegoer & Racing Express leading in to the sale as well as this year’s race, besides the daily inserts on our blog.
