School is out!

Morning prayerMorning prayerIt’s summer holiday time in South Africa and schools all over the country are breaking up. Summerhill is no exception - it has its own small pre-primary school, which caters for children from the age of twelve months upwards and when the children leave the Mirza Al Sayegh Pre-primary they go to “big” school, just down the road from the farm. This year, out of the forty five children attending “big” school (Mpofanyana Primary), all but four of them were children of Summerhill employees.

Nonhlanhla Shange, headmistress of Mpofanyana Primary School, is assisted by three full-time teachers. This school caters for children between the ages of four and twelve years, and from there they go on to high school in either Mooi River or one of the surrounding areas. Mpofanyana recently introduced a Grade “R” class, which means that younger children will now be properly equipped for their first school experience.
