While we’ll be bringing you more news on the race in the course of the week, including our trainers and jockey’s views for what it’s worth, the Sunday Tribune penned the following pictures of our three runners (which make up 16% of the field) for the Vodacom Durban July.

Pick SixPick Six: The form of his Gomma Gomma win has come under question and as that was his season’s target, trainer Charles Laird has faced a tough task getting him spot on for this race. He is quite widely drawn too. However, he has an outstanding replacement jockey in Glyn Schofield and, at best, can go close with his ability to quicken from a handy position.

Dynamite MikeDynamite Mike: He is a Greyville type with the ability to quicken very well from off the pace. He won the KZN Guineas being ridden hands and heels and ran on well in the Gold Challenge despite having been off work for a few days. His trainer Mike Azzie said he was not ready when running in the SA Classic over 1 800m,and some stamina influences in the dam line could give him a chance to stay. His good draw should see him well positioned and he could be the dark horse.

Veiled EssenceVeiled Essence: Has had a good preparation and has a strong finish but faces her strongest opposition to date from a shocking draw.

We might take issue with a few of their sentiments, but will reserve our comments for later in the week. The great thing about the game is it attracts so many views, and it’s a chance to create new history, every day.
