Death of Labeeb

The late Sheikh Maktoum’s outstanding racehorse and promising international sire Labeeb, passed away at Summerhill Stud this week. The cause of death was an aneurism (broken blood vessel), leading to severe internal hemorrhaging.

Labeeb was one of the most versatile racehorses of his era. The dual Grade One winner defeated some of America’s most talented sprinters, and stretched his sprinting talent to include victories at a mile and nine furlongs in the Woodbine Mile and the Hollywood Derby respectively.

A representative of the much sort-after Roberto bloodline, Labeeb initially stood at Sheikh Maktoum’s Gainsborough Stud in the United States.  In his first crop of only 31 foals he produced 12.5% stakes winners to runners including four stakes winners, and seven Black-type performers.

Labeeb covered two books of mares at Summerhill, and his first yearlings will be presented for sale at next year’s National Sales.

Everyone at Summerhill is devastated by Labeeb’s passing. We are currently contacting all our clients with mares booked to Labeeb for the forthcoming season to ensure suitable alternative arrangements are made for you and your mare.
