Saturday’s L’Ormarins Queens Plate brought a new meaning to the words “Cape Style”, and reportedly the “beautiful” people of the Mother City, made it the second biggest meeting of the Western Cape year. Pocket Power doubled up on last year’s victory with an exhibition which endorsed his position as the highest ranked racehorse in South Africa. He’ll go into next month’s J&B Met as one of it’s hottest fancies in decades, especially under the new conditions of the race.

Gaynor RupertGaynor Rupert, who has embraced the art of breeding at her L’Ormarins Stud in a fashion unprecedented in South African history, understands the meaning of “sponsorship”, coming as she does from a background of association with some of the world’s greatest brands, Cartier, Dunhill, Mont Blanc, Rembrandt, Rothmans etc.

And now we have L’Ormarins, the stud, as opposed to the winery. It won’t be long and Gaynor’s love of the game will be manifested with headlines heralding the arrival of big race winners from what is arguably the most dramatically set stud farm in the world. You have to see it to believe it.
