World's Largest Sale off the mark

A reminder that the 62nd annual September Yearling Sale begins today at Keeneland. Media report that buyers from around the world have converged on the sales grounds. A record 5,161 horses have been catalogued for the sale which runs September 11 - 25. No sale is conducted Friday, September 15. Sessions begin at 10:00 am daily.

“The world comes to Central Kentucky for Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale,” said Geoffrey Russell, Keeneland’s director of sales. “The September Sale offers a quantity of quality - strength at every level of the market. So no matter what price range a buyer wants to play in, he will be satisfied. It is one stop shopping.”

Yearlings by 300 different stallions have been cataloged, including such sires as A.P. Indy, Danzig, Deputy Minister, Distorted Humor, Dynaformer, Elusive Quality, El Prado (Ire), Forestry, Fusaichi Pegasus, Giant’s Causeway, Gone West, Kingmambo, Machiavellian, Maria’s Mon, Pulpit, Sadler’s Wells, Seeking the Gold, Storm Cat, and Unbridled’s Song, among others.

Coverage of the first two days of Keeneland’s September Yearling Sale, September 11 - 12, will be broadcast live in the United States by HorseRacing TV (HRTV) and on a tape-delayed basis by TVG. Exclusive coverage in the United Kingdom and Ireland will be broadcast live on Racing World.

Keeneland also will provide live coverage of the entire sale on its website at www.keeneland.com, courtesy of Post Time Technologies.

Speaking of Keeneland, the Keeneland Association and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Breeding & Racing Seminar in association with the KZN and Western Cape Breeders, Phumelela Gaming and Leisure, and Racing South Africa will be held on 29 September at Turffontein Racecourse, Johannesburg. The day-long seminar will cover the following subjects:

  • Equine internship opportunities
  • Commercial breeding in Kentucky
  • Consignment preparation, X-rays and corrective surgery - the Keeneland experience of serving the buyer ar public auction
  • Simulcasting contracts, promulgation and defence of equine medication rules, tax issues, general lobbying and representation for woners
  • History of Keeneland sales

Summerhill’s Broodmare Manager Annet Becker (who has recently been recruited from Juddmonte Farms in the USA) will be one of the guest speakers.
